Chapter 649: Whether as a Human or a Ghost, It’s Revolting
Chu Shuo had drunk quite a bit, and the alcohol was making him smell strongly of liquor. "Sixth Sister, didn’t you say you were here to catch ghosts? Why are we at the Li residence?"
He wasn’t completely drunk, though—his mind was still clear.
Suddenly, a cold wind blew.
Turning around, he saw a ghost standing with its head bowed and disheveled hair. He was instantly horrified. "Oh my god! There’s a ghost!"
In a panic, he grabbed the nearest person, trying to pull them in front of him as a shield. However, instead of pulling the person, he ended up with a severed arm in his hands.
"..."
Xie Beihan looked at his shoulder. "Shuo, can you be gentler? I can still feel pain, you know!"
"Sorry." Chu Shuo had gained some experience by now and didn’t faint from the shock. He gave an awkward grin and handed the severed arm back.
But while he didn’t faint, everyone else in the yard was either terrified, their faces turning pale, or they fainted outright.
Xie Beihan shot him a glare. "This is all your fault!"
Chu Shuo, feeling a bit wronged, looked at Nanli. "Sixth Sister, can you stop making scarecrows out of him? Can’t you make a wooden puppet instead? It’s more useful."
Nanli shook her head. "No, no, wooden puppets are too stiff. It wouldn’t be convenient for him to use."
Chu Shuo was left with no choice but to go over and wake up the Li family, explaining Xie Beihan’s current situation.
Since they had already seen Cao Qing turn into an evil ghost and knew that Xie Beihan was dead, they quickly accepted the situation.
However, Li Bin shed tears as he said, "Beihan, my brother, how could you end up like this..."
He walked up and asked, "Can this severed arm be reattached?"
"No, it can’t," Xie Beihan replied. "Later, let Sixth Sister make me another scarecrow. I’m fine, though—my wife is pregnant! Li Brother, when my son has his full moon celebration, you must come and have a drink!"
Seeing him so optimistic made Li Bin cry even harder.
Chu Shuo, who had been mourning for a long time, couldn’t hold back anymore either, and together with Xie Beihan, they sobbed, embracing the scarecrow and wailing.
Cao Qing, witnessing this, couldn’t stand it any longer. His ghostly energy spread out as he bared his teeth. "Bin’er, I’m your real father. I die, and you don’t cry. But when others die, you cry like this..."
Li Bin wiped his tears and replied, "We severed ties long ago. No matter how many times you die, I won’t shed a single tear for you."
Chu Shuo and Xie Beihan suddenly remembered they were just here for the spectacle.
"Lord Cao?" Chu Shuo was startled. "What happened? Lord Cao, you were fine during the day, so how did you die so suddenly at night?"
Xie Beihan looked at Cao Qing with some confusion. "Sixth Sister, he must have just died today, right? How did he turn into an evil ghost so quickly?"
Nanli answered effortlessly:
"He died with a grudge, only thinking of revenge, so naturally, he became an evil ghost."
"From the strength of his ghostly power, his grudge must be quite large."
Madam Li immediately shielded Su Chan upon hearing this.
"That Cao, we have no ties with him anymore. Why can’t he just let us go? Why must he come for revenge? If he demands a life, he should take mine!"
Li Bin, however, was unafraid. "Mother, the Ninth Princess is here. He can’t do anything wrong."
Cao Qing stared at them blankly. "I die, and you don’t even ask why..."
Li Bin answered, "Why should I ask about someone who has nothing to do with me?"
Fortunately, he had made the decision to marry Su Chan, or their wedding would have been delayed again.
Cao Qing’s ghost wavered, his expression dull.
He suddenly laughed in a sinister, terrifying way. "Yeah, it’s all my fault... I brought this upon myself. I should bear the consequences myself."
He then picked up the silver on the ground and put it back into a bag.
With Nanli present, he didn’t dare to approach Madam Li directly but held the bag up with eyes full of longing.
"I know I was wrong. The silver I gave them, I’ve returned it all."
"Madam Li, I have no other requests. I just hope you’ll allow my son and daughter-in-law to offer me a cup of tea..."
During Li Bin’s wedding, Cao Qing hadn’t been invited. After seeking revenge on those ungrateful students, this was all he had left to wish for.
Madam Li’s face changed, and she stepped forward. "Impossible! What use is it to realize your mistakes after death? Cao, whether alive or dead, you are disgusting!"
Did he think that returning the silver could erase the past?
She and her son had suffered for over twenty years because of him!
Seeing her so agitated, Cao Qing could only place his hopes on Li Bin.
He looked at him, desperate.
"Bin’er..."
"Don’t even think about it. After you die, I won’t even bury you or put up a tombstone," Li Bin said expressionlessly.
Everyone present found this response perfectly normal.
Especially the servants in the household, who knew how Madam Li and her son had suffered. They knew that just because Cao Qing brought back some silver didn’t mean he could earn their forgiveness.
At this moment, a figure from the Nether Sect appeared.
The ghost envoy stepped forward and saw Cao Qing. "Finally found you! Where have you been? In just a few hours, how did you turn into an evil ghost?"
He took out a little notebook, ready to check the details, when he turned and saw Ye Siheng and Nanli.
"Ah, esteemed ancestors!" The ghost envoy bowed to them, "What a coincidence. Do you want me to call Hell Lord and Granny Meng to keep you company?"
"Can they drink?" Nanli asked with a gleam in her eyes.
Ye Siheng pulled her to his side, gently guiding her away. "No need. Do your job."
The others, except for the couple and Xie Beihan, couldn’t see the ghost envoy or the Nether Sect.
Seeing them talk to the air made everyone feel even more eerie about the situation.
"Alright!" The ghost envoy was about to take Cao Qing using the soul-binding rope when Cao Qing, knowing he had killed many people and fearing he wouldn’t see his family again, suddenly lashed out.
His ghostly power, still quite strong, along with the lingering grudge, sent the ghost envoy flying.
The entire yard was filled with ghostly energy, chilling the air and draining the atmosphere.
Though Nanli wasn’t entirely clear-headed, she quickly reacted and used a talisman to suppress Cao Qing.
The ghostly energy receded, and the ghost envoy got back up, angrily whipping Cao Qing twice. "You’re such a bold ghost!"
He then turned to Nanli to thank her and began pulling Cao Qing into the Nether World.
Cao Qing, now panicking, cried out: "Ninth Princess, weren’t you trying to accumulate merit? I’m kneeling here! Please save me! I only wish to fulfill my wish before I enter the underworld!"
He had noticed Nanli’s high standing in the Nether World and hoped for her mercy.
The ghost envoy paused, waiting for Nanli’s decision.
Nanli smiled. "I can’t take that on. You should go now."
She waved her hand.
The ghost envoy immediately grabbed him and pulled him away.
Cao Qing kept shouting: "Madam Li, Bin’er, why can’t you forgive me... Why?!"
As the Nether Sect closed, he disappeared, and his voice faded.
Madam Li and the others were left confused.
It was Xie Beihan who explained, "The ghost envoy took him away."
Li Bin bit his lip. No matter how emotionless he tried to appear, the truth was, Cao Qing was still his father, and it was impossible not to feel something.
