Chapter 178: Jin Huai’s Scheme
Listening to what Qi Baijun just said, Chen Yiwei’s heart sank. After a long silence, he said, "This disease came without warning. Did Physician Gu say what is the cause of this disease?"
Qi Baijun shook his head and said, "They haven’t found out the cause yet. We were caught off guard because the symptoms of this disease are similar to normal diarrhea."
"Based on our current situation, if Yao Zhen decides to attack us, then..." Chen Yiwei didn’t finish his sentence, because both of them knew what would happen to all of them if Yao Zhen really attacked them at this time.
After a long silence, Qi Baijun suddenly realized something, stood up and shouted angrily: "That damn old fox!"
Startled by his sudden angry shout, Chen Yiwei looked at Qi Baijun in confusion and asked, "What is wrong with you?"
"We fell for that old fox Jin Huai’s scheme." Qi Baijun said between gritted teeth as he walked out of the tent in a hurry.
Chen Yiwei saw Qi Baijun rushing out from there with a face full of anger, and hurriedly followed him. Seeing that he had gone far away, he called out to him. "Hey, Baijun! Where are you going?"
"The granary!" Qi Baijun shouted back toward Chen Yiwei without turning his head.
Standing outside the Commander’s tent, Chen Yiwei scratched his head in confusion.
’Why is he going to the granary now? Shouldn’t he go to the quarantine area instead?’
He thought about it for a while, but he still couldn’t understand Qi Baijun’s actions, so he shrugged.
’Forget it. If he wants to go to the granary, he can go as he likes. I should go to the quarantine area and check on the patients in his stead.’
Thinking like this he walked towards the quarantine area located outside the south gate of Lin Zi City. As for Qi Baijun, after leaving his tent, he rode his war horse to the granary in the north area of Lin Zi City.
When the two soldiers guarding the granary saw him approaching with a dark face, they quickly fell to their knees and said, "This subordinate sees Zheng Yi Wang."
Stepping into the granary, he asked, "Where did these rations come from?"
The two soldiers looked at each other secretly, not understanding the purpose of his question. One of them received a signal from his comrades and said, "Answering Zheng Yi Wang, these rations were the ones brought back from the barracks of the Shang Empire."
Clenching his hands, Qi Baijun asked again: "When did the kitchen use these rations? Why didn’t they use the rations we bought before?"
"Answering Zheng Yi Wang, the rations we bought earlier were burned by thieves last night. So the kitchen staff used these grains to prepare breakfast today." The other soldier replied as cold sweat dripped to the ground from his chin.
Hearing the soldier’s answer, Qi Baijun chuckled in anger. Gritting his teeth, he said slowly: "Those damn thieves and that old fox Jin Huai, I will definitely make them pay for this!"
After saying this, he left the granary full of anger. The two soldiers knelt on the ground until his footsteps could no longer be heard. After waiting for another minute, they sat weakly on the ground in horror.
Wiping the cold sweat off his face, one of them looked at his comrade and asked, "What do you think is the purpose of Zheng Yi Wang coming here?"
His comrade shook his head and said, "If you want to live longer, you should ask less. Small shrimp like us just need to do our job well. The less we know, the longer we can live."
Hearing what his comrades said, the soldier nodded like a chicken pecking at rice. The two looked at each other for a few seconds in silence, before standing up from the ground weakly and walking out of the granary. With their legs still trembling from the fright, they guarded the granary seriously.
After leaving the granary, Qi Baijun went to look for Gu Wei. He rode out from the south gate of Lin Zi City and came to the emergency infirmary. When passing the quarantine area, he saw Chen Yiwei.
He approached Chen Yiwei, jumped down from his war horse and asked, "Yiwei, what are you doing here?"
Hearing someone calling him, Chen Yiwei raised his head and saw Qi Baijun walking over while leading his horse. Looking at Qi Baijun, he asked, "Why are you here? Didn’t you go to the granary?"
Instead of answering him, he looked at his best friend and said, "I’m asking you first."
Rolling his eyes at Qi Baijun, Chen Yiwei said, "Since you are busy, I came to check on the soldiers’ conditions."
Qi Baijun looked at the bowl in his hand and asked, "What is that?"
Showing the black liquid inside the bowl to him, Chen Yiwei said, "This is the new concoction made by Physician Gu. We just got this concoction and want to test to see if this medicine is effective or not."
Qi Baijun nodded after hearing his answer, and asked, "Where is Gu Wei?"
Chen Yiwei pointed to a tent in the quarantine area and said, "He treats the patient inside a tent."
After answering his question, he noticed that Qi Baijun fell into silence. He looked at him and asked, "Is there anything important that you want to tell Physician Gu directly?"
Qi Baijun thought for a while, then shook his head and said, "No. Just tell him to check the grain as soon as possible. Also, tell the kitchen staff to buy new grains and don’t use the ones in the granary."
Chen Yiwei pondered on his words for a few seconds, suddenly realized something, and asked, "Could it be that the cause of this disease is the food?"
Qi Baijun nodded, gritted his teeth and said, "To be precise, the cause was those rations we stole from Yao Zhen."
