Chapter 305: The House of Kindness
Chapter 305: Chapter 305: The House of Kindness
Grandma Hu Huaiqiu had three children, but by the third generation, things weren’t particularly prosperous.
Besides the eldest, Ding Zhiwei, the second child Ding Zhijie and the youngest Ding Simei each had only one child.
Ding Zhijie’s family has a boy who just started his senior year of high school, looking forward to college. The lad, with a mouth full of fuzz and a tall stature, appears quite gentle, although in his childhood he was incredibly mischievous, and was much doted on by Grandma.
The youngest Ding Simei has a daughter who just started the seventh grade, a lively little girl. Just entering junior high, she’s still excited about the new environment, not yet "worn down" by school life, and still acts like an elementary school student, speaking loudly, silly and playful, bouncing around, bringing laughter to the entire family.
Grandma wanted them to have another child to provide a playmate, but the couple were in firm agreement and outright refused.
As the children grew older, Grandma could no longer dictate their choices, so she let them be. Thankfully, the eldest had several children.
The eldest had been divorced once, first had two children with his ex-wife, and then had three more with his current wife, thus bringing hope to the entire family.
However, Grandma was somewhat critical, jokingly calling them a mixed bunch.
But having some was better than none, and since they didn’t often return home, she let it be. Children and grandchildren have their own good fortune.
When the knock on the door was heard, Ding Simei’s daughter was the most eager, rushing up in three steps to open the door, completely forgetting her mother’s instruction to ask who it was before opening.
But today it wasn’t too big of a problem, after all, the whole family was at home, and there was no fear of running into any bad people.
However, when the door opened, the little girl was somewhat stunned.
Because standing at the doorway were three people: a police officer, a stunningly beautiful sister, and a middle-aged woman.
"Is Grandma Hu at home?"
The one who spoke was the middle-aged woman, her manner very kind.
Her voice was loud, so everyone inside heard it. The first to come out was Ding Simei. She found the middle-aged woman somewhat familiar and her guard was lowered quite a bit, but seeing a police officer standing next to her, she felt inexplicably flustered, not out of fear for the police, but out of concern that her mother might have been scammed.
With so many scam calls these days, and Grandma being so old, it was inconceivable that she could be in trouble. The only thing she could think of was being scammed.
"I’m from the neighborhood office," said the middle-aged woman.
Ding Simei realized in hindsight why she seemed familiar, having indeed seen her a few times before.
"May I ask what brings you here?" Ding Simei inquired.
At that moment, Ding Simei’s husband and Ding Zhijie both walked over, curiously looking at the several people at the door; naturally, most of their gaze fell on the silent woman standing aside.
The woman wore a smile, and just standing there attracted everyone’s gaze unconsciously, unable to be shifted away, with an indescribable allure.
This woman was none other than Song Meixian, who, after finding Mao Sanmei, stayed in Jiangyou without leaving.
She came herself to deal with this matter, on one hand, to show that they took it seriously, and on the other, to foster a good relationship with Mao Sanmei.
They had long ago learned of Shen Siyuan’s affection for Tang Tang and thought that Shen might adopt her, although Shen did not qualify for adoption. They even considered whether special cases called for special measures.
Unexpectedly, Shen Siyuan had asked them to find Tang Tang’s parents, and Mao Sanmei might become a bridge between the Special Affairs Bureau and Shen Siyuan in the future.
Of course, this was also a contingency, useful if it worked and inconsequential if it didn’t, so why not do it?
In fact, it wasn’t just Mao Sanmei; they even had someone placed inside Guanghui Animation, only to find that Shen Siyuan resigned outright.
Think not that their actions were exaggerated, for Shen Siyuan’s displayed abilities validated such attention.
"I’m Officer Zhao Haifeng from the Red Light Police Station," the policeman standing aside took the initiative to introduce himself.
However, upon hearing this, the woman from the neighborhood office looked at him with a touch of surprise because he was not just any officer but the chief of the Red Light Police Station.
"Is Miss Mao at your house?"
"Yes, may I ask what you want with her?" asked Ding Simei, a bit flustered.
She worried that Miss Mao might be some fugitive who pretended to be deaf and mute, hiding in their home.
Seemingly perceiving Ding Simei’s nervousness, Officer Zhao reassured her, "Don’t panic, Miss Mao’s daughter has been found, and we want to verify some information with her."
Hearing this, the Ding family let out a sigh of relief, and then Ding Simei quickly patted her daughter in front of her.
"Quickly go and call Aunt Mao over."
At this point, the Ding family curiously crowded around the door, even Grandma being supported by her daughter-in-law, asking curiously what was happening.
"Officer, why don’t you come in and talk?" Ding Zhijie invited.
"We’d better not, our shoes are dirty," replied Zhao Haifeng.
With the floors at home wiped spotlessly clean, they didn’t want to barge in and dirty someone else’s house.
"It’s fine, Xiao Mao is both deaf and mute, communication isn’t easy, come in and we can talk slowly," said Grandma.
Hearing this, Zhao Haifeng turned to look at Song Meixian standing beside.
Song Meixian heard and nodded lightly.
Everyone suddenly realized that the three of them were actually led by this young lady.
Seeing Song Meixian’s agreement, Zhao Haifeng said he was disturbing them before entering the house, but still took off his shoes.
Then the women from the neighborhood committee followed Song Meixian into the house.
Ding Simei greeted everyone to take a seat. Everyone was curious about where Mao Sanmei’s daughter had been found, how she was doing now, and whether the police were so capable these days.
You see, it hadn’t been long since Mao Sanmei reported her daughter missing. It was Ding Simei who accompanied her to report it. However, due to her inability to speak, she could give very little description of her daughter. The child was too small and there were no photographs. Reporting the case wasn’t really much different from not doing so—it was just for peace of mind.
At that time, Ding Simei felt there was little hope of finding her, but to her surprise, they had succeeded.
"The child is doing very well now. We were able to find Miss Mao through clues associated with the child and now we just need to confirm their mother-daughter relationship," Song Meixian explained, speaking for the first time.
She placed a stack of documents on the coffee table; all of them were Tang Tang’s records.
Just then, Ding Simei’s daughter pulled Mao Sanmei, who was cooking in the kitchen, into the living room.
She was busy cooking and had no idea what had happened. She even finished stir-frying a dish before coming out, unhurried.
As she entered the living room, a gust of wind seemed to blow from somewhere, lifting the documents from the coffee table. Song Meixian reached out to hold them down, looking around with some confusion.
When Mao Sanmei came out, Ding Simei stood up, energetically explaining to her through gestures and speech.
At this moment, Ding Simei’s daughter thoughtfully brought over the magnetic writing board, which was the most commonly used means of communication with Mao Sanmei.
This device was particularly convenient to use; after writing a sentence, one could erase it with the press of a button.
After understanding the situation, Mao Sanmei became extremely excited.
"Mm... Mm... Ah... Ah..."
She spoke and gestured, tears rolling down from the corners of her eyes.
"Don’t worry, your daughter is doing very well," Song Meixian said, taking out several photos from the documents and handing them to her.
These were photos of Tang Tang’s daily life, the little tyke beaming with a big, delightful smile.
"Wow, Xiao Mao, your daughter is so cute," Ding Simei exclaimed as she leaned in for a closer look, genuinely amazed.
"Let me see, let me see..."
Grandma was even more eager than the rest, curious about what Mao Sanmei’s daughter looked like.
Song Meixian took the writing board from Ding Simei’s hand and began to write a message.
The gist was to ask Mao Sanmei to come with her to see her daughter.
Mao Sanmei nodded hurriedly as she couldn’t wait, but then she seemed to remember something else, parted the crowd, and approached Grandma, looking at her with complex emotions and teary eyes.
"Xiao Mao, this is a joyous occasion, why cry? Hurry up and go, don’t worry about me. Bring your daughter back for me to see when you find her," Grandma said with a hearty laugh.
Mao Sanmei uttered some affirming sounds and then knelt to kowtow to Grandma.
"What are you doing? Get up quickly..."
Everyone rushed to help her up.
Mao Sanmei did not dwell on it, but rather looked at Song Meixian with expectation, making gestures with her hands and making sounds, as though urging when they would leave.
Grandma looked at Song Meixian and her group, then at Mao Sanmei, suddenly suggesting, "Xiao Mei, why don’t you accompany Xiao Mao, it’s truly inconvenient for her to go alone."
Song Meixian and Ding Simei were both stunned at this suggestion.
Ding Simei was the first to respond, looking toward Song Meixian’s group.
After thinking for a moment, Song Meixian said, "Let’s go together, then. Pack lightly, you don’t need much. It’s only for one night; you can return tomorrow."
"Is it in Jiangyou?"
"No, it’s in Bin Hai, but the plane is fast."
Hearing this, everyone grew more puzzled. Bin Hai was far from Jiangyou; the plane ride alone would take at least three hours, so the arrangement must have been planned beforehand. Now, to suddenly add someone else to the trip and still have no issues seemed rushed.
"This feels very hasty..."
"If anything comes up, call me," said Ding Simei’s spouse, as a reminder.
His gaze lingered on the badge on Zhao Haifeng’s uniform. After all, there were also security cameras in the house, which was part of the reason they had invited them inside.
So Song Meixian’s group, along with Mao Sanmei and Ding Simei, left in a hurry.
However, Ding Simei stayed in touch with her family via her phone the entire way.
Song Meixian noticed but didn’t mind, as it was a truly great event, and there was nothing that couldn’t be shared publicly.
