Chapter 28 At Home
Chapter 28: Chapter 28 At Home
"Dad." Shen Siyuan called out.
Shen Jianjun steadied the car and just nodded at him, his expression serious and unsmiling.
But Shen Siyuan was already used to it, his father had always been unsmiling in his memories ever since he was a child.
However, his personality was quite the opposite, being a very gentle person.
Seeing him taking lots of stuff off the motorcycle’s back seat, Shen Siyuan stepped forward to help, but Shen Jianjun dodged.
"The stuff is heavy, I can handle it myself."
Shen Siyuan felt helpless, his father still treated him like a child.
Nevertheless, Shen Siyuan didn’t intervene anymore and directly asked, "What are these?"
"Two chickens, and some eggs. You’re visiting Grandma this afternoon, take these to her," Shen Jianjun said.
Shen Siyuan’s grandma, Yu Suzhen, lived nearby in Yu Family Mansion, belonging to Qingshui Town just like Linjiapo. She was seventy-three this year. As for Shen Siyuan’s grandfather, he was a sent-down youth who divorced Grandma to return to the city; Grandma never remarried and raised his father all by herself.
Shen Jianjun and his wife had tried to have her live with them, but after a while, she couldn’t get used to it and insisted on returning, claiming she was still fit enough to take care of herself and would only live with them when she truly couldn’t move in bed.
The old lady was very stubborn, and the couple couldn’t do much but agree, making sure to visit and take care of her frequently.
"Oh, it’s been almost two months since I last saw Grandma."
He came back a month ago, but it was a hasty visit, and he didn’t get to see her.
"Yeah, Grandma misses you. I bought her a mobile phone, but she doesn’t know how to use it and doesn’t want to learn..." Shen Jianjun said somewhat helplessly.
Once inside the house, he put the items in the refrigerator. The weather was hot, and if not refrigerated, the food would spoil by the afternoon.
"At her age, if she can’t use it, just let it be."
"I was thinking, if she misses you, she could call you herself," Shen Jianjun said.
Shen Siyuan was silent, then asked, "What about the phone? Is it deactivated?"
"No, your mom has been paying the bills. She can’t dial, but can answer. We call her sometimes, but she often forgets to charge the phone, only when I go there, I can charge it for her..."
"Leave it to me, I’ll talk to her this afternoon," Shen Siyuan said.
At this moment, his mother, Huang Huijuan, came out of the kitchen with a large glass of water.
"Old Shen, have some water."
Shen Jianjun naturally took it and then drank deeply.
Huang Huijuan naturally pulled a couple of tissues from the table to wipe the sweat off his neck.
While wiping, she complained, "Look at you, you smell of sweat. Go take a shower and change your clothes."
Though her words suggested annoyance, her face showed no sign of it.
"No need, I’m about to cook, and I’ll be all sweaty again," Shen Jianjun said.
"Our son is back, let him cook," Huang Huijuan suggested.
Shen Siyuan: ...
He was promised his favorite dishes, green stripe fish and beans stewed chicken on his return. It turns out he had to cook them himself.
Eventually, lunch was still prepared by his father, Shen Jianjun, although Shen Siyuan helped.
As for Huang Huijuan, she sat in the living room holding her hands, gleefully watching TV.
Both father and son were used to this and didn’t feel there was anything wrong.
While cooking, Shen Jianjun also asked about Shen Siyuan’s job, indicating that if he wasn’t happy with it, he could come back and raise chickens with him.
He raised Purple Shell Chickens unique to Qiong Province, characterized by their compact body, short and thin shins, thin skin, brittle bones, and sweet, tender meat.
So Purple Shell Chicken is a top dish in Qiong Province with great sales, and certainly no worries about selling.
Shen Siyuan, however, was reluctant to raise chickens as it was hard work and quite boring, even though he earned less from his current job, but it was more relaxed and comfortable.
Yet, Shen Siyuan didn’t completely reject the idea; he simply said he would think about it.
Shen Jianjun just said it casually, not forcing it; he was not very old yet and was in good health, not really needing Shen Siyuan to come back and help him.
"By the way, who did my mom set me up with this time?"
"Did your mom tell you about it?"
"No, I guessed. She’s urging me to come back, what else could it be."
Hearing this, Shen Jianjun also laughed, a rare smile appearing on his face.
"It’s Aunt Qi who set it up for you, a girl from the neighboring Shiqiao Village, she also works in Bin Hai..."
Shen Siyuan heard him say a lot and directly asked, "Is she pretty?"
"What’s the use of being pretty? For finding a partner, you need someone with good character and who can manage life well." Shen Jianjun said, dissatisfied.
"Why did you marry my mom then?"
Huang Huijuan definitely had no problem with her character, as to whether she could manage life well, umm...
"Because she was pretty."
"Hehe~"
Both of them laughed.
"What are you father and son talking about, being so happy? Let me be happy too."
"We said how pretty you are."
Now, the three of them laughed.
After lunch, Shen Siyuan didn’t delay and directly rode Shen Jianjun’s motorcycle to the Yu Family Mansion.
Dad could afford a car, he just liked riding motorcycles, really can’t figure out what he thinks.
He doesn’t think he looks cool riding a motorcycle, does he?
Thinking this might really be possible, even though Shen Jianjun now has a round-cheeked, potbellied look, he was quite a handsome young man in his youth. After all, Grandma had good genes, otherwise, Shen Siyuan’s grandfather who came down to Shanghai wouldn’t have married her.
Thinking of grandma, he was already impatient; the motorcycle sped through the sun-dappled lane, against the breeze, heading towards the direction of Yu Family Mansion, and the speed was unconsciously increasing.
Luckily, it was midday, and there were not many vehicles on the road, aside from watching out for the occasional chicken or dog that dashed out, it was quite safe.
Actually, from Linjiapo to Yu Family Mansion wasn’t far, taking only a little over half an hour by motorcycle.
However, the road was somewhat winding, passing shady paths, riverside paths, and short farm ridges, which could dizzy those unfamiliar.
Shen Siyuan’s Grandma lived at the very north end of the village, turn right after entering the village and ride for about four or five minutes, and you’re directly in front of Grandma’s house.
Grandma’s previous brick-tile house was too old, so a few years ago, Dad built her a three-room flat-roof house, installed a cement floor in front of the house, and further on were fields of rice paddies.
In terms of living environment, it was even better than where Shen Siyuan’s family was currently living; at the moment, the cement floor in front of the house was covered with dried radishes.
Probably hearing the sound of the motorcycle, Grandma came out from inside the house.
Her face was full of wrinkles, her body thin, dressed in a gray cloth outfit with a blue scarf tied around her head.
Since her eyesight wasn’t too good, she tended to squint when looking at people.
Seeing it was a motorcycle, she immediately said, "Is it Jianjun coming back?"
"Grandma, it’s me, Siyuan." Shen Siyuan turned off the motorcycle.
Upon hearing this, Grandma immediately came forward quickly, her wrinkled face breaking into a radiant smile.
