Chapter 10: Li Yuanba – “That Person… Have We Met Before?”

In Hui Province, the Yellow-Browed Demon King plummeted like a meteor, and a stunned silence gripped the battlefield. Shu Mountain disciples gaped at the figure wielding twin hammers in the sky.

One strike! Li Yuanba had vanquished a Demon King with a single blow. To the disciples, this was unthinkable—Xu Changqing, their senior brother, had fallen to the same foe. Li Yuanba’s power surpassed all of Shu Mountain’s disciples combined.

Li Tai, gazing at the domineering silhouette, felt a pang of longing. If only this uncle backed him, the throne would surely be his. In Shu Mountain’s Wuji Hall, Sect Leader Qingwei, observing through a mystic mirror, sighed with regret. “If only back then…” Years ago, he’d passed on taking Li Yuanba as a disciple due to his imperial ties. Had he persisted, things might have been different.

In Nanzhao, the Moon-Worshipping Sect Leader, who had recently clashed with the Yellow-Browed Demon King and barely escaped, gasped. To see the fearsome Demon King felled by Li Yuanba’s single strike left him reeling.

In the Mysterious Mechanism Pavilion, Li Shimin and his court erupted in smiles as the Demon King fell and the array crumbled. “The Prince of Yidu, righteous and valiant, is our Great Tang’s pillar dragon general!” Li Shimin declared, his praise twofold: the Demon King’s defeat and Li Yuanba’s action.

Once inseparable, Li Shimin and Li Yuanba had drifted apart after the latter’s recovery. The old Li Yuanba was brash, fearless even before the tyrant Yang Guang. But after emerging from the Prince of Qin’s mansion, he became reclusive, shunning court politics and princely rivalries. His intervention now stirred Li Shimin’s heart. “Tai visited Yidu before… could Yuanba have acted for him?”

In Hui Province, Li Yuanba’s hammer seemed to seal the demons’ defeat. The human forces, especially Shu Mountain, rejoiced. Slaying a lord of the Six Realms was a tale to boast about for a lifetime. Yet, amidst the jubilation, Li Yuanba alone frowned, staring at the fallen Demon King.

He’d sensed it—the Demon King had held back at the critical moment, enabling his devastating strike. Why? Was someone aiding him from the shadows? Li Yuanba was puzzled, unable to fathom the reason. Then, the Tenfold Demonic Calamity Array shuddered. Though damaged, seven-tenths remained, and now a blinding beam of dark light shot skyward. The heavens grew heavier, clouds like molten tar, poised to drip.

The crowd’s relief turned to dread. What is happening? Has the array survived? A sharp-eyed Shu Mountain disciple cried, “Someone’s repairing the array!” The revelation sparked panic. Distant leaders felt their hearts leap to their throats. As if confirming the disciple’s words, ripples spread across the blackened sky, and a pale, jade-like hand emerged from a rift. Its fingers danced, manipulating the array like a puppeteer. The Tenfold Demonic Calamity Array began to mend at a visible pace.

“It’s restoring!”

“Is that the Demon Emperor’s hand?”

“Stop it, now!”

Hearts raced at the unexpected twist. Shu Mountain disciples charged toward the array, swords raised. But before they could approach, a cataclysmic pressure descended. Boom! The hand’s aura swept them away like leaves in a storm. Silence fell. The sheer power of that hand left all in awe. Li Tai, gripping his sword, barely withstood the pressure from a distance. Had he been closer, his fate would’ve been no better. If Li Tai struggled, others had no chance. The hand’s strike shattered the human offensive effortlessly.

At Shu Mountain, the Five Elders watched, drenched in cold sweat. Elder Canggu exclaimed, “This isn’t the Heavenly Demon Emperor’s power!” Elder Jingming’s eyelids twitched. “It’s far more tyrannical—our might pales before it…” As paragons of the cultivation world, their words underscored the hand’s terrifying strength. Sect Leader Qingwei clutched his chest, staring at the hand. “Why does this power feel… familiar?”

“Familiar?” The elders focused, sensing a vague recognition but unable to place it in the heat of the moment. Qingwei’s face hardened. “No time to ponder. We head to Hui Province now! They can’t withstand this force!” The elders nodded—more disciples would only mean more deaths.

In the Mysterious Mechanism Pavilion, Li Shimin and the eight Star Ministers gaped at the hand. “It’s him!” Du Ruhui, the Star of Left Assistance, blurted out. They didn’t know who “he” was, but this hand matched the one seen in the star chart—an overwhelming force far beyond them.

Li Shimin acted swiftly. “Yuan Tiangang, use the Soul Sound Tower to warn the Star of Water Virtue—no rash moves! Summon Li Jing and Yuchi Jingde to Hui Province immediately!” The tower’s transmission was costly, but Li Shimin couldn’t risk Li Tai and his fifty thousand troops provoking that hand’s wrath.

Back in Hui Province, the hand’s appearance saw the array nearly fully restored, rendering prior efforts futile. The shocking reversal left all numb with dread. Yet, one man remained unruffled.

“What’s happening?” Li Yuanba muttered, sensing a shift within. When the hand’s pressure swept through, it seemed to bypass him, as if he were exempt. Stranger still, his long-dormant Dou Wood Xie Constellation stirred, a sudden clarity washing over him, like an epiphany. It felt less like an attack and more like guidance. And from that hand, Li Yuanba detected… familiarity?
