Chapter 908: Chapter 794: Gathering a Crowd to Build a Bridge_2
Dean Liu now dared not do anything else and personally came to handle the matter. Several academicians, along with some elderly cadres, gathering to build a bridge, whatever the case, it was a big event.
No matter how Dean Liu and Commissioner Qiao tried to persuade them, these elders remained stubborn, insisting that surgery be arranged as quickly as possible. Some even confidently claimed they were experiencing chest pains day and night, at high risk of sudden death, arguing that if the surgery wasn’t performed promptly, there could be life-threatening hazards at any moment.
Others said their conditions were severe, with high surgical difficulties and poor physical states, so only minimally invasive surgery would do, which meant they could only trouble Professor Yang.
In such situations, Dean Liu had no choice but to ask Yang Ping to stay and slowly perform the surgeries with precision.
Thus, the eleven surgeries were scheduled over two days by Director Dai, and Yang Ping had no option but to stay. However, five or six surgeries a day were quite easy for Yang Ping, given his speed.
Having completed his mission in Beijing, Yang Ping also called Xiao Su and told him everything was fine and that he would return in three more days.
He called Song Zimo as well, inquiring about the department’s situation. Song Zimo said that Dr. Liao Ruicheng from Massachusetts Institute of Technology had been visiting Nandu Medical University for a few days and had been eager to meet Yang Ping.
Dr. Liao Ruicheng, a distinguished alumnus of Nandu Medical University, was now the director of a key stem cell research project in the United States and an academician of the American Academy of Sciences. Yang Ping was aware of him.
In two days, Yang Ping completed the eleven surgeries, all through thoracoscopic minimally invasive procedures, addressing the "heart concerns" of the old academicians and cadres.
The few old academicians and cadres could not stop praising Yang Ping, all asking Dean Liu when he would bring Yang Ping on board. Dean Liu now had another headache, guessing he would have to take a detour when encountering these heavyweights in the future.
Now, the academicians were uniting to nominate Yang Ping for an academician role, believing it a pity if such medical achievements were not recognized with such an honor.
On the third day, after Yang Ping finished his rounds, Elder Academician Meng had recovered remarkably well from surgery, already getting out of bed and moving freely.
The other eleven surgeries performed on the veteran experts and cadres were also recovering very well, which allowed Yang Ping to fly back to Nandu with peace of mind.

Returning to Sanbo Hospital, Yang Ping hurried to work early the next morning.
Song Zimo said, "Dr. Liao Ruicheng from Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been visiting Nandu Medical University these past few days and has requested to meet you. However, you were not at the hospital, and Dr. Liao has been waiting. Nandu Medical University instructed us to inform them immediately upon your return; Dr. Liao seems determined to see you."
"Let’s meet then, when?" Yang Ping felt that since it was a guest from Nandu Medical University, there was no harm in meeting.
Song Zimo smiled, "They have already arrived at Sanbo Hospital and are currently at the Department of Science and Education. They should be here at the department shortly."
"That quick?" Yang Ping expressed, surprised.
Song Zimo said, "I relayed the news of your return to Director Zhou yesterday, and he probably notified them right then. Dr. Liao, eager as ever, came early this morning. In the past few days, Dr. Liao made several trips here looking to visit the Stem Cell Laboratory. Zhang Lin refused, which really infuriated Director Zhou. Zhang Lin’s position was—’Without Professor Yang’s return, the laboratory will not accept any visitor!’"
Yang Ping nodded, "That’s correct, the Stem Cell Laboratory is currently at a crucial stage of experimentation, some information needs to remain confidential and should not be made public, so any visitation was refused. This was my directive before leaving, and without my return, no outsiders were to be given access."
Zhang Lin was not only responsible for the department’s clinical practice management but also for overseeing lab visitation and learning. Yang Ping approved of Zhang Lin’s actions.
Some things are simply a matter of principle, where personal feelings and face don’t apply.
Indeed, just after finishing his handover, Yang Ping received a call. It was Director Zhou on the phone, briefly mentioning Dr. Liao’s visit. Yang Ping responded that he was already in his department and ready to meet at any time.
Yang Ping asked Xu Zhiliang to lead the doctors to conduct surgery, while Song Zimo and Zhang Lin stayed to accompany him as they awaited the visitors.
About ten to twenty minutes later, Dr. Liao arrived at the Comprehensive Surgery Department’s office, accompanied by Dean Xia, Dean Sun, Director Zhou, and a vice chancellor from Nandu Medical University.
For others, an academician from the American Academy of Sciences was an important figure, but for Yang Ping, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. A meeting was merely a formality, after all, since the visitor was a guest of Nandu Medical University and also an alumnus.
"Professor Yang, it is an honor to meet you—"
Dr. Liao, dressed in a shirt, tie, and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, looked refined and elegant.
Yang Ping shook hands with Dr. Liao, "Hello, it is an honor to meet you. Please have a seat!"
"I have read your articles in the United States, Professor Yang. They are truly remarkable. The world of medicine has not seen anything this exciting for a long time. Professor Yang is a shining light among our compatriots!"
Dr. Liao perhaps spoke English regularly and thus spoke Chinese a bit less fluently.
"You flatter me, Dr. Liao, I simply got carried away and published a few articles," Yang Ping demurred with a wave of his hand.
"Having finally met you today, Professor Yang, I must say I did not expect that you were a surgeon. I always thought you must be an expert in basic medical science or biology."
"That is why I consider it just a hobby."
"No, no, no, in front of Professor Yang, we are the amateurs."
In the Comprehensive Surgery Department’s doctor’s office, everyone sat down and chatted amicably. Dr. Liao was not familiar with Sanbo Hospital, but he knew Nandu Medical University very well, having graduated from there.
"We at Stanford have also been conducting some research work in the stem cell field, although not as groundbreaking as Professor Yang’s achievements. We do have some cutting-edge technologies. If Professor Yang is interested, we could explore collaboration. Although I have left my homeland and have been working in the United States, I have always wanted to do something for my alma mater," Dr. Liao said with emotion.
Dr. Liao was now the director of the Stem Cell Institute at Stanford, and he was keen to establish a collaboration with Nandu Medical University.
"I am very grateful to Dr. Liao. Our Stem Cell Laboratory has just been established. Both our team and research results are still very weak, and our research topics are quite limited. We are not yet ready to work with top international laboratories, but we will certainly have opportunities in the future," Yang Ping replied diplomatically.
In terms of scientific research, Yang Ping’s principle was—maintain independence and self-reliance.
Therefore, any external collaboration had to be selected very carefully, prioritizing his own interests and finding partners that were complementary. In simple terms, the other party must possess the resources and technology that he wanted. The so-called collaboration was an exchange of resources and technology.
Now, in the field of stem cells, Yang Ping was arguably ahead of the curve. He was well aware of the progress being made in other laboratories around the world, and he felt no immediate need to collaborate.
Moreover, it was a critical moment for his experiments, and many aspects were not suitable for disclosure. Collaborating now risked leaking secrets.
Yang Ping was blunt in this regard; the so-called noble spirit of sharing was nonsense to him. Either there was a value exchange, or the matter was genuinely trivial and occasionally shared by others to seem noble.
If his findings were to be prematurely leaked and someone else filed patents on them, it could lead to them charging him patent fees and limiting his own development, which would be troublesome.
This kind of situation was all too common in the world.
So, it’s fine to be noble at times, but before you do so, you need to firmly hold the initiative in your own hands.
Dr. Liao did not expect to be turned down so tactfully by Yang Ping.
"Professor Yang is being modest. But this is a virtue of ours as Easterners, which I greatly admire. Your laboratory is already world-class, Professor Yang. I wonder if it would be possible for me to visit and learn from it?"
Dr. Liao’s purpose for this visit was twofold: to establish contact with Yang Ping in the hope of forging some sort of collaboration, and to tour Yang Ping’s laboratory with the hope of gaining some valuable information.
"Dr. Zhang must have already told you, our laboratory currently has some issues and is undergoing rectification. It is not convenient for visitors." Yang Ping declined once again with tact.
When Yang Ping was working on skin expansion technology, he did not consider it significant, so it was no problem for anyone to come and visit.
However, the experiments being done in the laboratory now were different and crucial steps that were absolutely confidential, and hence not open for visitation. Of course, even if a visit occurred, not much could be discerned, but still, it was better to be cautious.
