The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 390: WHO ARE YOU?
Chapter 390: WHO ARE YOU?
"I heard there will always be a welcoming party for every guest who came to the southern pack and the parties will be even more appealing than the ones the royal family held," Koda said, as they attended the dinner with Cane sitting at the head of this long table and his beta was by his side, while Alpha Dristan sat on his left. "I am looking forward to it."
"I thought you came here to demand justice for the unjust death of your grandson, not with a party in your mind." Cane sipped his drink, as he stared at the dark sky outside. It was less than four hours before midnight. "More so, it’s a little bit insensitive to hold a party at a time like this."
Cane just executed those five alphas less than a week ago and the famine was still lingering in the southern kingdom because of how those alphas amassed the food in their own storages.
Cane wouldn’t throw any party and probably would never do it in the future either. It was a change that he aimed for, falling back to the same practices didn’t align with his ideas.
On the other hand, Alpha Dristan could feel Cane was a little bit off tonight, as if a little nudge could set him off, thus he changed the topic tactfully, seeing how Koda was a little bit embarrassed with Cane’s reply.
"I need to thank you for delivering justice for the fourth prince," Alpha Dristan said. "You have done justice for our pack too by getting revenge on behalf of Prince Vemion by killing the five alphas, only I hoped I could have come faster, so Koda and I would be able to see life leave their bodies."
"I was dealing with black magic from the five alphas, I didn’t have time to think about your convenience to torture them when my own life was on the line. Black magic is unpredictable, I could have died if I didn’t act fast." Cane’s voice was filled with sarcasm and Alpha Dristan realized he had phrased his words wrongly. "And now you are complaining I didn’t give you the satisfaction of torturing them while I still had to deal with the King demanding an explanation about the death of the five alphas."
"My apologies to you, Alpha Cane, I didn’t mean it that way. Of course, we are very grateful for what you have done for my grandson. What Alpha Dristan meant is; we wish we could have come faster to help and assist you, since it is indeed very dangerous to deal with black magic," Koda chimed in, trying to redeem his earlier comment, he could feel Alpha Cane’s foul mood.
Alpha Dristan then added. "Don’t worry about the King, me and my pack will stand by you. You have my word."
Cane said nothing, but his gloomy expression didn’t change, which made the situation a little bit awkward.
On the other hand, Jace didn’t understand what Cane was trying to do. Was he just pretending to look upset or was he really mad? From what Jace saw right now was; Cane didn’t want to be in this room. Maybe because tonight was the new moon, so he was a little tense and worried?
"I hope I can rely on you in time of need," Cane replied shortly, as he sipped his drink again, glancing at the gloomy sky.
"Absolutely," Alpha Dristan assured him and Cane nodded politely.
However, Cane knew better than to rely on anyone.
"I heard you have done something remarkable feeding the poor in the five packs," Alpha Dristan said, trying to change the topic. "It was something an alpha had never done before."
"Maybe you can try it yourself. After all, we need those people to run the pack. They are more valuable when they are alive than dead."
Cane’s answer was very callous and unfeeling, which made Dristan and Koda’s opinion about him shift again.
They thought Cane was as kind and just as his father, as they still remembered how Alpha Josh treated his people along with his mate, Cane’s mother.
But, this cold and calculative reply from Cane made them second think their opinion about him. He was not like his father. Alpha Josh would never say something like that or view people like commodities.
"Yeah! I agree with you!" Alpha Dristan guffawed.
He was satisfied with the answer and glad Cane was nothing like his father, since it would only give him a headache to deal with a highly moraled person like Alpha Josh. He was too idealistic and this world didn’t work that way.
After entertaining Alpha Dristan and Koda with some light conversation, Cane excused himself with the reason he needed to check on his mate.
"There are a lot of women you can have, why would you want to look after someone who is constantly sick?" Alpha Dristan was a little bit drunk when he asked this question.
Cane stared at him for a while before he answered that. "Because she is mine. I take care of what is mine." Cane nodded politely at them. "My beta will accompany you."
And after saying that, he left without waiting for Alpha Dristan’s reply.
Jace grimaced, he had been waiting for a chance to corner Ethan and interrogate the shit out of the Gamma, but now he had to deal with this drunk alpha.
On the other hand, Cane went straight to his bedroom. This was a guest room, since he didn’t want to sleep in the Alpha’s room, the same room that had been used by Alpha Gill where he bedded countless women.
"Leave," Cane said, once he entered the room. "All of you," he added when Haco and Grace didn’t move.
Hanna, Grace and Haco immediately left, leaving Cane alone with the unconscious Iris.
The Alpha went to the bed and sat down on the edge of it, as he stared at Iris’ sleeping face. He extended his hand to touch her cheek.
"Who are you?" He asked softly.
