Chapter 42: Chapter 42 Clues

"Let’s go." Lin Guoliang put away his phone.

"Did the girl specify a location?"

"She mentioned an arc-shaped building, so I think it must be the commercial building at the Northeast corner," Jiang Xiyue said.

As a policewoman, she was quite familiar with the surrounding environment, including the layout of unfinished buildings.

Lin Guoliang walked ahead, carefully observing the surroundings as he went.

"Master, what’s going on?" Jiang Xiyue asked.

"If this really is a murder case, then it’s possible the murderer left through this route because there’s only one way out. Keep an eye out for anything unusual," Lin Guoliang said.

Jiang Xiyue’s eyes lit up, and she quickly responded, "Master, you really think of everything. Why didn’t I consider that?"

"It’s just some experience. Give it time, and you’ll come to know these things too," Lin Guoliang said nonchalantly.

Although Jiang Xiyue had been taught these things at the police academy, not everyone is a natural-born detective, nor can everyone apply their learning to their work.

The two of them continued forward, noting that although there were signs of passage, there was nothing particularly unusual about the path.

"Do you think if a murder did happen here, was it the girl who found it on her own or was someone else who discovered it and sent her to report it?" Lin Guoliang asked.

"I think someone else must have found it and told the girl to report it. This place is too secluded; I don’t think she would come here on her own," Jiang Xiyue said.

"How old is the girl and what does she look like?" Lin Guoliang inquired.

"About twelve or thirteen years old, looks quite frail and vigilant..."

Jiang Xiyue recalled, describing Yin Xingyue’s characteristics one by one.

At this moment, they finally arrived at the commercial building. Because it had been forsaken for too long, there was a lot of trash inside, and weeds had overtaken the area. Since it was summer, a foul odor was emanating from it.

"Be careful," Lin Guoliang cautioned.

They switched on their law enforcement recorders and cautiously made their way upstairs.

"Eh?"

Lin Guoliang seemed to notice something and squatted down.

Jiang Xiyue, on the lookout, was also curious about what Lin Guoliang had found.

After a few glances, she realized they were cigarette butts.

Lin Guoliang looked at the steps above and then said, "Someone has been sitting here smoking, and it must have been in the last few days."

He said this because the cigarette butts looked very fresh.

Lin Guoliang didn’t touch the butts; if a murder had occurred upstairs, the forensic team would collect these items, which might contain clues to the murderer.

So he reminded Jiang Xiyue to watch her step, and they continued upstairs and quickly reached the fifth floor.

Since it was a commercial building, the entire fifth floor was very spacious.

"Master, should we split up to search?" Jiang Xiyue asked.

"Why split up? It’s better to be slow than to put ourselves in danger."

Lin Guoliang pulled out the extendable baton from his waist, while Jiang Xiyue took out her tear spray.

They each covered a side, carefully searching as they went, and soon at a corner, they found a woman bound to a chair.

Lin Guoliang carefully approached and checked the woman’s breath, then faced Jiang Xiyue’s puzzled gaze, nodding to confirm that the woman was indeed dead.

Lin Guoliang put away his extendable baton, pulled out his phone, and began to take detailed photographs, while Jiang Xiyue stayed on alert, curiously looking around.

Just then, they suddenly heard the sound of police sirens from outside.

The two rushed to the side of the building. The incomplete structure offered no obstructions, and being high up, they had a clear view of everything below.

They saw several police cars parked by the roadside, and then six or seven police officers disembarked from the vehicles.

Lin Guoliang seemed to recognize a familiar figure among the crowd, standing tall in the evening’s fading light.

"It seems like it’s the people from the city criminal police team."

"Did they also receive the report?" Jiang Xiyue wondered.

Clearly, they were here for the body, which meant someone must have reported it to them.

"Let’s go, let’s head down," Lin Guoliang said.

So the two of them descended the stairs and advanced towards the group of people.

At this moment, Captain Xia Baokun of the Criminal Police Team’s First Squad was leading his team from the entrance towards the inside.

When they saw Lin Guoliang and his partner coming towards them, both sides showed a look of surprise.

Captain Xia was surprised to see the two officers here, evidently someone had given them a tip.

Lin Guoliang was surprised to see that they’d brought a forensic investigator with them; clearly, it was not just a simple report but a confirmed crime scene.

"Captain Xia," Lin Guoliang greeted first.

Lin Guoliang recognized Captain Xia, but Captain Xia didn’t recognize him, though he found him somewhat familiar.

Lin Guoliang took the initiative to introduce himself and Jiang Xiyue, "Captain Xia, I’m Lin Guoliang from Yuxiu Police Station up ahead, and this is Jiang Xiyue."

"Oh, Chief Gu is your boss," Captain Xia vaguely recalled.

Lin Guoliang smiled and nodded, "Right, Captain Xia has a good memory."

It was not easy for Captain Xia to remember their chief among the hundreds of police stations in Bin Hai City.

"Why are you guys here?" Captain Xia asked with a smile.

And the detectives behind him had not yet spoken, just observing them with hints of caution.

Thus, Lin Guoliang explained the reason for their arrival, including the discovery of cigarette butts on the steps, and the sight of the female corpse, in detail.

Since the story was straightforward, it didn’t take long to tell.

Lastly, he said, "Our law enforcement recorders have been on the entire time, Captain Xia, I’ll send it to you once we get back."

Captain Xia nodded at the words, but his expression became more serious.

"You said a young girl reported the crime, do you remember what she looked like?" Captain Xia inquired Jiang Xiyue.

"I remember."

"Then later, you can give a verbal description, and I will have someone sketch her appearance," said Captain Xia.

"Actually, it’s not that troublesome, because I saw her right at the entrance of the police station, and there are surveillance cameras. We can just review the footage when we return," Jiang Xiyue suggested.

Captain Xia laughed, "Right, look at me, I forgot about that. By the way, you’re Jiang Xiyue, what is Jiang Haitao to you?"

"He’s my father," Jiang Xiyue replied.

On hearing this, Captain Xia’s expression softened somewhat as he gently said, "You guys go back first, I’ll come see your chief later."

"Okay, Captain Xia, we won’t keep you any longer," Lin Guoliang quickly left with Jiang Xiyue.

With the clues provided by Lin Guoliang and his team, Captain Xia and his team quickened their pace.

The cigarette butts found on the steps were naturally collected and then sent to the evidence department.

When they reached the fifth floor, they finally saw the female corpse.

So the forensic team began, photographing the scene and searching for clues, all becoming busy.

Instead, Captain Xia had nothing at hand, went to the window, lit a cigarette, and happened to see the backs of Lin Guoliang and his partner leaving.

Watching their backs, Captain Xia revealed a thoughtful expression.

They came here today and even brought all hands on deck, certainly because someone had provided them with reliable information that there was a homicide.

And this was not the first incident but the third this month, with the murderer’s methods nearly identical.

However, the body for this third case was discovered prematurely; was it really just a coincidence?

Considering how secluded this place is, even vagrants might not want to come here, so how did the person who reported it find out?
