Chapter 743: Chapter 662
Yang Ping was on duty quite early that day, arriving at the department a little past six in the morning.
The young doctors from Xiehe Hospital, as well as those from Sanbo Hospital, arrived for duty at six. Though there’s no strict mandate that they do so, the majority of young doctors arrived before six-thirty, their busy day starting shortly after.
They need to review all the test results of the patients they manage, specifically the new ones. Any abnormal results need to be analyzed, and if it’s something outside their field of expertise, they would need to arrange a consultation.
Next, they would adjust medical orders based on the patients’ conditions, order various new tests, monitor the condition of patients who underwent surgery for signs of post-operative changes - whether there is any inflammation around the operation site, or any abnormal volumes of drainage. For those who haven’t had surgery yet, they need to schedule it.
After all this, they would participate in the morning handover rounds of their department, and then the rest of their day would be occupied by surgeries.
Post-surgery in the afternoon, they would have to make further rounds, change dressings, write up case histories - a stack of jobs awaited. Typically, their workday ended past nine in the evening, enabling them to finally head back to the dormitory.
Working as a doctor, especially in big hospitals, is very demanding. Those not physically fit enough are often eliminated halfway. The heavy workload and the round-the-clock commitments are enough to knock down a significant number of them.
The department was buzzing with activity as early as six in the morning.
While Zhang Lin and Little Five were resident physicians, their roles at the moment were more like attending doctors’. They were responsible for instructing the resident physicians in their department.
On the other hand, Song Zimo and Xu Zhiliang, despite their official title as attending doctors, were practically fulfilling the role of assistant chief physicians. They were tasked with leading teams and independently performing various surgeries.
When Yang Ping arrived at his office, he sat down and brewed himself a cup of tea. At this time, everyone was busy and wouldn’t disturb him, so he utilized this opportunity to think about stuff and to perform some experiments within the system space.
However, after just three days of not meeting, his assistants, Song Zimo and Xu Zhiliang needed to catch-up with him and to update him about what had been going on in the department over the last few days.
"Have you heard about the fad in Xiehe of using chopsticks to peel lobsters? They offered you a professorship with an enviable salary, but look at you, here you’re teaching people how to peel lobsters!" Song Zimo ribbed Yang Ping for neglecting his work.
"Professor, you --- never --- took the time --- to teach us --- how to --- peel lobsters." Xu Zhiliang’s stutter was as stuttery as always.
"For lobster peeling, you guys need personal instructions? Each time we go out to eat lobster, that’s a lesson for you. Even Zhang Lin and Little Five can peel a few. I don’t even need to mention you guys." Yang Ping took a sip of his tea.
"If they’re interested in your exceptional skills, they probably won’t have to learn surgery for a while. Your unique techniques are enough for them to learn for several years ---" Song Zimo was worried those doctorates at Xiehe Hospital wouldn’t be able to keep up.
"Robert says he can get Yu Shuilian a powered prosthesis - it’s an experimental product from Boston, US and very mature," Song Zimo reported a new development in the department, which also counted as such things go.
Yang Ping had always wanted to find a powered brace for Yu Shuilian but couldn’t find a suitable product, as most were not mature enough.
Robert’s competence was extraordinary. Despite his playboy image, he boasted widespread connections and impressive work capabilities and frequently accomplished unexpected feats.
In Chinese terms, Robert was both personable and competent.
Back in Yemen, he had flown a medical plane through stumbling blocks to support Yang Ping.
"Just let him keep figuring it out, he’ll feel uncomfortable if he doesn’t busy himself with such things." Yang Ping couldn’t be bothered about such things.
Song Zimo continued his report:
"The surgeries scheduled this week for Old Cheng’s side have all been handled by Old Xu and me. No particularly special patients."
"The progress report for the new research topic is on your office desk. Have a look when you’re free."
"Malaysia is asking for you to go there again for a surgery. It’s a large-scale plastic surgery which requires your help with the skeletal portion. You can have a look at the medical records for specific details."
"Plastic surgery? I like to perform all kinds of surgeries, but the ones I’m least fond of are plastic cosmetic surgeries. Moreover, why would they need me for a large-scale plastic surgery?" Yang Ping wasn’t thrilled about this invitation.
Song Zimo added, "You’d better check the medical record when you have time. I’ve sent it to your email."
"There weren’t any special cases in the department in the last few days. Zhang Lin and Little Five are planning on publishing a book and they would like your help writing the preface. They asked me to check in with you." Song Zimo reported another matter.
"Publishing a book? What book?"
"Laparoscopic Surgery, I’ve seen the manuscript, it’s quite good. If this book really gets published, it would be the first specialty book on laparoscopic surgery in the country."
"This--- these two--- fellows--- have found the --- right direction."
After Song Zimo finished his work report, it was almost time to hand over the shift.
---
At around six in the evening, on the first floor of the Tri-Bo Hotel, the Waterlily Bread Store.
August, Robert, and Director Gao sat at a corner table, enjoying bread and milk tea.
During their period of study, Robert and August often visited this bakery when they were tired. They would have a bite and chat to unwind.
This time, Robert had also invited his good friend Director Gao to the bakery, saying he wanted to treat him to something flavorful and spicy.
Director Gao was puzzled. What could one eat in a bakery that was flavorful? And what could one drink that was spicy?
Turns out, the bakery had introduced a new type of bread made with chili peppers, paired with fruit-flavored milk tea. And that’s what he meant by ’flavorful’ and ’spicy’.
"I heard that Professor Yang was once considering getting Ms. Yu a powered prosthesis?"
Robert inquired Director Gao about some details.
Director Gao often studied in the Comprehensive Surgery Department, so he was very familiar with their stories. He told Robert:
"Professor Yang did indeed have that idea, and this matter has always been managed by Takahashi, but so far, we haven’t found a suitable powered prosthesis."
Robert was quite disdainful, "What can Takahashi do? This matter should have been left to me. Boston’s powered prosthetics laboratory in the United States has a powered prosthesis that is very suitable for Ms. Yu. It just needs customized fitting. Wearing that kind of powered prosthesis, she can walk like a normal person. Once fully charged, it can last for six hours. If power is used conservatively, it can even last a day given one charge. It should meet the daily needs, right? I’ll contact the Boston company."
This company’s powered prosthetics laboratory had cooperated with Robert, and Robert had invested a lot of money in it.
"Yes, that lewd guy can’t accomplish anything. After so long, he still hasn’t found a suitable powered prosthesis. He’s wasting resources." August grumbled.
"More than enough capacity to screw up, but not enough to succeed!" Robert added.
Anyway, both of them looked down upon the Japanese a bit.
Robert and August both spoke Chinese very well, especially Robert. When he suddenly started speaking, it could really surprise people. How could a foreigner speak Chinese so well?
Robert was not just talking for fun, he was serious. What Takahashi couldn’t do, he could.
"Boss Yu!" Robert waved his hand.
Yu Shuilian, leaning on her two crutches, came over to Robert. After training, Yu Shuilian could now tuck the two crutches under her armpits and walk solely by supporting her body with the crutches. She had a juggler’s style.
Not only could she walk, but she was also quite nimble.
"I’ll get you a powered support. Once you put it on, you can walk just like a normal person. How about it?" Robert proposed his idea.
Yu Shuilian always had a smile on her face. She shook her head, "No, no, no, I heard that those things cost hundreds of thousands at the cheapest, and millions at the most expensive. I can walk with these two crutches."
"I don’t want your money. It’s free. I’m not lying to you. You can walk normally with this powered prosthesis. It’s rechargeable and one charge can last for six hours." Robert explained to Yu Shuilian.
"It’s free? That makes me feel uneasy. I can’t accept that." Yu Shuilian had received a lot of help from Yang Ping. She knew that these two foreigners were Professor Yang’s trainees. If they were helping her, it must be because of Professor Yang.
Robert continued to explain, "Free just means no charge. The powered prosthesis is for you to use and in return you give us your feedback, just like a free trial product. We are not giving you the prosthesis, but cooperating with you. This is known by Professor Yang, so don’t worry."
Yu Shuilian also knew that Yang Ping had always had this intention but hadn’t found a suitable product yet.
Takahashi had even measured some of Yu Shuilian’s data for this, such as the measurement of the amputation site, the size and shape of the residual limb, which muscles remained and how strong those muscles were.
Yu Shuilian listened, intending to discuss it with Professor Yang when he came to buy bread. If it was Yang’s intention, she would accept.
