Iris’ mind was plagued with the thoughts of the possibility of Cane dying once the lycan left him. It scared her so much more than anything and she was unable to think clearly.

’Do you think I will stand a chance in a direct battle with a dark sorcerer without the lycan’s power like what happened in the mountains?’

The answer was an immediate no. It was proven that Zeke and Cyan were Decratic’s worshippers and both of them were mind controllers. How was one supposed to fight someone who could mess up their mind?

If Iris calmed down enough to think about the matter thoroughly, she would have realized what Cane said was true. The best chance they had to fight them was by using the lycan’s power and exploring more of what this cursed creature could do.

But then, this decision was a double edged sword, since the world was not such a welcoming place for a cursed creature like Lu.

Once people knew about it, all hell would break loose. It was still a wonder why Cyan didn’t start spreading any rumors about the relation between Cane and the lycan. Their best guess was that she didn’t want to expose herself even more as the dark witch, especially with the entourage of the Holy Kingdom on their way here.

Adding that to the untimely death of the King during the onslaught, they didn’t have enough power to back them up, along with the shift of power started in the capital city with Koda demanding the throne for his great grandson.

The rumors about Lady Cyan had started to spread, Cane helped as well with this, but with the fierce war that was happening, the impact was not as dramatic as he wanted it to be, as the public attention was divided.

After all, it was just a rumor...

"What if..." Iris trembled with the thought that Cane was so close to death when Zeke tried to get the lycan out of him. If he succeeded then...

"Iris." Cane had to shake her body to stop her from sliding deep into those horrendous thoughts, which could scare herself even more. "It’s not that easy to extract the lycan from me, Iris. Zeke can do it, but it doesn’t mean he has the power to go through with it, as long as the lycan is not willing. I swear to you, the lycan will not leave me, even if I want to get rid of it."

If that was an easy task, Zeke would have managed to accomplish it when they were in the mountains.

Cane explained that patiently, something that Iris should have known. But her mind was in shambles as the information that Haco revealed to them left her utterly shaken.

"As much as I hate it, it will be better if the lycan stays within me rather than letting our enemy have it." At this point, Cane had to make peace with the thought that the lycan would always be a part of him and the thought of getting rid of the lycan was not an option anymore.

Iris bit her lip, she tried to reign in her emotions, as she lowered her head and pulled at her hair anxiously, while Cane wiped her tears from her cheeks.

"You don’t need to worry, this is the least you should be worried about."

"I don’t want you to be harmed." Iris mumbled, she kept staring at her curls, while anxiously pulling at her hair.

"That will never happen."

But, one couldn’t predict the future, just like how Cane couldn’t make all of his schemes work, because there were so many unpredictable variables that could change the outcome of a plan.

"Excuse me for ruining this moment for both of you," Haco said, he had this deep concerned look on his face. "But, why do I feel like you can hear, Iris? You didn’t even raise your head and read his lips when you talked to him just now."

Haco didn’t notice this before, because of how well Iris read someone’s lips, they didn’t pay close attention to it.

"I can hear now," Iris said sullenly, she didn’t want to talk about it. It was not that she wanted to keep it a secret, she simply didn’t want to announce it.

Until now, only a handful of people knew she could hear and Hanna was one of them.

"Why have you never told me when we spent time together everyday?" Haco was dumbstruck, but Iris was not in the mood to talk about it, as she snuggled against Cane’s chest and he hugged her closely. She hid her face, feeling so upset.

Meanwhile, Haco watched everything unfold before his eyes and fell deep in thought.

"You two look more and more like mates nowadays." He knew the story of how Cane marked Iris, but right now, the sorcerer could bet the feelings were genuine between the two of them.

Hell, the Alpha was even scarier nowadays with the appearance of Rei. He looked like he was going to tie Iris to him at the hip.

If Iris was not with him, she would have a bunch of warriors following her around.

"Ethan!" Aliana looked for the warrior the moment she entered the pack house. She had been away, taking care of the orphanage during this time, as they were pretty busy after the attack.

Ethan perked up at the sound of Aliana’s voice, he gave her his best smile, which made her frown, because she felt it was eerie.

"Stop smiling like a fool!" Aliana immediately approached the Gamma, but even receiving that harsh scolding, he still kept smiling.

"Did you miss me? You look so happy to see me," Ethan teased her, because of how eager she looked.

"Really? I don’t think this is my happy face," Aliana grumbled and then slung her arm around his shoulders casually. "Now, we have time, tell me everything."

Ethan frowned, not understanding what she meant. "Tell you what?"

It was already night and Ethan was extremely exhausted after taking care of a lot of things. He was determined to fall on his bed and not move until the morning came, he didn’t even want to waste his time cleaning himself up.

Bed. Bed. Bed. Sleep. That was his sole goal at this moment, but somehow, he still found the energy to talk with Aliana.

"Tell me everything about our luna, how she is with the Alpha. Why does the Alpha look so different? Tell me everything that you know." Aliana still had her arm around his shoulder, she was only a little bit shorter than Ethan, which meant she was pretty tall even for a female shifter.

Ethan’s frown deepened, as he stared at Aliana. "Why do I feel like I have been in this situation before?" He was too tired to think what caused this familiar feeling, but he was pretty sure the same thing had happened in the past.

Aliana clicked her tongue impatiently. "Don’t make that lame excuse, tell me now. I will not let you go until you talk."

"Aliana, I don’t think I have the energy to talk. The food in the dining hall must have been long finished. I am so hungry I don’t have the strength to even lift my finger." Ethan suddenly sounded pitiful.

"You know that you are being overly dramatic?" The corners of Aliana’s lips twitched when she heard that. "You can still walk and just now you have that stupid grin on your face."

Ethan clutched his stomach, he shamelessly didn’t change his expression. "I don’t think my words will be coherent... unless you are going to make something for me to eat, so I will have a little bit of energy to talk, after all, this is a loooooooong story. Probably, we need to stay up all night for you to understand the change in the way our alpha treats his luna."

Aliana really wanted to shake Ethan’s body, so he would spill all the beans.

"But, if you don’t want to know all the important details, that is fine too, just know that you should treat the Luna respectfully, because the Alpha is so fond of her right now."

"Yes, but what is the cause of it? I can see that, that’s why I am asking you."

"This feels more like an interrogation rather than you asking me..." Ethan looked gloomy and Aliana couldn’t help but want to smack his head when she heard him grumbling like this.

"Fine. Let’s go to the kitchen, let’s see, probably there is something left there." Aliana sighed in defeat.

"Ah... I will feel so awful eating the leftovers, my stomach is a little bit troubled nowadays because I don’t eat regularly."

"Who are you trying to fool?" Aliana grumbled, they were shifters, more so, there was no way for someone like them, who had eaten the worst thing ever that one could only imagine, to suddenly get sick because they didn’t eat regularly.

However, Ethan didn’t budge. He clutched his head now. "I handle a lot of things..."

"Fine! Fine! What do you want to eat?!" Aliana lost her temper, she knew what he was going to say and how it would turn out.

"Meat, please!" Ethan said happily, his eyes lit up, as if there was a new life that was infused into his body and Aliana could only hold back her annoyance.

That night, Iris couldn’t sleep, she kept thrashing on the bed, her heart didn’t feel at ease after learning what Haco told them.

She felt bad because the old sorcerer didn’t have much time with them, which also added to her uneasiness.

"Sleep, Iris." Cane pulled her closer and kissed her nape. "You woke me up."

"Oh, I am sorry..."
