Chapter 36: A Hunch

Xiao Shao looked at Xu Xiang silently, then looked up at the sky. Tilting his head and stare at the sky, he could see nothing but the bright sun and clear sky. There were only a few clouds there to provide some shade as it flew past the sun.

Turning his gaze back to her calm face, he asked, "Why are you in such a hurry today?"

Hearing his question, Xu Xiang glanced at him. She frowned slightly, and said, "I have a hunch that we have to leave this place before sunset."

Listening to her answer, Xiao Shao raised his eyebrows since it was rare to see her frowning. He pondered on her words for a while and nodded.

"Then we have to hurry. Give me the food and water bags, and I will give it to the Fan family. They will distribute it themselves, so you can give the rest of the food to my family." He took a few bags from her while talking.

She looked at him and asked, "What about you?"

"Mhm?" He looked at her confusedly because he didn’t quite understand her question.

Seeing that he was confused, she asked, "How about your food?"

"I will ride the mule cart with you." He answered her while walking towards the other members of the Fan family.

Xu Xiang looked at his back for a few seconds before walking towards the sleigh. Seeing more people sitting on the sleigh with the rest of the Xiao family, she walked towards Xiao Jing calmly.

Passing the dry food and the water bags to Xiao Jing, she said, "We will continue on our way after Young Master Xiao finishes distributing the food and water."

Xiao Jing nodded at her with water bags and a few packs of dry food in her hands. "Um. Thank you, Miss Xu, for the food and water."

"Then I will go back to the mule cart." Before leaving, she nodded to the others.

When she walked away, Eldest Madam Fan, who was sitting next to Wen Wan, asked, "Madam Xiao, is that young lady your servant? She looks quite young, but she has a calm personality. If Madam Xiao doesn’t mind, I would like to ask her from you. Her personality is very suitable to take care of my mother-in-law."

Hearing her words, everyone in the Xiao family was taken aback. Sitting in the driver’s seat, Xiao Han couldn’t help but take another look at Eldest Madam Fan. Xiao Yi, who was sitting by his side, saw his youngest son’s cold look and reminded him with a light cough.

"Ahem."

Seeing Xiao Han still glaring at Eldest Madam Fan coldly, Xiao Yi coughed again.

"Ahem!"

Xiao Han looked away from Eldest Madam Fan and glanced at his father. Catching Xiao Han’s attention, Xiao Yi lowered his voice and said, "Don’t scare others with your murderous eyes."

Xiao Han gave his father a look silently, as he waited for his elder brother’s signal. Sitting behind them were the women from the Fan family, Wen Wan and Xiao Jing. Wen Wan was surprised by Eldest Madam Fan’s words, but smiled at her politely a few seconds later.

She showed her first rank madam’s demeanor, and said, "I’m really sorry, I can’t meet Eldest Madam Fan’s request, since Miss Xu is not our servant. We rescued her before, and she kindly shared her food and water with us after that. Even this sleigh is hers."

As soon as her words fell, everyone present, except the members of the Xiao family, was shocked. After hearing Wen Wan’s words just now, they finally knew that the one who brought them food, water, and let them sit on the mule cart and the sleigh was the young lady who looked very ordinary like a servant. After Eldest Madam Fan knew the truth, she was very embarrassed.

She coughed lightly to cover up her embarrassment, and said, "A... ah... I’m really sorry. It’s all because of my poor eyesight."

Wen Wan looked at her awkward smile and embarrassed face, and didn’t want to embarrass her more. She smiled politely at Eldest Madam Fan, and said, "Miss Xu has very good craftsmanship in culinary. Even the simplest food she prepares is very delicious. Everyone, please enjoy it before it cools down."

Eldest Madam Fan knew that Wen Wan was helping her out of her embarrassment, so she quickly said, "What Madam Xiao’s said is right. I can tell that this dish is delicious just by smelling it."

As soon as her words fell, the embarrassing atmosphere slowly faded, and everyone present began to eat the flatbread. While they were eating and chatting, Xiao Shao was already sitting in the driver’s seat of the mule cart. Sitting next to him, Xu Xiang handed the bags of food and water to the members of the Fan family who were sitting on the cart behind them, and then lowered the cover between the driver’s seat and the cart.

Seeing that everyone was ready, Xiao Shao gestured to Xiao Han, and then they continued on their way with the addition of the Fan family. Xu Xiang shaded her eyes with her hand, squinted and looked around. After observing the surrounding environment for a few minutes, she breathed a sigh of relief and opened the paper package in her hand.

Hearing her sigh, Xiao Shao glanced at her but didn’t speak. Just as he was driving the mule cart in silence, Xu Xiang’s clear voice came from beside him.

"Unfortunately, we only have flatbread and some boiled eggs for lunch today. I prepared a lot for us, so you can eat as much as you want." She said with a bit of regret in her tone.

As she spoke, she handed a boiled egg to Xiao Shao. He looked at the big boiled egg and asked curiously, "What kind of egg is this? It’s bigger than ordinary chicken eggs."

Xu Xiang bit the boiled egg in her hand, chewed it a few times before saying, "This is a duck egg. I bought some in Bei Qiang City before. Fortunately, the eggs are still fresh after a few days."
