Chapter 254: Burden

As Alexander had predicted, William arrived early in the morning.

"What happened to you? Did you cry all night?" Father Rock asked as William joined them for breakfast.

"I did," William replied bluntly. "And it’s because of you, Dad! How could you not tell me and Alexander about your brain tumor?"

Rain swallowed hard, caught off guard by William’s directness. She knew he was straightforward, but hearing him blurt it out like that still shocked her. In that moment, William approached Father Rock and hugged him tightly, tears streaming down his face.

"How could you bear this all alone? You have two sons who care about you, and yet you wanted Uncle Ben to shoulder everything!" William’s voice was choked with sobs.

Father Rock glanced at Alexander, and it was then that Rain noticed her husband’s tears falling silently down his cheeks.

"This..." Aunt Melanie gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Rain quickly signaled for Uncle Ben to take Aunt Melanie away for now, wanting to give them all a moment to process their emotions.

Father Rock was so speechless, caught off-guard by the sight of his sons crying.

"William..." he started, his voice trembling. "I didn’t want you to worry. I thought I could handle it alone-"

"Handle it alone?" William interrupted, pulling back to look his father in the eyes, his own filled with hurt. "You think we wouldn’t worry? You think we wouldn’t want to be there for you? Dad, we’re your sons! You don’t have to face this by yourself!"

As William spoke, Alexander stood up, his chair scraping against the floor, amplifying the tension in the room. "It’s not just about you, Dad. We’re here for you. We’ve always been."

Rock looked between his two sons, their faces contorted with emotion, and a wave of guilt washed over him. He had always prided himself on being strong, on being the pillar of support for his family. But now, seeing his boys so vulnerable, he felt the cracks in that facade deepen.

"I thought I was protecting you," he said softly, his voice breaking. "I didn’t want to burden you with my problems. I thought... I thought if I could just carry this weight myself, you would be safe from it."

"Safe from what?" Alexander’s voice was firm, but laced with sorrow. "From watching you suffer in silence? From feeling like we’re losing you? You’ve always taught us to face our challenges together. Why wouldn’t you let us do that for you?"

Rock’s heart ached as he absorbed their words, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. He had underestimated their capacity to share in his pain, to support him. He had thought he was being brave, but now he saw that true bravery lay in vulnerability, in allowing others to help carry the load.

"I’m so sorry," he whispered, tears streaming down his cheeks as he reached out to both of them, pulling them into a tight embrace. "I never wanted to push you away. I just thought I could protect you."

William and Alexander clung to their father, the three of them enveloped in a cocoon of shared grief and love. Rain watched, her heart breaking for the scene unfolding before her. She didn’t even notice how her own tears were already running down her cheeks.

"I witnessed your mother in pain..." he choked out, his voice trembling with emotion. "I... I can’t bear the thought of you two experiencing the same anguish I felt. The gut-wrenching agony of knowing I could lose Alexa at any moment, just waiting for death to take her away from me while I stood there, utterly helpless, unable to do a damn thing..."

Tears streamed down his face, his sobs echoing the depths of his despair. The weight of those memories crushed him.

"Every second felt like a lifetime, watching her suffer and knowing I couldn’t stop it," he continued, his voice cracking under the strain. "The fear, the desperation... it was suffocating. I never wanted either of you to know that kind of pain. I couldn’t bear it if you had to endure the same heartache I did."

"William and I will still face that pain, Father, no matter what," Alexander said, his voice steady but laced with emotion. "Do you think it would be easier for us to bear that pain after you’re gone? To live with the regrets of not being there for you enough when we had the chance? Not showing you just how much we care and love you?"

Rock’s gaze dropped, the weight of Alexander’s words hitting him like a physical blow. "I’m sorry, Son... I truly am... I was wrong to think I could shield you from this," he admitted, his voice breaking.

"You’re not protecting us by hiding it from us," William added, his tone softer now, yet resolute. "We want to be here for you, to share this burden together. We’re stronger as a family, remember?"

Tears streamed down Rock’s cheeks as he looked between his sons, the realization of his mistakes crashing over him like a wave. Alexander stepped forward. "You’re not just our dad; you’re our rock. We can face this together, but you have to trust us enough to share the burden."

Rock swallowed hard, struggling to find the right words as a fresh wave of guilt washed over him. "I thought I was being strong... But all I’ve done is show you weakness."

"No, Dad," Alexander interjected, stepping closer, his voice gentle. "It takes strength to be vulnerable, to admit you need help. That’s what makes us a family. We’re here to support each other through the hard times, just as we celebrate the good ones."

Rock’s heart twisted painfully in his chest. He could feel the love radiating from his sons, their willingness to shoulder the burden together. In that moment, he realized the true meaning of strength wasn’t in facing struggles alone but in leaning on those you love.

"I’ll try," he promised, his voice thick with emotion. "I will not face this alone anymore. I want to fight this battle together."

Rain wiped her tears away, her lips stretching into a warm smile as she watched the emotional exchange between Father Rock and his sons. She could see that her husband’s burden had been lifted, and somehow, Rain felt a wave of relief wash over her.
