Chapter 113: [112] Courts and Prevention
Ren blinked slowly as the warm broth slid down his throat. He raised both hands, feeling the smooth, unblemished skin where scorched flesh once was. "What happened?" he asked softly, a hint of confusion in his voice.
Silence hung in the air. Khan, Nea, Derek, Denon, and the rest of the Band of Massiah stared at him in disbelief—still processing what had transpired.
"What do you mean?" Khan finally said, voice quiet, still trembling with relief. Ren’s condition should have sparked panic, not calm.
Ren swallowed, then placed his bowl down gently. He looked at his right hand—fingers once burnt to a crisp now healed, flawless.
"You... you were burned so badly the healers gave up," Nea said, stepping closer, eyes wide with wonder and fear. "Even magic couldn’t reach you... your body rejected it."
Ren met her gaze. "Yeah..." he replied tersely, uncertainty lacing his tone. He rubbed his lips before continuing.
Khan’s voice came again, low and emotional, "And magic... was completely ineffective."
They all waited for Ren to explain. His recovery was miraculous, unexplained.
"So... is it something... extraordinary?" Nea finally asked, tears threatening her composure.
Ren looked at the ceiling, then back to each of them, hesitating. "No... really, I’m fine." He offered a gentle smile meant to reassure.
Khan exhaled slowly, shoulders releasing tension. "Alright." But his eyes still bore the weight of last night’s unknown.
Nea moved her chair closer, guarding Ren cautiously. Derek glanced out the window, relief softening his shoulders. Denon gripped his collar, ready, just in case.
The Band exchanged looks that blended hope and uncertainty—afraid this miracle wasn’t yet fully understood.
Ren took a deeper breath and finished his soup. So who was that alien cosplay figure? What did they mean, "understand your power"? he thought. I already know it’s material transmutation... or am I missing something?
---
Later, Ren strode down the halls of the golden Samsara palace. His legs felt strong again after the miraculous healing. Everyone paused to stare in awe—as if witnessing a hero returned from the brink of death.
The chief physician stood at the corridor’s entrance, disbelief in his eyes. "I never expected you’d truly rise again, young man," he murmured to a passing guard.
Khan walked beside him. They were heading toward the grand courtroom to decide Malik’s fate.
"Is Malik’s trial today?" Ren asked, turning to Khan.
"Yeah," Khan replied confidently. "I’ve considered it, and the remaining nobility agree: his crimes must be revealed to the people."
"This trial is about justice, not revenge," Khan continued. "Transparency is critical to prevent chaos."
Ren nodded, glancing at the mosaic portraits of past sultans lining the wall. "I didn’t see your mother there earlier—how is she?"
Khan paused, eyes downcast. "After Malik was deposed, she stepped in... restoring order and governance."
Ren cocked his head, his wolf-like ears twitching beneath his scarf. "Do you plan to fulfill her dreams and become the next sultan?"
Khan offered a bitter smile. "Actually, it wasn’t her ambition originally. I once dreamt of being sultan—restoring Samsara’s glory." He sighed. "But I walked away then, not ready for who I was—half-beastman."
Ren’s expression softened. "Do you still try to run from your fate?"
"Not anymore," Khan responded firmly. "No heir remains but me and Malik." He squared his shoulders. "With Malik disqualified, I will step forward."
Ren squeezed Khan’s shoulder encouragingly. "You’ll face many challenges, especially as the leader of mostly humans."
Khan’s eyes gleamed with resolve. "I understand, and I’m ready."
They continued down the corridor. Before them, the courtroom doors glowed, ornate gold reflecting the warm light.
Ren glanced over. "Best of luck."
Khan—Farid—smiled and tapped Ren’s back. Together, they walked into the courtroom, ready to confront the next Chapter of Samsara’s future.
---
A hush fell over the courtroom as the judge began reading out Malik’s list of crimes. His voice carried off the rafters, the words bearing down on everyone present. Malik stood powerless, his face tense yet composed—accepting every accusation.
Nobles and citizens alike listened intently. Then came the verdict: Banishment. Exile without mercy.
High atop nearby rooftops, a shadowy figure crouched behind tiles, holding a blowgun loaded with mysterious toxins. As the judge’s gavel fell, the figure drew a slow breath, raised the weapon, and released an arrow that flew straight toward Malik’s neck.
"Tch..." Malik hissed, feeling the sharp sting of the shaft. He reflexively gripped it—but when he looked up toward the rooftops, the shooter had vanished.
Seconds later, tension gripped the room. Malik’s head dropped, then he began to swell—his body inflating unnaturally, ballooning as though he’d been filled with air.
He screamed in panic, echoing through the hall as fear rippled among the onlookers who didn’t know what was happening. The ground erupted beneath his feet; malik’s flesh-puppet form was grotesque and swollen, his face flushed red, his eyes glazed in repeated terror.
Roof tiles cracked—an omen none had anticipated.
Khan and Ren burst into the room. Their eyes immediately locked on Malik’s grotesque transformation.
"Oh man, this is exactly like my nightmare," Malik gasped, his voice heavy and trembling—sending a chill down everyone’s spine.
"Hey, this is bad—real bad," Ren said urgently, his voice tight with alarm as he darted between Malik and Khan.
"I know..." Khan answered, stepping forward carefully, his heart pounding with dread.
Ren dove for his pocket. "Damn—I wish I had your phone. I could call Mark I," he muttered, panic edged with hope.
Khan raised his left hand, staring at the golden bracelet encircling his wrist. "No—wait... I haven’t used its power yet," he said firmly, drawing a deep breath.
"That... that bracelet," Ren interrupted, eyes fixed on Khan’s wrist, a mix of hope and fear in his voice, "It’s your stone?"
"Yeah." Khan nodded, his gaze sharp. "I’ve heard it triggered chaos before—Ecs even hunted it down. I believed its power could stop this."
Ren edged closer, wary. "So... what now, Khan?"
Khan held both hands before him, channeling magical energy from the Pharaoh Mezes rune embedded in the bracelet. The slate floor quaked violently; cracks snaked across the courtroom in a deep rumble, as if nature itself rebelled in response to the unleashed magic.
Ren’s eyes widened. "Dude—don’t tell me you just summoned that giant worm?" he said, voice fraught with dread—sensing that Khan’s power had called forth the dreaded Ruh’al-Turab.
Khan held his breath, heart hammering as the cracks spread underfoot. He realized with horror that he’d invoked something far more primal than anticipated. Regret flickered, quickly overtaken by panic.
The shaking intensified. Cold seeped through the air. Walls groaned. People fled, desperately scrambling for the exits to escape the looming collapse.
Ren grabbed Khan’s arm, pulling him toward the door. Dust and debris tumbled all around them. "We will die in here if we don’t move!" Ren insisted sharply, eyes scanning for more fissures.
Khan’s voice followed him, urgent: "Wait—"
"No time," Ren replied, dragging him through the chaos.
Meanwhile, Malik’s swollen corpse-like form continued ballooning, pressing against the ceiling. Great shards of glass from windows shattered and flew outward as he breached the roof.
Courtyard watchers froze upon seeing the monstrous transformation—skin rotting, flesh twisting, as though a living statue fell into decay. With each gasp, the scene grew more horrific.
Then came the strangest moment: Malik... exploded. Bits of flesh rained through broken windows into the sunlit day.
The whole foundation shuddered—something monumental had broken in the earth below. The tremor rippled outward, shaking palace grounds.
And then, a sight both terrifying and surreal—a gargantuan worm erupted from the cracked floor: the Ruh’al-Turab. Its jaws opened wide, devouring chunks of Malik’s expanding body in brutal, silent bites.
No roaring, no fury—just the primal act of feeding, a beast devouring a fallen creature.
In moments, it finished consuming Malik and slipped back into the earth, leaving stunned silence in its wake. The courtroom erupted in screams and inertia as an unimaginable creature faded into the dirt.
The courtroom emptied in panic. Khan, still gripping Ren’s arm, looked back at the gaping crack—the ruptured ground where Malik had once stood.
Ren was pale, breathing hard. "That... was beyond everything," he said softly, voice trembling.
Khan remained silent, guilt and fear etched in his eyes.
Above, the sky was dense with dust and unease. What had been intended as justice became a catalyst for something far more terrible... and powerful than any of them had imagined.
"Hey, are you okay?" Ren’s voice sounded faint over the din of the wreckage. He turned to Khan, who stood frozen in the rubble, like a statue that had forgotten how to breathe.
It took Khan a few seconds to answer. His face was blank, but his eyes held a thousand emotions that had yet to find words. "Yeah... I’m fine," he said, but his voice sounded like someone who was not okay.
Blood was still rushing in his ears. In his heart, the scene of Malik being eaten alive by the creature he had summoned... kept playing like a nightmare. He didn’t know if this emptiness was due to the loss, or the fact that he had made a decision he could not take back.
Ren stared at him for a moment longer, then nodded slowly. He didn’t ask any more questions. Some wounds healed better in silence, and he was old enough to understand that Khan was coming to terms with his own choices.
"Yeah," Khan repeated his answer with a heavy breath, as if to reassure not just Ren... but himself. "I’m fine," he said, but deep down, he knew his new world had just changed. And so had he.
