Chapter 752: Chapter 671: Young People’s Excitement Threshold is Too High

In the ward, Mr. Xu Jiujang was lying on the bed in a semi-reclined position, a position that helped to relieve the burden on his heart.

If it weren’t for the intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation device assisting his left ventricle, attempting to assume this half-reclining position would have been extremely strenuous for him.

Dr. Yang Ping meticulously questioned Mr. Xu about his medical history, performed a thorough physical examination, and completed auscultation of various areas of his heart.

If it weren’t for the heart ultrasound and chest X-ray, no one would know that his heart was doubled in size, or that both sides of his lungs were being compressed by the enlarged heart, severely affecting his respiratory function.

This man in his forties understood that his life was nearing its end. Originally, he intended to forgo treatment to avoid placing any financial burden on his family. However, with his child still in high school, he felt a duty to continue living.

In his own words, he felt a responsibility to see his child grow into an adult, and failing to do so would mean he hadn’t fulfilled his life’s mission.

For this reason, Mr. Xu sought out Professor Yao and requested a few extra years to see his child graduate from university.

Given Mr. Xu’s state, Professor Yao saw no other option besides a heart transplant. However, the transplant was urgent, and there wasn’t much time to wait.

Organ donors for heart transplants are already scarce, and it would be even harder to find a donor of the same blood type for a patient like Mr. Xu, who was in dire need of a transplant.

Currently, a twenty-year-old guy in the ICU of Nandu Affiliated Hospital One had been declared brain-dead. His family was, however, still having difficulty accepting the situation and hoped for some prolonged efforts at resuscitation. According to the young man’s wishes prior to his passing, his organs would be donated once his family came to terms with the reality. Again, if that were to happen, there was a possibility that Mr. Xu could receive the heart needed for his transplant.

Unfortunately, Mr. Xu had type B blood, while the young man had type A.

If a transplant were to be performed, they would only be able to do a cross-blood type transplant.

However, though Professor Yao admitted to this kind of cross-blood type heart transplant, he hadn’t performed any previously. The only similar procedures he had conducted were cross-blood transplant operations for infants, and he had transplanted hearts from type O blood donors to recipients of different blood types.

Upon seeing the visiting doctors, Mr. Xu realized that Professor Yao was studying his condition and thus, cooperated fully.

"Thank you all for your hard work!"

The fact that Mr. Xu found it laborious to utter a single sentence indicated that the oxygen carried by the blood pumped out from his heart was insufficient to allow him to comfortably finish a full sentence.

His heart function had deteriorated to its extreme and was teetering on the edge of collapse.

"This is Professor Yang from Sanbo Hospital. I invited him here to discuss how we can conduct the heart transplant as soon as possible. There is a potential donor with type A blood. Under normal circumstances, a transplant wouldn’t be viable for you. However, as your surgery is urgent, we’re exploring the possibility of a cross-blood type transplant. Professor Yang’s understanding and experience in this area is greater than mine," Professor Yao honestly explained to Mr. Xu.

Mr. Xu didn’t understand what cross-blood type transplant meant. But coming to the hospital, he decided to leave everything up to the professionals and fully cooperate with whatever treatment was deemed best. Hence, he said,

"I will follow your advice. I trust you."

Trust and cooperation from the patient make ongoing procedures much easier to perform.

Dr. Yang Ping held his hand, "That’s the spirit. Trust between us is essential to a smooth treatment process. Cross-blood type heart transplant is viable; it just requires intricate technical skills. We need to be fully prepared. I’ve discussed this with Professor Yao - we decided to adopt the most advanced heart transplant technique internationally available for cross-blood type transplant."

Hearing that there was hope, Mr. Xu was overjoyed. His worst fear was the doctors declaring their helplessness. As long as there was a solution, even if it posed a risk, it was worth it to him.

"Three years ago, when I was diagnosed with this disease, I knew my days were numbered. I’ve managed to struggle through these years but I think that’s coming to an end. My child is still in high school and I haven’t fulfilled my duty in this world yet. I can’t just let go without remorse. After weighing the options, I decided to fight a few more years, sorry for troubling you," Mr. Xu grew teary as he spoke.

Dr. Yang tried to comfort him, "Don’t be so upset. We’ve found a solution, right? And we have a potential donor too. Now, we just need to prepare for the cross-blood type transplant. Although it’s risky, we’ll do our best to minimize the risk. Rest assured, we’ll give our all."

Mr. Xu nodded, feeling embarrassed for shedding tears in front of the doctors.

But he couldn’t help it - every time he thought about his daughter, he’d well up.

Mr. Xu’s wife, who had been standing quietly at his bedside, handed him a tissue to wipe his tears and chided him lightly, "Look at you, a grown man crying, and making the doctors laugh. Zhenzhen just called, rooting for you. She said her dad surely could make it."

Just then, Dr. Yang noticed Mr. Xu’s wife for the first time. The dark-skinned woman stood strong, holding back her tears, and tried to wear a smile.

After checking on the patient, back in the doctor’s office, Dr. Yang said to Professor Yao, "You should head to the United States as soon as possible to observe their surgical procedure. Gain access to the two types of antibody washing enzymes. The sooner we conduct this surgery, the better."

On one hand, Mr. Xu’s life was at constant risk, and on the other hand, the moment the family of the brain-dead young man decided to give up, Mr. Xu had to undergo surgery immediately. Both situations were unpredictable.

Not wanting to waste any time, Professor Yao decided to apply for an urgent visa to the United States the very next day.

---

Yang Ping did not stay at Nandu Affiliated Hospital One for lunch, rushing back to Sanbo Hospital before noon.

Even on the day of their marriage registration, Yang Ping and Su Yixuan stuck to their normal work schedules, having lunch together in the hospital cafeteria at noon.

In the afternoon, just after Su Yixuan began her regular shift and Yang Ping returned to his office, Director Zhou of the Office of Science and Education came rushing in enthusiastically with his aides, waving to Yang Ping from afar.

"Professor Yang---"

He stormed into the office and immediately instructed his aide to bring out some files.

"Professor Yang, look, Outstanding Young Talent from the National Nature Fund, it was granted exceptionally to you. Normally, you have to complete a doctoral degree to apply for Outstanding Young Talent, but this time your luck was extraordinarily good. Your application went through Nandu Medical University, and it was all-green all the way. It’s been approved exceptionally, and according to the approval documents, as long as you complete your Doctorate within a year from the date of approval, it’s valid." Director Zhou was even happier than when his own project was accepted.

"Be careful, be careful, don’t wrinkle it." Director Zhou instructed his aide to carefully protect the documents.

Back in the day, Director Zhou, Dean Xia, and Director Han were the backbone of Sanbo Hospital. Director Han’s clinical work, Dean Xia’s management, and Director Zhou’s research were the driving forces behind Sanbo Hospital’s foundation.

Director Zhou, too, was a veteran Doctor, but his clinical skills were so poor, he often made blunders. However, he was excellent at research topics and writing papers, so Dean Xia decided to remove him from clinical work and made him responsible for the hospital’s research.

Once reassigned, Director Zhou flourished, making Sanbo Hospital’s research vibrant and prosperous.

It was rumored that many directors’ papers were ghostwritten by Director Zhou, and many directors’ research proposals were also prepared by him.

His biggest flaw, however, was an unyielding fascination with Europe and America.

"Outstanding Young Talent! Very good! If our Sanbo Hospital could produce an Academician before we old people retire, we would wake up laughing from our dreams." Director Zhou was very familiar with the ins and outs of scientific research.

After all, Outstanding Young Talent is a stepping stone towards becoming an Academician.

However, Director Zhou couldn’t understand how Yang Ping, as a newcomer, managed to have his application for Outstanding Young Talent approved so easily, especially without any hold-ups and basically without any effort. After the documents were submitted, it just went straight through.

Such smooth approval was rarely seen, especially because Sanbo Hospital wasn’t a top national hospital.

Director Zhou knew very well that there’s a lot of tricks to getting a research application approved, it’s not just about the value of your research proposal.

Bottom line is, every profession has its own tricks of the trade.

Yang Ping didn’t really care about these things. To be honest, Song Zimo was the one who organized the research data, while he just did the revision and signing. The rest of the application procedures were handled by the Office of Science and Education at both the hospital and Nandu Medical University.

As for the funding for this research, Yang Ping wasn’t worried at all. Whether or not the application was approved didn’t matter to him, it wouldn’t affect his research.

Therefore, he had completely forgotten about this amidst all his recent busyness. Seeing Director Zhou so happy, Yang Ping didn’t react much.

"Why do I see no enthusiasm in you? Outstanding Young Talent! Outstanding Young Talent! That’s huge, man!" Director Zhou waved the papers.

Yang Ping wasn’t excited initially, and he couldn’t feign enthusiasm either. He took the papers, flipped through them and said,

"Yes, it’s the Outstanding Young Talent, I get it. Thank you!"

"Ah, I don’t know what to say to you. If it were anyone else, especially someone under thirty who got the Outstanding Young Talent, they’d be over the moon, unable to sleep for three days. Why do you look so indifferent, are you overtired?" Director Zhou simply couldn’t understand why Yang Ping was so unresponsive.

The younger generation has a high excitement threshold; it isn’t as low as that of us old people. Well, anyhow, I am happy, that’s enough. Director Zhou reconciled himself to the situation.
