Chapter 12: SysDi 12: Seeking the All-Seeing
The next morning, Evan woke up early. He got up to see that his parents were both out earlier than usual.
Evan had been hoping that he would be able to eat breakfast with either of them but he couldn’t do anything if they had prior plans, or were just really busy.
He ate breakfast and went out to check the field. The field is watered, something Erwin never seemed to forget.
So, like the past few days, Evan went to the forest to grab some berries. He didn’t need any use of the Simulation Zone anymore, since he can already tell which ones were the best quality.
Normally, he would’ve been done by now. But he heard some rustling in a distance that made him pause.
He looked at the direction where he had heard it, furrowing his eyebrows in thought.
There’s a big chance that it would just be a rabbit, but he could go and still double-check if that’s the case. He stood up making sure that he is making slower movements as he continued a little deeper to the forest than what he had ventured before with Erwin.
’Up ahead.’ Iva says, a little gasp echoing inside Evan’s head. ’Can you feel it too? Something’s up ahead.’
’What is it?’ Evan asked mentally to prevent himself from making unnecessary sounds.
’Just past the big tree at the left.’ Iva continues to say, ignoring what he was saying. ’There’s something big and heavy, it seems like. It’s still and unmoving.’
Evan tries to remember if there was something in this forest that his dad would have told him about.
All he could remember was that Erwin told him about some huge rocks that was almost a small hill. There really wasn’t anything around it, no holes, no opening. Nothing. They were just some rocks.
Evan kept his guard up. Sure, he is aware that this small forest isn’t exactly the one that had dangerous wild animals in it, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.
If anything, the almost encounter with those five adult men trying to find a child for their ransom made Evan a lot more cautious.
’There’s just a bunch of rocks there, Iva. You sure?’ Evan asked, slowly approaching the direction it told him to.
As soon as he stepped foot past the big tree, Evan felt a cold shiver go down his spine. He didn’t know where it came from, but it felt as if he is being watched by many eyes from every direction.
It made him freeze for a moment, before continuing to step forwards, still making his way slowly and being careful, while trying his best to ignore the feeling of being looked at.
Evan saw the big stone hill that Erwin had described to him then. It is a stone hill that is at least three times a typical 7-year-old child’s current height. It has some other smaller, rock formations at the side, just small stone hills but nothing as big as the main one.
He looked at the stones at the side, inspecting them closer. Seeing that nothing is of interest, Evan made his way towards the stone hill.
At the corner of his eye, just by his right, he saw something written in the side of it, covered by something brown. Mud maybe? He’s not sure. He raised a hand and wiped away the mud, the dirty surface giving way to less rougher and more smoother stone underneath.
There were words that Evan couldn’t read, but they felt familiar, as if he might’ve seen them before.
’Elements thrive through centuries’ time,
Artificial yield through winter’s chime.
Destinies forged in linear’s reign,
The end times forced the nature’s drain.’
Iva’s voice was louder, as if it wasn’t speaking from Evan’s head anymore, but around him- surrounding him. The air swirls around, too strong to only be a breeze.
Each word that Iva reads, Evan could see the words glow from the smooth stone. The words he couldn’t understand before, can now be understood. He realized that Iva is speaking a different language that he is now understanding.
’Passage through the ancient arcane,
Broke each person, all insane,
Hunters to a prey, jumping to the fray
Rewarded the Eyes to a seer, seeking the all-seeing.’
As Iva finished reading the passage, there is a small rumble from the ground. Evan had to place his hand on the nearest tree he can find so he won’t fall over.
Evan had no idea where the continuous rumbling was coming from, until he saw the stone hill have a split opening in the middle. The grinding of stone is louder and slower than he is expecting.
The wait is rewarded with a cave opening of sorts. Evan stared at it for a while, not knowing what to do.
"Okay, Iva, what was that?" Evan says, unable to just think about what to say at this point.
Iva hums. ’It’s an ancient language, one of those that the sapiens used to speak thousands of years ago.’
So that was why it was somehow familiar to Evan. His mom used to tell him stories about the nearly extinct race, the sapiens who couldn’t survive in the world now filled with mana. They were the main ancestors of all, even before the Daeglinns and the Oeglinns.
Evan made his way back, putting his hand against the smooth stone. The lighting on it has finally dimmed and disappeared, the text now understandable to him.
He looked up at the sky, noting that it is still very early. "Iva, let’s explore inside. You can remind me every thirty minutes from the inside, right?" Evan asked, as he looked at the entrance of the cave.
It looked dark, but the sunlight could still illuminate as far as it could go inside so Evan could see a little bit further.
’Yeah okay. I can do that.’ Iva sounded resigned.
Evan steps forward in front of the cave. He looked down. It is a long staircase down. He sighs before he started making his way down.
