The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 529: DIFFICULT MORNING
Chapter 529: DIFFICULT MORNING
"Why are you running away?" Aliana panted heavily, once they were out of the tavern.
"You are the one who started running first," Ethan retorted.
It was not clear who had suggested running away first the moment they saw their enraged Alpha. They were mortified to see the killing intent in Cane’s eyes, knowing they were at fault for taking Iris to the tavern.
"Do you think Cane will kill us?" Ethan grimaced. He really didn’t want to deal with Cane right now.
"There is a high possibility he will do that."
"You sound so optimistic with your answer..."
It was already late at night, but this area had never been quiet, since all the warriors used to wind up here after their shifts were over.
"What are our chances?" Ethan contemplated. They couldn’t avoid their alpha forever.
"We need to get to the Luna first and let her talk with the Alpha. If everything that you said is true, the Alpha will listen to her, right."
"Ah! Great idea!" Ethan agreed immediately. Their best chance to survive was to get the Luna on their side.
"What great idea?"
Ethan and Aliana screeched when they heard this voice from behind them. They were deep in their thoughts so they didn’t realize Jace was there. Not only Jace, but Lou was also with him.
"Jace! You startled me!" Aliana complained, she clutched her chest, as her heart started beating wildly. "What are you doing here?"
"I am looking for you, people say you are here with the Luna and the others." Jace glared at Ethan who immediately stood behind Aliana. The Beta was still angry with him because he took his sister out to fight and exposed her to danger when the attack happened.
"Which tavern Iris is in right now?"
Aliana tilted her head and the corners of her lips twitched to see how eager this merchant was to court her luna openly. "You are too late, the Alpha must have taken her back to the pack house already."
Lou said something in Andel language, though they didn’t know what it meant, they were sure it was a curse or bad word.
"Aliana, we need to talk," Jace said sternly, disregarding her conversation with the merchant.
This time, Aliana shifted her attention to her brother and sighed. She could avoid the Alpha, but it seemed, she couldn’t run away from her brother.
"Okay." Aliana nodded. After all, they would have this conversation sooner than later, it would be good to get done with it as soon as possible, so Jace would stop worrying about her. "Let’s talk."
============================
"We were young and the only thing we listened to was the sound of our hearts racing!"*
Iris quoted a poem that she read not so long ago, as she watched Cane attentively change her dress because she was too stubborn about not getting changed.
She wanted to sleep in a beautiful dress, so her dreams would be beautiful too, at least, that was what she said.
Currently, they were inside their bedroom and it took quite an effort for Cane to drag Iris back to the pack house, as she didn’t want to get into the carriage and wanted Cane to carry her on his back.
Therefore, on their way back to the pack house, countless jaws dropped to see the Alpha giving the Luna a piggyback ride, while she confessed her love for him. She became so blunt and bold when she was drunk and Cane knew that.
Fortunately, Iris simply whispered to him and did not make the confession for public consumption.
"Can you feel how my heart is racing?" Iris took Cane’s hand and put it over her chest, while she was half naked before him. "Can you feel that? My heart is beating so fast whenever you are near me. Do you feel the same?"
Cane sighed, he wanted to stay angry with her for being so reckless, but then seeing her so free and how she tried to bond with the other warriors left Cane with a mixture of emotions.
"I do, Iris. I do. But, I am so upset with you right now." Cane pulled his hand away and helped her to get into her night dress.
"Why?" Iris frowned. She pushed Cane to the bed and straddled him, as her face was so close to his. "Why?" She leaned over even more and bit his shoulder.
Cane noticed that his mate loved to bite whenever she got drunk. Easily, he flipped her body and now he was hovering above her, holding down both of her arms beside her body, yet Iris started to grind herself against him, which made Cane growl dangerously.
At this point, Cane was speechless. "Tomorrow, you better remember what you are doing now, Iris."
Hearing that, Iris chuckled and kept doing it...
On the other hand, the seven warriors were waiting outside the door, their expressions so gloomy, as they waited for their final verdict.
"What do you think they are doing inside?" Otis asked no one in particular. "What do you think the punishment from the Alpha will be?"
"I don’t know. If we can keep our heads intact to see the sun tomorrow, I think it’s already great enough," Asher replied dramatically.
"I told you it is not a great idea to make the Luna come with us to drink," Zephyr said in a grim tone.
"I didn’t say anything!" Eron and Dyne raised both of their hands.
"It’s Aliana and Ethan, who asked her to join us," Kian reminded them.
"Where are they now?" Reed asked. "It should be the two of them who got scolded by the Alpha, not us."
They agreed with what Reed said, but because the culprits were not there, there was not much they could do.
"I really want to smack the two of them for putting us in this situation," Otis grumbled.
"You can’t smack a woman, more so, Beta Jace will skin you alive, if you hurt his little sister," Eron reminded him.
"You can’t hit Ethan, either. No matter what, he is still the Gamma. He holds a higher rank than you," Dyne chimed in.
In the end, they could only keep their grievances to themselves, while waiting for the punishment.
===========================
Early in the morning, Iris woke up with a headache, she felt like her head was going to split into two and she whimpered softly against her pillow when the bright sunlight hurt her eyes.
"Awake?"
Iris heard the shuffle and felt the weight on the bed shift close to her. Cane was sitting on the edge of the bed with a glass of water. He helped her to sit down.
Iris was so grateful when the cold liquid graced her dry throat and she felt a little bit better because Cane’s body blocked the sunlight.
"How was last night? Did you enjoy it?" Cane asked calmly. There was no trace of hostility in his words, but Iris knew him better now to tell the question was not as innocent as it sounded.
Iris choked when she tried to gulp down the water, as she remembered what happened last night.
"Be careful," Cane said gently, while patting her shoulder, but this only made Iris feel even worse. She felt more uneasy with this calm Cane.
"I..." Iris tried to speak.
"Don’t remember?" Cane finished the line for her.
"I am sorry," Iris said in a small voice. Her voice was filled with regret.
However, Cane shook his head. He didn’t want to hear an apology, he wanted her to understand the situation better.
"I don’t want you to be sorry because you were having a fun time with the other people and tried to bond with them." That was right. Iris wanted to bond with them, though she said to herself that she wanted to give up after the members of the Howling Wolf pack still couldn’t accept her, as it turned out, deep down, she was still trying. "I don’t mind that at all. You are safe with them. At the very least, I chose them to be your personal warriors for a reason."
They might be resentful toward Iris at the beginning, but Cane knew them better that they wouldn’t neglect his direct order because of that. More so, he wanted them to know more about her to change their point of views.
"But?" Iris asked carefully. If he didn’t mind it at all there must be a greater problem there, which she didn’t see and she was right... she failed to realize it.
Cane looked like he was having a hard time talking about this, as he was not usually like this.
"The alcohol will ruin any potential success of the concoction that Grace gave to us." Cane took both of Iris’ hands and looked at Iris deeply. "We are trying, aren’t we?"
Cane’s words hit Iris so hard, as the realization finally dawned on her.
They were trying, Iris knew they were trying for a baby and it was stupid of her to even try the alcohol in the first place, let alone to let herself loose and get so drunk.
"I am so sorry... I’m really sorry... I didn’t think about that..." Iris felt so horrible, as tears started to roll down her cheeks. "I really didn’t mean it that way... I only..."
"Ssh..." Cane pecked her lips to stop her from rambling and stared into her eyes deeply, as he wiped her tears. "I don’t want to make you feel bad. I only want to know if we are on the same page regarding this matter."
