Chapter 603: She’s Not a Ghost, She Wants Jujube Cake
The shopkeeper rubbed his fingers together in a money-counting gesture.
"If Lord Xie wants to hear more, how about a little reward?"
After all, tea costs money, and telling stories takes effort.
Xie Beihan slammed the table, summoning his guards.
"I’m so broke I can barely afford to eat, and you still have the nerve to ask me for money? Are you going to continue, or should I have my men smash up your shop?"
"L-Lord Xie, how could you bully a small businessman like this? I... I’ll report you to the authorities!" the shopkeeper stammered, trembling.
Xie Beihan sneered coldly. "Since you’re already accusing me of bullying, do you think reporting it would make a difference?"
Swallowing nervously, the shopkeeper had no choice but to yield to Xie Beihan’s intimidation and continue his tale.
Although Han Zhiyu had fainted, Mrs. Han was still conscious.
She watched as Death God withdrew her divine power, and the mark on her forehead faded.
The little ghost queen gazed at Death God, entranced, feeling an inexplicable fondness for her. She found her trustworthy.
"You... you’re so beautiful."
Death God chuckled, her eyes filled with warmth as she touched the little ghost queen’s nose lightly.
"You’re quite adorable yourself. Your soul is powerful, but you’ve taken a wrong path. Little one, your burden of sin is indeed heavy."
The little ghost queen pouted, unsure of what to do.
Xuan Jingmo, having risen to his feet, looked puzzled. "If Death God herself says her sins are heavy, why protect her from heavenly lightning? A ghost king like her is unacceptable to the Heavenly Dao and must be destroyed."
Death God glanced at him, offering a bit of wisdom.
"Your talismans are well-made but lack compassion for humans and ghosts alike. Killing a ghost king does rid the world of evil, but guiding her to atone for her sins and do good would be better, wouldn’t it?"
Xuan Jingmo froze in thought.
All his life, he had slain demons, eliminated monsters, and eradicated vengeful spirits without mercy.
He lowered his gaze, murmuring, "But if you don’t pull them up by the roots, they may return and kill again."
"There are indeed certain demons and ghosts undeserving of mercy," Death God replied, looking at the little ghost queen. "But this little one was only five when she died. Considering her torment, her actions are understandable. Evaluate each case and take responsibility for your decisions so you can be at peace."
Xuan Jingmo felt as if he had gained sudden clarity.
"But the Heavenly Dao... won’t allow her to live."
"I will allow her."
Death God then raised her voice to the heavens.
"She will follow me into the Nether World and work off her sins over the next two thousand years. Do you object?"
The sky remained silent.
Xuan Jingmo’s mouth twitched slightly.
The heavens accepted her decision without hesitation?
But the little ghost queen let out a whimper, clinging to Death God’s robe with wide eyes. "But I don’t want to work. I want to stay with my father and mother..."
Two thousand years... That would take forever.
Mrs. Han, who hadn’t dared to speak until now, hurriedly interjected.
"Death God, would it be possible for her to live a lifetime with us?"
Death God replied, "In this life, she’s not destined to be your kin, and her ghostly energy would significantly impact you if she stayed."
Mrs. Han’s face fell as she looked at the little ghost queen, unable to hide her sadness.
Death God added, "However, you and Han Zhiyu will have a chance to be her family again after fifteen lifetimes."
Mrs. Han’s face lit up with joy. "Really?"
The little ghost queen’s eyes widened as well.
Death God gave a small nod. "As the saying goes, those who never forget will have their wish fulfilled."
With a wave of her sleeve, a large door appeared, open and inviting.
Death God set the little ghost queen down, giving her a chance to bid farewell to Mrs. Han and Han Zhiyu.
The little ghost queen hesitated, worried that her ghostly aura would affect them.
Death God’s voice was gentle, "Go on, it’s okay."
With renewed courage, the little ghost queen walked over and embraced Mrs. Han.
Even though Han Zhiyu was still unconscious, she didn’t forget about him.
"Father... Mother..." the little ghost queen sobbed uncontrollably.
Mrs. Han wiped away her icy tears. "Be good and work hard. Death God is compassionate and merciful to take you in, so you must be diligent and obedient. Don’t let her kindness go to waste, understand?"
The little ghost queen nodded, taking a few steps and looking back at every turn.
Mrs. Han also found it hard to part, but in the end, she turned her head away resolutely.
The little ghost queen returned to Death God’s side, took her hand, and said earnestly, "I’ll work hard."
"Good girl." Death God raised her hand, instantly cleansing the house of all ghostly energy, including what had tainted Han Zhiyu, Mrs. Han, and their son.
Together, the tall figure and the little ghost queen walked through the door.
The gate to the Nether Sect remained open, and numerous wandering souls attempted to squeeze through, hoping for a chance to reincarnate.
Death God did not stop them. However, when one male ghost tried to push the others aside to get in first, an invisible force flung him back.
Shocked, he tried to approach again, but Death God, standing still, barred his entry.
"Why?! Why can they enter, but you won’t let me through?! I don’t want to stay in the human world anymore!" the male ghost shouted, outraged.
If he couldn’t reach the Nether World, he would soon dissipate completely.
Death God’s face remained indifferent, devoid of any sympathy. "They missed the ghost envoy’s guidance for various reasons, while you are irredeemably evil. Allowing you into the Nether World would waste space."
With that, the Nether Sect closed and faded like mist.
Seeing himself miss such a rare opportunity, the male ghost flew into a rage.
He turned his gaze toward Han Zhiyu, his ghostly energy surging.
He wanted to drain the life energy of a living person, which would strengthen his ghost power and allow him to survive longer in the human world.
As he approached, he was struck by a Peachwood Sword and dissolved into nothingness.
It was Firewood Chopper, who laughed heartily. "I understand now!"
Heaven has the virtue of giving life, and Earth is generous in sustaining beings. He didn’t need to kill every demon, eradicate every monster, and capture every ghost.
If he could lead them to good, his merit would be greater.
It was the truly evil spirits, like the one he had just destroyed, that Heaven and Earth would never tolerate!
His heartlessness should be reserved for those monsters, demons, and spirits beyond redemption.
Suddenly, thunderclouds rumbled overhead.
Mrs. Han felt a twinge of fear.
Xuan Jingmo glanced back at her and, with a wave of his sleeve, moved Han Zhiyu to the hallway.
"Don’t be afraid, madam. This is my thunder tribulation. Once I overcome it, I will reach the next realm!"
"Well... congratulations?" Mrs. Han replied, unsure of what to say.
"Thank you!" Xuan Jingmo flew up to face the lightning. "Here I come!"
Thunder echoed through the night.
Meanwhile, the Han family’s son’s illness finally lifted.
In gratitude for Death God’s compassion, Han Zhiyu painted a portrait of her, hanging it in his home and making daily offerings of incense.
Later, Death God even appeared to him in a dream.
Hearing this, Xie Beihan grew anxious again.
"Did Death God take the little ghost queen to see them?"
The shopkeeper shook his head. "Death God said she’s not a ghost, so she doesn’t need incense. She wants jujube cake instead."
