Chapter 168: Chapter 168: A Mother’s Love Does Not Struggle
"You bunch of troublemaking villagers, what does this have to do with us? We’re just the damn lumber carriers! The tower was built by that idiot. If you want to beat anyone up, go find him. Beating us is just dumb!"
Sang Chuan, taking advantage of his height, shoved aside a villager whose head barely reached his chin.
"I could take on ten of you at once! Whoever’s got a death wish, come right here and face Grandpa!"
Sang Chuan pushed his tongue against the inside of his cheek, tugged his collar with his left hand, tilted his head, and made a throat-slitting gesture with his right hand.
[You really can’t let Sang Chuan get involved in fights. Just look at him—he’s way too excited.]
[But it doesn’t change the fact that he’s all bark and no bite. When he’s in front of Sang Ning, he turns from a dragon into a worm—completely crushed by his blood connection with his big sister.]
Sang Chuan’s provocations were like pouring gasoline on a fire, making several villagers grit their teeth in fury.
"First, drag this cocky little punk out and beat him up. Let’s see if he still dares to act all arrogant!"
At those words, a group of villagers swarmed Sang Chuan and started laying hands on him.
Song Shiye tried to pull him away but didn’t even manage to grab a piece of his clothing before Sang Chuan was dragged off.
"You bastards, fight me one-on-one if you’ve got the guts! Stop sneaking around like cowards!" Sang Chuan hadn’t expected that they wouldn’t even give him the chance to land a punch.
Seven or eight people immediately rushed him, pinned him down, immobilized his arms and legs, and dragged him out of the guest lineup.
[Tsk tsk tsk, turns out Sang Chuan’s just all talk. Didn’t he just say he could take on ten people? And now he doesn’t even have a shred of resistance.]
[No matter how "badass" Sang Chuan might seem, he’s still just a student. These villagers are hardened adults, the kind who regularly do manual labor like farming. Even if Sang Chuan’s the school bully, in their eyes, he’s just a kid.]
"Sis, my dear sister, where are you? Come save me!" Sang Chuan struggled desperately, but it was all in vain—he couldn’t free himself.
The male guests were surrounded and couldn’t help Sang Chuan. Hu Zhi wanted to intervene, but as soon as she took a step forward, someone stopped her: "We don’t hit women, so stay out of this."
Hu Zhi looked up at the man angrily and said, "That’s my son! Why shouldn’t I get involved?"
The man sneered, narrowing his eyes at her. "Even if he were your father, we’d still beat him up without hesitation!"
Unwilling to back down, Hu Zhi glared at him several times. Then she took a few steps back, lowered her head, and charged forward like a bull.
She intended to knock him over with her head, but only managed two steps before tripping over a protruding rock and tumbling to the ground.
The hilariously awkward fall sparked a wave of unrestrained laughter in the crowd.
"Ugh!" Hu Zhi scrambled to her feet, spat in their direction, and barked, "Fine! You love fighting so much? Go ahead! Heaven will take care of you for bullying my son!"
[Hu Zhi loves her son, but not excessively.]
[Hu Zhi’s maternal love for Sang Chuan is expressed in knowing when to let go.]
Pinned to the ground, Sang Chuan glanced at Hu Zhi before the punches started landing. He was nearly moved to tears.
But upon hearing her words, the tears immediately dried up. He rolled his eyes in exasperation.
Spreading his arms and legs into a limp "X" shape, he closed his eyes and shouted loudly, "Come on! Kill me! Hurry and beat to death this poor little nobody—the kid whose dad doesn’t care, mom doesn’t love, and sister ignores!"
Sang Chuan’s melodramatic outburst left the villagers confused. Is this kid mentally unstable? Should we hit him or not?
Slap—slap—
Slap—slap—
Sang Chuan felt light taps across his cheeks, left and right, like someone was scratching an itch—it had no weight behind it at all.
"What, did none of you eat today? Why aren’t you hitting harder?" Sang Chuan kept his eyes shut but couldn’t resist being a smartass.
Then he felt his ear being twisted, a familiar sensation waking a peculiar dread in him. He snapped his eyes open abruptly.
Seeing the face that usually struck terror but now felt strangely comforting, Sang Chuan couldn’t hold back his emotions. He wrapped his arms around Sang Ning with tears brimming in his eyes. "Sis, they bullied me! You’ve gotta stick up for me!"
"It’s okay, it’s all okay," Sang Ning softly patted his back, her tone unexpectedly gentle.
"Sis—" Sang Chuan, overwhelmed with grievance, buried his face in her shoulder and rubbed against her dependently, his voice clearly choked up.
"It’s fine. I just saw with my own eyes how you were carried out like a pig." Sang Ning pushed him off, stared into his eyes, and said earnestly, "Teenagers like you don’t grow up without enduring a few slaps."
???
Sang Chuan instantly froze, his emotional outburst grinding to a halt. Baffled, he stared at her blankly.
Before he could process what she’d said, Sang Ning stood up, glanced at the villagers around her, and said calmly, "Don’t hit him too hard. Just let him understand how harsh the world can be. Otherwise, this idiot might keep provoking bad guys in the future without the ability to protect himself."
!!!
Now, it wasn’t just Sang Chuan who was stunned—the villagers’ expressions turned equally complicated.
Who’s the bad guy here? And how dare she insult us so blatantly!
Sang Chuan furrowed his brows, sensing something was off. After a long "hmm," he raised his head and asked hesitantly, "Wait a second. Why aren’t you hitting my sister?"
Even Hu Zhi had been stopped when trying to rescue him. How did Sang Ning get through so easily?
"We distinguish between enemies and friends. This young lady saved Grandpa Chen, so we won’t make things difficult for her. But it’s a different story for you guys. You turned our once-every-few-years event into a complete mess. This debt must be settled!"
One villager declared sharply, and others chimed in agreement.
"Miss, this has nothing to do with you. If you’re smart, you’ll step aside. Otherwise, don’t blame us for dragging you into this!"
Someone threatened her, but Sang Ning didn’t even blink. Instead, she raised her arm vertically, flipped her hand, and held it out level.
"I nearly broke my hand saving Grandpa Chen. He’s the one appointed by heaven to handle rituals. By saving Grandpa Chen, I indirectly saved your heaven. If you dare touch me, aren’t you afraid heaven might punish you?"
She wasn’t planning to meet force with force. With so many villagers in Jiangkou Village, no matter how skilled she was, could she really fight off hundreds of people? Her best option was to reason with them first.
Sang Ning’s logic left the villagers dumbfounded, staring at each other in confusion.
After a brief silence, someone spat furiously, "We’ve already offended heaven today! What’s a second time?"
Suddenly, someone in the crowd pushed another person, who cried out as they fell to the ground. The situation spiraled out of control after that.
