The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 291: THE SIGHT OF HER
Chapter 291: THE SIGHT OF HER
"Alpha, come and help us calm the baby down!" Ethan said cheerfully once he noticed the Alpha was there. "We were walking past this room when we heard the baby crying, but no one was nearby."
Iris lifted her head and looked at Cane. She had been trying to make the baby stop crying, but she didn’t know how, since she hadn’t even held one before this. She saw Cane enter the room while his expression was as calm as ever, there was no trace of surprise, or anything that could tell her what he felt upon seeing her here.
"Do you think the Alpha can calm the baby down?" Hanna asked in a small voice doubtfully. A man usually was clueless about handling a little one, especially someone with high status like Cane. Those men usually didn’t even care about their own children. As long as they had an heir, they were set for life.
Therefore, someone like Prince Kellan, who was willing to take the pain and care for these children, was very exceptional.
However, Ethan just grinned at Hanna proudly, while his eyes lit up with mirth. "Watch and learn," he said smugly, as Cane walked closer to them.
"Give her to me," Cane said, as he held out his arms. At this point, the baby’s face had turned red.
Iris stared at Cane for a moment, before she spoke sheepishly. "I have tried to feed the baby." Iris handed the baby carefully to Cane, who held the little one comfortably, as if he had done this countless times.
The baby nestled in his arms, snuggled into him, though she was still crying, she toned down a little bit, feeling comfortable with the way Cane held and patted her back.
Cane glanced at the glass of milk in Iris’ hand and the wet cloth that she used to feed the baby with, then talked to Hanna. "Make a new one. Ask someone if you don’t know how."
The milk was already cold and they didn’t know how long the milk had been sitting there, so the taste probably had changed.
"Yes, Alpha," Hanna said immediately, but before she left, she dragged Ethan with her.
"What? I don’t know how to make a bottle of milk," Ethan protested, but Hanna glared at the Gamma, which made him flinch as he followed her sulkily, leaving the two of them alone.
The baby was still crying a little bit, making a fuss, as she sucked on her fingers, trying to put all of her small hand into her mouth, but Cane pulled it back.
The Alpha walked toward the basin and cleaned his hand, before he put his pinky finger into her mouth, so she could stop crying while they waited for Hanna to bring warm milk for her.
"How did you do that?" Iris asked, she was fascinated by how easy it was for Cane to handle the baby. How did he know what to do?
Yet, Cane said nothing, as he stared at the little one in his arms, the baby had brown eyes and black hair, as her chubby cheeks were rosy from her crying earlier, tears still streamed down her cheeks when she blinked.
"Have you handled a baby before?" Iris asked again, she was enchanted by the Alpha before her eyes. The man, who was also her mate. The sight was so beautiful. It was so rare to see a man with status holding a baby, as they usually didn’t know how, since it was not common for them.
Iris didn’t get the answer that she wanted from Cane, because he kept mum, but she would get it from Amee, who would tell her a warm story about how Cane prepared himself to be a father when Leane was pregnant with their first child.
Not long after that, Hanna returned with Ethan following behind her, it seemed, the maid had reprimanded the Gamma because he couldn’t read the room, as he looked so sullen.
Hanna handed a glass of warm milk and new, clean clothes to Cane and immediately dragged Ethan out of the room again, not heeding his protests.
"Do you want to try?" Cane suddenly asked. The sky had turned dark out there and the room was warm with the fire from the brazier and the light from the luminous pearls on the wall.
"Huh?" Iris didn’t read what Cane said, as she was busy gushing over him. She was a little bit embarrassed, thankfully, Cane didn’t know what she was thinking right now.
"Do you want to try holding her?" Cane asked her again.
"But, what if the baby cries again like earlier?" Iris was a little bit nervous, but she didn’t object, thus Cane put her in her arms, while instructing her.
"Relax your body, the baby can feel it if you are nervous."
Iris took a deep breath and tried to be as relaxed as she could. She followed his instructions and when the baby looked comfortable, Cane taught her how to feed the baby, since currently no one could breastfeed the baby.
"Don’t push it into her mouth, let her suck on it on her own."
Iris was like an obedient mentee, listening to her mentor, as she fed the baby, until she got a handle of it and was confident enough.
"Oh, I think the baby likes me now!" Iris said, feeling elated because the baby didn’t make a fuss when she drank her milk and nestled in her arms comfortably.
"Hm."
Cane watched her face lit up, as she learned a new thing. Her curls cascaded down her back and her face was as red as the color of her hair. She looked so adorable when she teased the baby and tried to talk to her.
Both of them didn’t talk about the fact Iris was here, it was almost like a tacit understanding between them. Iris had made a decision and there was no going back from it at this point, as Cane had shown her what would come when she decided to be with him.
And somehow, he felt his heart was a little bit lighter.
Was it because Iris was here? Or the sight of her holding the baby?
