Chapter 244: Do You Believe It Yourself?
He Wen glared at her, his tone harsh. "Do you know how much time another demon-catching drama would take? Fan Shizhong has already sent people to chase the Ninth Princess. Do you want us to get caught?"
Sang Wan shrank back, lowering her eyes. "No... it’s just that drawing talismans only brings in small money."
He Wen sat down, pouring himself a cup of tea with his left hand. After gulping it down, his throat felt somewhat soothed.
He snorted, "Indeed, it’s small money, but as long as we stay alive, we’ll never run out of opportunities. The best strategy is to leave quickly."
Sang Wan pressed her lips together and continued putting the silver into the Qiankun Bag.
He Wen rested for a while but didn’t stay idle. His master had left him many items, including the Demon Lock and some rare talismans. His master’s skills were mediocre, so these talismans were inherited from their ancestors. By He Wen’s generation, few were left.
He Wen pulled out a teleportation talisman, the only one he had. Though he was reluctant to use it, he knew that if he left in haste in the morning, it would arouse Fan Shizhong’s suspicion. So, he had no choice but to use the talisman.
Sang Wan, having been with him for a long time, recognized the teleportation talisman. She paused her movements slightly, a glint of cunning flashing in her eyes.
"Husband, this Qiankun Bag seems to be broken," she said softly.
He Wen felt a surge of disgust. "Stop using that tone with me. Do you still think I’ll fall for it? This Qiankun Bag was passed down from our grandmaster. It’s waterproof and fireproof; how could it be broken?"
He set down the teleportation talisman and bent over to check.
At that moment, Sang Wan suddenly stood up, her hand flicking to unleash her demonic power, knocking over the teapot on the table. The tea spilled, soaking the teleportation talisman. The cinnabar ink began to dissolve.
He Wen froze, then turned to see what Sang Wan had done. His eyes widened, and his face twisted in rage. "You wretch!"
This was the only teleportation talisman, and very few people could draw one. On the black market, it would sell for at least several thousand taels of silver. And now, she had ruined it!
A demon-warding talisman fell, making Sang Wan feel as if her whole body was being burned by fire, causing unbearable pain. She loathed the Demon Lock. It prevented her from harming He Wen and left her unable to struggle or escape.
He Wen, furious and heartbroken over the talisman, felt unsatisfied. He pounced on her, slapping her hard across the face several times.
Breathing heavily, he glared at her. "I feed you, I clothe you, and this is how you repay me, huh?"
Despite her agony, Sang Wan managed a cold laugh, her voice squeezing through clenched teeth. "You deceived me into marrying you, then put the Demon Lock on me while I slept, forcing me to kill and rip out hearts. How should I repay you?"
Innocent people had died by her hand—dozens, if not hundreds. She had long had enough of this life.
Destroying the teleportation talisman, making it impossible for He Wen to leave Ruyang City, would lead to mutual destruction, giving her a chance for liberation!
"You wretch!" He Wen, though filled with hatred, understood Sang Wan’s intentions. The more she sought escape, the less he could afford to kill her.
He smiled coldly, "Do you really think that without the teleportation talisman, I can’t leave Ruyang City? I’ve been practicing Taoist arts for over ten years; I’m no coward."
Sang Wan’s heart sank. "What... what do you mean?"
He Wen’s smile grew sinister as he stood and rummaged through a small stack of talismans, quickly pulling one out and waving it in front of Sang Wan.
Sang Wan had never seen this type of talisman before and didn’t know its function.
"This is an earth escape talisman. With it, I can still get out of Ruyang City," He Wen said.
Sang Wan struggled to stand, trying to destroy the earth escape talisman. But the demon-warding talisman was suppressing her, making her weaker than an ordinary person.
He Wen easily kicked her aside and leaned down, speaking each word slowly, "Trying to kill me? You’re not capable yet. We are married; you’ll never escape my grasp."
Sang Wan whimpered, tears of regret streaming down her face. She didn’t want to resign to fate and made a final attempt to fight back. But He Wen wouldn’t give her the chance. If it weren’t for the risk of making too much noise, he would have used the Demon Lock to make her suffer even more.
For now, he held back. He struck her with another talisman, immediately transforming Sang Wan back to her original form. He quickly packed the Qiankun Bag, tied it to his waist, and carefully dragged Sang Wan out.
The earth escape talisman required contact with the ground to activate but had a limited range. With his current abilities, he could only travel two or three hundred meters. He needed to get close to the city wall to ensure a safe escape from Ruyang City.
They made their way to the perimeter of the government office compound, careful to avoid patrolling guards. He Wen was well-prepared, with many immobilization talismans in his pocket. Even if discovered, he could stop anyone in their tracks with a single talisman.
Sang Wan, in her suppressed form, could only let He Wen drag her along. They reached the compound wall. Desperate, she knew that if He Wen escaped, catching him again would be nearly impossible.
He Wen climbed the wall, but as he reached the top, a red light flashed, and a force threw him back, slamming him heavily to the ground. He groaned in pain, feeling as if his internal organs had shifted, rendering him unable to move.
Soon, footsteps surrounded them, and guards with torches quickly encircled He Wen. His mind raced; knowing Sang Wan was now in her original form, he considered sacrificing her.
He struggled to his feet, enduring the pain. "Everyone, look! I used all my strength to finally capture this harmful demon!"
He dragged Sang Wan forward, displaying her with a righteous facade. Sang Wan wanted to expose his true nature but was too weak to speak.
The guards looked at him coldly. He Wen, initially confident, felt his heart sink at their reaction.
More footsteps approached, accompanied by voices.
"Was I right? He’s in Ruyang."
"Sixth Sister’s intuition is spot on. But using the same trick again? That’s a bit stupid."
"Stupid? He’s managed to swindle money again."
The guards made way as Nanli and Xie Beihan stepped forward, stopping a few steps from He Wen. Both looked down at him.
Seeing them, He Wen’s heart froze.
He trembled, "Noble Prince, if I say it’s a different cat demon, would you believe me?"
Xie Beihan rolled his eyes, "Do you believe it yourself?"
