Chapter 293: HE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS UP TO
"My apologies, Alpha." Nala was so embarrassed after being called out, especially in front of Iris. "But, I need to relay the message from the King." Nala was still stubborn, she lifted her head to glance at Cane, yet still refused to acknowledge Iris.
And, it was actually Hanna, who got so mad upon witnessing the disrespectful attitude Nala showed to her missy. "Shouldn’t you kneel in front of the Alpha and Luna when you greet them? It is also disrespectful for you to block their way," Hanna chimed in from behind Iris.
Nala threw a dagger look at Hanna, but she immediately lowered her head again, because she could feel the Alpha staring at her. She didn’t want to be on his bad side. There was another important thing she needed to do and this task was very important.
"My apologies for my lack of respect, Alpha Cane..." Nala gritted her teeth, as she went down on her knees. "... Luna Iris."
However, when Nala was already kneeling in front of the two of them, Cane simply stepped aside and pulled Iris with him. "I will hear that after dinner."
And after saying that, Cane walked away, he didn’t even spare her a single glance. He was as cold as ever, it was very delusional of Nala to think she could get on Cane’s good side after blatantly ignoring his mate.
Seeing that, Hanna was elated. She was very happy for her missy, as the Alpha completely ignored this vicious woman. Her steps were so light when she followed the two of them, while Ethan snickered along with her.
On the other hand, Nala felt so humiliated by what had happened, her face turned so red and she grinded her teeth, trying to hold back her tears, as she stood up and watched Cane’s back.
What else should she do to get a little bit of attention from him? Why didn’t he look her way at all when all the men in the palace would never refuse her advances? They would worship her in the bed, even the King could barely keep his hands off her.
Meanwhile, Iris grinned when she saw the way Cane defended her. At this moment, she didn’t mind watching his cold side. He was so cunning to use his status on Nala, but his action was justified and somehow, Iris felt so warm in her heart because in a way, she felt what Cane had done was to defend her.
"Thank you," Iris said in a small voice and Cane put his finger under her chin to make her look at him.
"You need to learn how to put people in their places."
Iris was stunned because she didn’t expect Cane to say such a thing, but she nodded anyway. The Alpha wouldn’t always be with her, thus she needed to find a way to defend herself.
After all, she carried the title of the Luna of two packs and the way people perceived her was very important, as it would affect Cane as well.
Iris thought that was the reason why Cane told her that, but in his opinion, he simply didn’t like the way Nala treated Iris and she wouldn’t be the last person who would confront his mate and disrespect her, thus he wanted her to stand up for herself more.
This was the path she chose and it wouldn’t be an easy one, Cane had shown her and she knew the consequences that entailed when she decided to come here. It was a long battle and he wanted her to be ready for whatever would come their way.
Iris looked relaxed and felt a little bit excited after the ordeal with Nala, she glanced over her shoulder and saw how Nala walked so far behind them, as she threw her a hatred glare, but Iris walked closer to Cane in response, she literally glued herself to him, while the Alpha only glanced at her and let her do whatever. He knew what she was up to.
Yet, Iris’ petty mood turned into a dreadful one when she saw the person at the head of the long table in the dining room. It was Prince Kellan. Her whole body reacted, as she became so stiff, unconsciously, she grabbed Cane’s hand a little bit tighter.
Her reaction didn’t go unnoticed by Cane yet again.
Iris felt the whole room become so bleak, even the smile on the children’s faces looked so creepy in her eyes. Her stomach churned the more she walked closer to the Prince.
Meanwhile, Prince Kellan smiled warmly at Iris, he even invited them to sit next to him, instead of sitting at another table and Cane took her close to him, as he sat down next to the Prince, while Iris was beside him. She was fidgeting.
Hanna and Ethan went to another table across the room, as they talked with the other children and didn’t pay close attention to their alpha and luna.
Not long after that, Nala entered the room and she sat down on the other table too, but her eyes were fixed on Cane and Iris. A moment later, an old lady approached her and sat down next to her. They were having a conversation in low voices, so no one could hear what they were talking about.
"What do you think about the children in this orphanage?" Prince Kellan asked Iris, his voice was so warm and gentle, as if he was talking to a child, but Iris couldn’t hear that and she missed the question, until Cane squeezed her hand and let her know the Prince was talking to her.
"They are adorable," Iris replied. She was trying to smile, but she felt nauseated.
"It’s a relief that you find them adorable, because they can be little devils at times." Prince Kellan looked her in the eyes and this made her uncomfortable. "Children are so amazing, aren’t they? That’s why I like them."
Iris felt her heart thumping wildly in her chest. She didn’t like the Prince’s smile.
