Chapter 253: Chapter 253: The First Time as a Thief
Dou Dou was initially on her way to find Duoduo, but halfway there, she spotted a duck flying in the sky.
To her great surprise, she changed course and started chasing after the duck.
Okay, duck is what she assumed it was, but in fact, it was a Qionghai Bittern, also known as a White-eared Night Heron.
This is a kind of bird that comes out at night.
Apart from the beak, it does indeed somewhat resemble a duck, so it’s no surprise Dou Dou mistook it for one.
"Little duck, don’t run away, I’ll take you home," Dou Dou said.
The Qionghai Bittern was so scared by her that it kept changing directions and flight poses, but no matter what, it couldn’t shake Dou Dou off, and eventually, it had to descend from the sky straight down to the ground.
But Dou Dou didn’t plan to let it go; with a swirl of Yin Wind, she descended from the sky.
However, as soon as she landed, she froze, perplexed. How could this duck see her?
She looked down at her body and reached out to scratch a tree trunk nearby. Then she was absolutely certain that she hadn’t become visible. Theoretically, this duck shouldn’t be able to see her.
Could it be that this duck, like Potato, could see her, or was Potato similar to this duck?
Potato was a duck, hehe~, Dou Dou amused herself with her own thoughts.
Then she suddenly remembered, where did the duck go?
She spun around on the spot, searching left and right, but couldn’t spot the duck.
"Little duck, where are you?"
"How strange."
Dou Dou scratched her head, surveying her surroundings.
This was a very secluded street with few people around. Well, maybe it was just because it was nighttime, and nobody was about.
After all, there were still many streets on both sides of the road.
Dou Dou’s gaze turned towards a pitch-black alleyway next to her. The duck must have run in there, but she was a bit scared to follow. What if there were ghosts? It was frightening.
Eh, wait, I’m a ghost myself, hehehe...
Dou Dou chuckled at herself again, happily spinning around in place.
Just then, out of the corner of her eye, she suddenly caught sight of a young man sneaking around suspiciously.
"A thief?"
Dou Dou immediately perked up, stirring up a small Yin Wind and stealthily followed him.
Dou Dou referred to the young man as a "little brother", who seemed to be about fifteen or sixteen years old, and was currently standing outside a cake shop, peering inside.
"A thief wanting to steal cakes," Dou Dou was excited.
Should she tell the police uncle? Or maybe inform Potato?
At that moment, the youth produced a piece of wire, tinkered with the lock for a bit, and the U-shaped lock that was previously secure was opened.
Then he opened the glass door of the cake shop and tiptoed in; Dou Dou curiously followed. She too walked on tiptoes, sneaking around like a little thief.
But she saw the young man heading straight for the glass showcase, opened the cupboard door, grabbed a piece of cake, and gobbled it up.
He had a clear purpose and didn’t riffle through the store randomly; he simply took several plastic bags and stuffed all the cakes from the glass showcase into the bags.
Then he carried the bags out the door and also considerately locked it up again.
When he got to the doorway, the young man set the bags down and took a deep breath, seemingly easing the tension in his heart.
Dou Dou also took a deep breath; her first time playing a thief made her nervous too, even though she didn’t steal anything, it was thrilling.
After the youth exhaled deeply, he picked up the bags again and continued to walk forward while eating, Dou Dou, driven by curiosity, kept up with him to see where he would go.
After several turns and twists, the young man finally arrived at an overgrown, abandoned old house.
It wasn’t so much abandoned as it was just long uninhabited, and the house wasn’t small either. It looked more like an office from the past rather than a residential house.
The exterior was even fenced off with wire mesh, and there was a big iron gate with a hefty iron lock.
However, the boy didn’t unlock it to enter; instead, he squeezed through a hole in the wire mesh on the side.
The boy went up to the second floor and gently pushed open the door of a room to enter.
Although there was no electricity, the moon was bright enough that evening, so one could just make out the inside of the room.
The interior of the house was very messy, with various items strewn all over the place, and in the corner, there was a bed made of cardboard, covered with a worn-out mosquito net.
"Dou Dou, are you asleep?" the boy asked.
"Brother."
The mosquito net was lifted, revealing a little girl who appeared to be only about seven or eight years old.
Apart from slightly unkempt hair, the little girl was actually rather clean.
"Look what I brought you?"
The boy shook the bag in front of the little girl with some pride.
Xiao Xue sniffed and excitedly said, "Cake?"
"Yes, eat it quickly, you haven’t had dinner tonight, are you hungry?" The boy opened the bag and handed it to the little girl.
"Thank you, brother." Xiao Xue said happily.
The boy put down the bag and took out a box of milk from the corner, handing it to Xiao Xue.
"You need to drink more milk, so you can grow taller," the boy said.
Xiao Xue took it and said, "Brother, you eat too."
"I’ve already eaten just now," the boy said.
"Brother, where did you get the cake from?" Xiao Xue asked while eating.
"I stole it; it’s from the cake shop we saw yesterday."
Xiao Xue fell silent upon hearing this, and the boy continued, "Xiao Xue, stealing is wrong, don’t learn from me. If you want something, just tell me, and I’ll steal it."
"Brother, you’re so good," Xiao Xue said.
"How am I good? I’m just a thief," the boy said.
"But I think you’re good, if it weren’t for you, I would have starved to death a long time ago," Xiao Xue said.
The boy smiled upon hearing her words, a particularly happy smile.
He also managed to find a candle and lit it; a faint light flickered throughout the room.
Potato scratched his head and wiped his eyes, oh, how touching.
Is this little sister Cinderella? Is she Snow White?
"Her mother must be very wicked, she mustn’t like her," Potato grumbled.
"I’m not wicked at all, nor do I dislike her," a woman suddenly spoke up from the side.
Okay, this isn’t a person, but a ghost, and this person was Xiao Xue’s mother.
"I meant the stepmother," Potato said.
He had seen many animations and was experienced with these things.
"Xiao Xue doesn’t have a stepmother either," the woman said.
Huh? This isn’t what I expected.
"Then it’s a stepfather?" Potato ventured to ask.
"Xiao Xue doesn’t have a father, let alone a stepfather," the woman said.
Upon hearing this, Potato gasped in surprise, the world actually had children without fathers, that’s an eye-opener.
The woman felt helpless, feeling that talking to this little ghost was utterly incomprehensible.
But she had also been startled by the sudden intrusion.
However, Potato quickly caught on.
"The little sister has no father, and you’ve died, so the little sister can only be taken care of by her brother, right?" Potato said triumphantly.
The woman nodded and then shook her head.
"He’s not Xiao Xue’s brother," the woman said.
Potato scratched his head, feeling rather complicated.
