Chapter 59: It’s A Secret
Xu Xiang closed her palm, smiled at the boy, and said, "I can’t answer your question until you answer my question."
Seeing that the two children did not speak, she said, "You answer me, and I will give you these candies. What do you think?"
Xu Xiang waited for a while, but still didn’t get their answer, so she opened the blue candy. As she unwrapped the candy wrappers, the scent of bubblegum wafted around them. The two children smelled it and were attracted by the fragrance.
Xu Xiang looked at their greedy little faces and asked again. "Where am I? What is this place?"
The girl was still pulling the boy’s sleeve, but the boy couldn’t help it anymore. He stepped forward and said, "Give me the candy, and I will tell you."
Xu Xiang stretched out her palm to the boy and said, "Take it."
The boy approached her cautiously, while the girl stomped her feet angrily. When he got close enough to her, he quickly grabbed the candies and ran back to the girl. He put the blue candy in his mouth and gave the pink one to the girl.
"This thing called candy is so delicious!" He exclaimed in surprise.
Seeing the surprised expression on the boy’s face, the girl hesitated and opened the wrapping paper of the pink candy. As soon as the wrapper is opened, the pink candy exudes a sweet strawberry fragrance. Both children were surprised when they smelled the fragrance.
With candy in his mouth, the boy’s cheeks puffed up as he said, "Taste it quickly. Your candy is more fragrant than mine."
Under the boy’s constant urging, the girl stuffed the pink candy into her mouth. As soon as the candy touched her tongue, the sweet and sour taste made the girl stunned.
Her eyes widened in surprise, and she said, "This is so delicious!"
Xu Xiang watched the two children compare their candy for a while, and then said, "Since you all ate my candy, shouldn’t you answer my question now?"
Hearing what Xu Xiang said just now, they looked at her, but the vigilance in their eyes had decreased a lot.
She watched them fidgeting and thought: ’As expected. Children really love sweets.’
After a short silence, the girl took a step forward and spoke with a big candy stuck on her cheek.
"Fine. My father always taught me to do everything fairly. Since you gave us two candies, we will answer your two questions." The little girl said in an indistinct voice.
Xu Xiang stood up and looked at the girl who looked no older than seven for a few seconds. She folded her arms and said, "Then tell me everything you know about this place and the people who live here."
After hearing Xu Xiang’s words, the girl shouted angrily: "You are cheating! This is not a fair question."
Xu Xiang chuckled softly when she saw the girl’s face flushed red from her anger. With a playful smile on her lips, Xu Xiang said, "How can you say that? I gave you two candies, but I only asked you one question."
Clenching her little hands tightly, the girl was silent for a while before saying, "Change the question. Be more specific with your question."
Xu Xiang raised her eyebrows, impressed by the girl’s careful nature. She touched her chin, thought for a while, and asked, "Who are you?"
Hearing this simple question, the girl secretly breathed a sigh of relief, and said, "My name is A Lai Na, the daughter of the chieftain of the Jia tribe. His name is A Lu Ge, and he is the son of the chieftain of the Xiuluo tribe."
Xu Xiang thought about the girl’s answer and said, "So there is more than one tribe here. Tell me about these tribes."
A Lai Na thought for a while and said, "This information is more valuable than your piece of candy. Give me more, and I will tell you."
Hearing A Lai Na’s request, Xu Xiang raised her eyebrows and smiled slightly. She looked around, found a boulder, went to it and sat down. Seeing her sitting down on the boulder, the two children looked at each other and then followed her.
After sitting down, Xu Xiang looked at A Lai Na and said, "Little girl, although you are young, you already know how to negotiate. Since you said that a piece of candy is too cheap to answer my question, how about I give you something else?"
Listening to Xu Xiang’s words, A Lai Na looked at her with great interest and asked, "What will you give me?"
The corner of Xu Xiang’s lips curled into a smile, and she took out a soft and warm meat bun from her thigh bag. The two children stared wide-eyed at the plump, soft bun that was still emitting steams. They looked at the big meat bun that was as big as their own face, and then at Xu Xiang’s small thigh bag.
Xu Xiang knew what they were thinking now and asked, "Are these meat buns enough for you to answer my question?"
Before A Lai Na nodded, A Lu Ge pointed to Xu Xiang’s thigh bag and asked, "How did this thing come out of that little bag? This thing is too big to fit into that bag."
Xu Xiang raised her hand, put her index finger on her lips, and smilingly said, "It’s a secret."
A Lai Na patted A Lu Ge on the shoulder, shook her head and said, "She won’t tell you."
Seeing the smile on the corner of Xu Xiang’s lips, A Lu Ge pouted his lips in disappointment. Seeing that her friend stopped talking, A Lai Na took the big meat bun from Xu Xiang. She touched the soft meat bun with great interest, and then split the meat bun.
She handed half a meat bun to A Lu Ge, and said, "Listen well. Our tribe has lived here since ancient times. There are six tribes living here. In the past, we had a tribe leader who came from six tribes. But five hundred years ago, the six tribes split up and became independent. That was the first time each tribe elects its own chieftain."
