Chapter 419: We’ll Just Take the Opportunity
"Master!" The young Taoists cried out, scrambling to support Ming Pei.
The woman who had broken the formation stood amidst the howling wind, her clothes and a few strands of hair fluttering. She turned slightly, saw Ming Pei’s pitiable state, and her fierce face softened with gratitude. "Thank you, old man."
Had he not worked so hard to create an opening, she might not have been able to cleave through the formation with her thunderous blade. Fortunately, Ming Pei had lost consciousness. If he knew he had made way for someone else to shine, he would likely vomit another mouthful of blood.
The young Taoists observed her attire--simple and looking no more than sixteen or seventeen years old. She was dressed as a wandering hero, with her hair secured by a band and exuding a strong, martial presence. Besides her great axe, she carried nothing related to Taoist practices.
"May I ask your name and which master you follow?" Cangsheng, a young Taoist, asked. With one blow breaking the formation, he was curious about her background.
"I’m Qi Mu, from Qi Castle." Qi Mu rested the great axe on her shoulder. "We’re just wandering heroes in my family, not ghost hunters. But our ancestors passed down a Heaven-Shocking Blade. It’s exceptionally tough, killing both men and ghosts. I’m merely intervening today."
Cangsheng furrowed his brows in surprise. Qi Castle was obscure in the martial world, yet they possessed such a formidable blade? It rivaled even the Ninth Princess’s Dark Moon Sword!
Qi Mu glanced at them dismissively. "Aren’t you Taoists supposed to be saving people? Why are you just standing here?"
With that, she turned and rushed into the Xue residence.
Cangsheng, realizing the urgency, said, "Leave one person to watch over the master. We’ll go in and assess the situation!"
The others agreed and followed Cangsheng into the residence.
Inside, many lives had already been lost, their souls devoured, leaving the evil spirits well-fed and powerful. Even though the formation had been broken and the place now filled with yang energy, it had little effect on the evil spirits.
Cangsheng and his companions had hoped to make a name for themselves, impressing the Ninth Princess. But when faced with the ferocious spirits, they were paralyzed with fear, their faces turning pale, their legs trembling. They forgot how to use their talismans and Peachwood Swords.
The evil spirits charged at them, relishing the strong, pure souls.
Cangsheng was the first to react, casting a Ghost-Expelling Talisman. But the small talisman was ineffective, turning to ash almost instantly.
Panicking, Cangsheng’s eyes widened.
Then the familiar red figure appeared, leaping through the air with a blade in both hands. She brought the blade down heavily on an evil spirit.
The blade’s back shone with golden light.
In an instant, the evil spirit was cleaved in half! The spirit was astonished--ordinary weapons couldn’t harm it. It tried to restore its form but found that the blade had burned the wound, preventing recovery.
Qi Mu’s face remained expressionless as she swiftly continued to slice the evil spirits into pieces, ensuring they could not reassemble.
Placing the great axe on the ground, she looked back at the young Taoists. "You’re all useless. Why don’t you call for help?"
It wasn’t that she thought herself incapable, but she was merely a martial hero and could handle a few evil spirits. More than that, and she’d be struggling too.
Cangsheng’s face shifted from red to white, clenching his fists. "You only managed to deal with the spirits because of that powerful blade. What’s there to be so proud of?"
Qi Mu laughed. "With a blade this powerful, how can I not be proud?"
The Taoists were envious, irritated by her success. She shrugged and leapt onto a rooftop, heading to other areas.
The young Taoists wondered if they should inform their master and the Ninth Princess. Such formidable spirits were beyond their capacity to handle. Trying to rescue people could only put them in greater danger.
Cangsheng, watching Qi Mu leave, gritted his teeth. "Our master and the second master have always looked down on us. Why don’t we use this opportunity to make a name for ourselves?"
The others exchanged glances. Fame was great, but it was dangerous to risk their lives.
Cangsheng was quick to snatch away their communication talismans, tearing them to shreds. "What are you afraid of? With that woman leading the charge, she’ll handle most of the spirits. We’ll just take advantage of the situation."
The others frowned, unsure. "But how can we just take advantage? She’s not making things easy for us to claim the credit."
Cangsheng smirked coldly. "Why not? She’s just a martial hero. With her attracting the spirits, she’ll eventually be overwhelmed and die. When she’s out of the picture, the credit will naturally fall to us."
The young Taoists hesitated but were swayed by Cangsheng’s argument. They decided to follow his plan, knowing that if it failed, they could always claim the communication talismans were damaged by the spirits.
Though they were not yet skilled enough to deal with the spirits, they managed to track Qi Mu to a small courtyard.
Inside, several Xue family members were hiding, including Lord Xue. He had survived by using a Protection Talisman, but with many souls devoured, the talisman’s effectiveness was waning. The evil spirits, having realized the potency of Qi Mu’s Heaven-Shocking Blade, avoided its attacks with agility.
Qi Mu, though powerful, was sweating and showing signs of exhaustion. She struggled to keep wielding her great axe.
Lord Xue, in a panic, cried out, "Heroine, hold on! Our lives are in your hands!"
As he shouted, he tried to sneak away, figuring this place was no longer safe.
The evil spirits, uninterested in Lord Xue, were drawn to Qi Mu’s stronger and more delectable soul. Seeing her in a weakened state, they began to converge on her with relentless aggression!
The spirits came from all directions!
Qi Mu was unable to avoid them, seemingly facing only one fate: being torn apart by the spirits and becoming their meal!
