The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 451: THE DINNER
Chapter 451: THE DINNER
"I am so happy, Maria." Finally, Sofia felt a little bit better after Jemma’s death. She had been very depressed ever since she lost the only person who had been with her through everything.
While Sofia would play a nice and docile mistress when they were in the Moon Dew pack, it would be Jemma, who had done all the dirty work for her behind the scenes.
Being one of the mistresses of Alpha Gallot was brutally hectic, because the threat never came from the Alpha himself, but his other mistresses. Therefore, Sofia was not unfamiliar with her and Iris’ situation right now. She was used to living like that. Thankfully, Alpha Cane had no other mistresses.
"I can see it on your face," Maria replied, she looked ecstatic too. Though when Sofia wasn’t looking at her, she felt this doubt that started to creep in her heart about the whole thing regarding Sofia.
Now, without Kaz, who put Sofia on the high pedestal and tried to make her look like the most important woman in the pack, because she was having the Alpha’s first baby and with Iris acting aloof toward them and only interacting with a handful of people that were close to her, everyone was in a weird mood.
"Of course, you will be able to see it on my face. I must be blushing so much right now," Sofia giggled, as she let Maria scrub her skin. She wanted to look perfect tonight for Alpha Cane.
Even though she didn’t attend the dinner arranged for the King, she looked forward to what would happen after that.
Usually, by this hour every night, she would fall asleep, but she didn’t think she would even be able to sit still because of the excitement.
"Your father will see us, baby. I am sure, he will be elated to meet you for the first time," Sofia said softly, as she caressed the baby in her stomach, which moved a few times, as if it could feel her excitement too.
Catching this sight, Maria’s eyes softened.
It was a beautiful picture after all to see how a mother loved her child.
==============================
Despite the music and the entertainment, one could tell that the King was not happy with the party. This was not a party that was up to his standard at all, after all, without women and endless alcohol, how could one call this a party? This was only a normal dinner with boring music and wasted performances.
Sir Elijah sat with Leon Dmitri, while Alpha Dristan sat next to Alpha Cane. It was not clear when he found a woman to accompany him, but right now there was a young woman, who just arrived this morning and told them she was Alpha Dristan’s new mistress from the Riverside pack.
It seemed, aside from his job to help Lou build the magical devices in the Riverside pack, he had time to find a woman to keep the Alpha from feeling lonely.
The girl looked so young, probably around Iris’ age. She looked like she wanted to be anywhere, but here. The presence of so many sovereigns, such as the Alphas and the King, made her fidgety. After all, she didn’t have a good experience with people in power.
Meanwhile, Alpha Dristan kept touching her here and there. It was not something inappropriate, but enough to say, the girl was not comfortable with such affection.
Sitting next to the King, Lady Cyan looked so calm and harmless. The air around her was so serene, as if she was someone who couldn’t even hurt an ant.
The welcoming party for the King looked so lifeless.
Actually, there was nothing wrong with this, since Iris had planned it meticulously with so much scrumptious food and good music, it was just their expectations were something a little bit wilder than this.
Meanwhile, as the Alpha of the pack, Cane didn’t even seem to be interested in entertaining the King or making the situation less depressing, knowing how much his guests were bored out of their minds with this extravagant dinner that he called a welcoming party for the King.
Right now, the said alpha was way more interested in feeding his little luna, as he cut more and more meat for her. He pushed the alcohol out of her reach though, which made Iris give him a look. She tasted the wine before and she seemed to like it.
"I heard you have been giving away food to the commoners," King Aeon said. He wanted to call for Nala, but the girl had been very sick ever since they arrived. It seemed he overtired her along their boring journey to this Howling Wolf pack. "Are you trying to win people’s hearts so you can be the only alpha in the south?"
Probably, the boredom and the alcohol were not a good mix, now the King let loose his tongue, which made Lady Cyan glance at him.
"I gave away the food in your name, My King," Cane replied, finally stopping his attempts to feed Iris more, seeing she already pushed his hand away a few times. She was full. "Those people should be grateful for you."
It was true that Cane gave away the food in the name of the King, but even the stupidest person alive could tell how untrue that was. There was no way the King would be so generous when he kept the food for himself and the royal family during winter. What he did was no different from the other five alphas.
Knowing this, people were even more in favor of the Alpha from the Howling Wolf pack, because he didn’t take the credit for himself.
However, King Aeon was not a fool, so he could tell what Cane was up to. This alpha only became more and more cunning with his methods.
Scoffing, King Aeon glared at Cane, who looked as calm as ever. "Do you think you can make a fool out of me with that reason? Do you want to get people’s sympathy, so you can be the sole alpha in the south?"
Lady Cyan grabbed the King’s hand, as if it was her attempt to calm him down, but Cane saw it differently.
"My King, I heard the people from the Holy Kingdom will arrive within this month. The only thing in my mind is to picture how good of a king you are for the people, especially when dark magic is involved. We all know how sensitive this topic is for the people from the Holy Kingdom and I know how much you don’t want them to interfere with the problems in our continent." The answer came very naturally from Cane’s mouth, as if he was a devotee who would do anything for his king.
People who didn’t know him any better would think he had pledged his loyalty to the King, yet it was not the King who carried on with the conversation.
"The King is only worried that you have made a harsh decision by executing the five alphas recklessly. After all, five packs lost their alphas at the same time. You should have discussed it with the King first," Lady Cyan said, trying to smooth things out.
However, it was not Cane, who retorted to that, but Alpha Dristan. Like a loyal dog. He wanted to flaunt his so-called ’loyalty’ to the other alpha in the room. "My lady, you don’t know how dangerous dark magic is. If Alpha Cane hadn’t moved quickly, it would have been his life that was in danger."
This room filled with false loyalty and lies, thickened with schemes underneath their words.
Lady Cyan nodded considerately. "I see. I see." But then, she lifted her head to look at Cane directly. "But, I heard, before your journey to the capital city, you have executed your first mistress because she used dark magic, is that true?"
"Yes." Cane didn’t blink an eye when he answered that, while a few servants had this complicated look in their eyes when Aria became the topic of discussion.
"How could that happen?" Lady Cyan asked again. "If one of the members of your pack has the audacity to touch forbidden things, shouldn’t you investigate further? More so, I heard the lycan appeared for the first time around the time of her death."
There, Lady Cyan threw the idea in the air, telling them how it started with Aria, who used dark magic first. Before all the five alphas were discovered to use dark magic, it was Aria from the Howling Wolf pack, who was publicly executed for the same reason.
Lady Cyan was trying to imply the connection between Aria, dark magic, the lycan and the accused five alphas.
"A mistress must obey what her master said, no?" Lady Cyan drank her wine gracefully, while the King kept mum beside her. Compared to her, the Sovereign looked more like a backdrop.
Cane’s eyes darkened when he knew where this conversation would go, but he kept his front and drank his wine as well, looking unperturbed by what Lady Cyan tried to imply.
Meanwhile, the people around them could feel the tension in the air and Alpha Dristan looked a little bit less bored.
People were intrigued as to how Cane would answer that. Despite her polite choice of words, Alpha Dristan could see how this lady started to show her claws, while Cane didn’t seem to be bothered.
But, there was another person, who looked as unperturbed as the Alpha. Just like her mate, Iris didn’t seem to be concerned with what lady Cyan said.
