The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 566: NO.
Chapter 566: NO.
Iris could see why the little girl refused to go before they saved her older brother, who was buried under the wreckage of a house. No one noticed this and the fact the spirit of her older brother was not among those people, who had died, indicated that he was still alive.
’My brother...’ the spirit of the little girl kept pointing at a ruined house. She sat on Iris’ lap with a sad face. ’My brother...’
"Is there something wrong, Luna?" Eron asked, he was worried to see Iris’ expression looking so troubled. He tried to glance inside the carriage, but he couldn’t find anything that could possibly make her upset.
"Can you call a few warriors?" Iris asked, she turned her head to Eron. "There is a little boy buried under those ruins. I think he is still alive."
Eron blinked his eyes in confusion. She had been sitting there and the Alpha didn’t even allow her to step outside, but how could she know about it?
"How do you know about that?" Eron couldn’t help, but ask.
However, Iris was not in the right headspace to explain this thing to him, more so, she was afraid if they were tardy any longer, they might not be able to save the young boy anymore.
"Can you just do it, please? I am afraid the little boy is injured badly."
"Oh, okay! Right away, Luna!" Eron immediately rushed to find three warriors to help him to dig the ruins.
Zephyr, Kian, Asher and Eron tried to find the little boy, but they couldn’t. This house was in a very poor condition and if they were going to dig all the debris, it would take them a whole day.
"Are you sure? How did she know about it?" Asher asked in frustration. They had been digging for more than an hour at this point, but there were still more spots to cover and it would be a pain in the ass to do this job with only the four of them. "I don’t understand why we are doing this when there are a lot more important things to do now," Asher couldn’t stop complaining.
"Maybe she saw the little boy during the fight when the house collapsed," Kian tried to guess.
"Yeah, but it doesn’t explain how she knew the boy is still alive," Asher grumbled.
They were thinking out loud because they stood out of Iris’ earshot, thinking she couldn’t hear their conversation, but unfortunately, they forgot their luna was excellent at reading lips and they were facing her right now.
"Show me where your brother is, okay?" Iris spoke to the little girl’s spirit, who looked conflicted. She did not seem too sure where exactly her brother’s body was. She only remembered the house had collapsed and her older brother tried to protect her, by shielding her with his own body, which was proven not to work at all. "Come here."
Iris beckoned the spirit to come with her, while she went out of the carriage. She couldn’t really touch the spirit, but they felt like a gush of cold wind.
At the same time, Cane watched darkly when one of his warriors breathed his last. The warrior was injured so badly, neither his healing ability nor Grace’s healing power could help him. Cane held the warrior’s hand, while he kept talking about going home to his family.
Once again, Cane was hit with this feeling. He was responsible for the deaths of his pack members, these warriors, who followed him blindly. Their blood was on his hands, because he was not capable of giving the right order and reading the situation better.
They should have left this pack when they were attacked the first time and realized there was nothing this pack could offer, but he stayed, he prolonged his time here because he was still trying to figure out how to help these people, but in the end, the cost of it was too great.
The number of the fallen warriors in this attack was not as great when their pack was attacked, but still, facing loss after loss could put you in a dark headspace. This was not a feeling that Cane was fond of.
"He will be the thirteenth," Grace said, as she closed the warrior’s eyes, while the Alpha still held his hand. Their final count was thirteen.
Thirteen warriors died during this attack.
Another thirteen lives were taken because of Cane’s incapability to lead his people. It struck him hard.
"Hm." Cane didn’t say anything anymore and none of them was daring enough to break the silence. He was still in the same position, holding the warrior’s hand, until he saw his mate come out of the carriage and his eyes became a little bit darker when he stood up and approached her.
The carriage was protected by Haco’s magic, which made it the safest place for Iris to stay, just in case there was another ambush again when they were still in this dire situation.
Cane had ordered Ethan to send a message to the Bloody Wolf pack that they needed more people and also commanded them to make a perimeter around this area, while they checked on the injured warriors and the Silver River pack members.
"What are you doing? I told you to stay inside," Cane said in a dark voice. He used to talk so gently with Iris, thus when he used this tone, it made her flinch. It reminded her of the side of Cane that she didn’t want to see. "Go back inside, Iris and stay there."
"Cane, we need to check on that collapsed building because there is a young boy there, he is still alive, we need to move quickly." Iris pointed at the ruins that the spirit little girl showed to her. "We need to go there."
"Let someone else check on that, go back to the carriage." Cane heightened his senses, trying to find any danger around them, because he couldn’t even believe his own judgment right now. "Iris. Go back to the carriage. Right now."
The atmosphere became so tense and everyone had their eyes on Iris and Cane, as the two of them stood five steps apart, but it seemed, they were so far away from each other.
"Cane, you are not listening. The spirit of that young boy’s sister is with me now. She died when her brother wanted to protect her when the building collapsed."
"Ask that spirit to show the exact spot of her brother and you can go back to the carriage," Cane said sternly. The longer Iris stood outside of the carriage, the angrier he became. He didn’t know why he felt this rush of negative feelings, it was so nerve wrecking. "Go back."
Everyone stopped whatever they were doing and watched on as the scene between their alpha and luna unfolded. This must be the first time for the Alpha to speak so sternly to her ever since they returned from the capital city.
And the fact that the Luna didn’t immediately oblige to the order stunned them as well, especially followed by the curt answer she gave the Alpha.
"No," Iris said firmly. She looked Cane in the eyes and was able to see the surprise in those dark eyes.
