Chapter 740: Chapter 659: The First Lesson of The Team: Starting with Eating Lobster!
The table was quite large, accommodating more than a dozen people without feeling cramped. There was plenty of space between everyone, such that simply cutting down the distance a bit could fit two more chairs.
Qiu Ruo happened to stand next to Yang Ping, so Kong Weiquan, who was sitting next to Yang Ping, moved his chair to the side. Following his lead, everyone else moved their chairs as well, creating enough space for two more. Qiu Ruo sat down next to Yang Ping, followed by Yu Yanwen.
Everyone gathered around the table, over a dozen people in all. Aside from Qiu Ruo and Yu Yanwen, who were women, everyone else was male.
"Next time Professor Yang comes, I’m still hosting. We’re going to eat at Da Dong and no one should compete with me for the bill. Your turns to pay can be postponed to later," Song Yun said after ordering dishes.
"Would you like some beer?" the waiter asked.
Song Yun looked at Yang Ping, who shook his head. In reality, all these scholarship students didn’t drink alcohol.
Today’s midnight snack featured spicy crayfish, but since no one drank alcohol, the beverage accompanying it was some ice-cold Beibingyang soda, a combination with a distinct Beijing flavor.
"Ice-cold Beibingyang soda," Song Yun decided after some consideration.
Everyone started waiting for the dishes to be served. Wangfujing Street was bustling in the evening, living up to its reputation as one of the liveliest areas in Beijing.
"Professor Yang, you completely schooled Chene today. When I took him to the airport, he kept inquiring about you," Song Yun reminisced about the exciting debate between Yang Ping and Chene that had occurred earlier in the day.
He continued, "I’m planning to start a project to research new dyes for bone tumors, in combination with virtual reality and sensor technology. Doing so would allow for a precise determination of tumor boundaries. If the research succeeds, we could wear VR glasses during surgery to see tumors appearing in red, normal tissues in blue, and the bordering area in yellow. Contact between the laser knife and the red or yellow areas would trigger an alarm, while contact with the blue area would not. I’ve had this idea for a while, but upon seeing that Americans’ research has not made substantial progress, I’ve felt discouraged. Professor Yang, for whatever reason, after attending your class today, my confidence soared and I want to proceed with the project."
"Your idea is excellent, and it’s actually a project I’ve also been wanting to conduct. However, given my current workload and commitment to other projects, I haven’t been able to find the time. I think you should restart this project," Yang Ping encouraged Song Yun.
Song Yun was passionate at heart. Today’s lecture given by Yang Ping had inexplicably boosted his intellectual confidence significantly.
"Brother Song, remember to include me in your project," Kong Weiquan said cheerfully. Having participated in the animal experiments on spinal fixation frames, he had long considered himself a part of Yang Ping’s team.
"Professor Yang, you only come by four days a month, which is too little. Can you come by for a week each month?"
"Yes, we can learn so much more with you around."
"The surgery today was completed by just the four of you. Many of the basic surgical skills you display need to be taught to us. Your performance seemed nearly magical."
"Yes, start with teaching us the basics."
Everyone pitched in one after another, turning a midnight snack into a talk about learning. That’s the typical Xiehe Hospital spirit for you.
"Professor Yang, since everyone’s here today, why don’t you train us following your approach? If we make mistakes, please feel free to criticize us without considering our feelings. We would truly appreciate that. During my time at Sanbo Hospital, I truly admired Song Zimo. You were so strict with him, making him practice arthroscopy until he could peel two layers off a grape skin, and carve a knee joint model out of an olive pit."
"Who cares about face when it comes to learning? I’m absolutely shameless when it comes to studying. Professor Yang, feel free to yell at me. I promise I won’t jump off a building," Kong Weiquan said.
"Thank you all for regarding me so highly. Song Yun and Kong Weiquan are familiar with my frankness and directness. If something doesn’t go well in the future, feel free to give me your candid feedback," Yang Ping said, appreciating the friendly atmosphere where no one beat around the bush.
Qiu Ruo sat quietly next to Yang Ping, attentively listening to the conversation.
Her facial features were delicate and harmonious, with a high but natural-looking nose, a mixed race charm, and a perfect figure. It was unclear if she meant to spray perfume, but a faint, enchanting scent wafted from her.
Even the diners in the restaurant, who were there only for their late-night snacks, couldn’t help stealing glances at her.
All of these doctors were young elites among orthopedic surgeons nationwide. Each one of them had scored high grades to enter the eight-year program at Xiehe. They were competitive and often had heated arguments about academic issues.
But when facing Yang Ping, they all showed their admiration as his students. Recalling Chene’s dejected look in front of Yang Ping, Qiu Ruo felt more and more fond of him.
However, Yang Ping didn’t seem to pay much attention to Qiu Ruo. But Qiu Ruo wasn’t in a hurry; this was only their first real meeting after all.
The crayfish and various side dishes were served one by one, while two cases of Beibingyang soda were also brought over. Everyone started to dig in.
"Professor Yang, thank you for the surgery today," Qiu Ruo murmured to Yang Ping.
Yang Ping smiled, "You’re welcome."
Qiu Ruo just touched on the subject and stopped talking after that.
"Professor Yang, come! Try this, see what’s different between the lobster in Beijing and the ones from your southern region." Song Yun put on his gloves and served the first piece to Yang Ping as a show of respect.
"Ladies first, right?" Yang Ping noticed two ladies beside him.
Song Yun was a real gentleman: "Since Professor Yang says ladies first, Qiu Ruo, Yu Yanwen, why don’t you two start?"
These overachievers were quite polite. If it were Fatty, Zhang Lin, and Little Five, they would have already started fighting over food, forget about manners.
"No, no, Professor Yang is the guest!" Yu Yanwen was a bit embarrassed.
Qiu Ruo immediately said, "Then I’ll start."
She picked up a small lobster with her gloved hand, gently removed the head and tail, and peeled off the shell, then put the lobster meat into Yang Ping’s bowl.
"This way, we prioritize ladies and guests, no need to fret over it anymore."
Everyone laughed at Qiu Ruo’s solution, all eyes on Yang Ping.
Since Qiu Ruo had shelled one for him, Yang Ping didn’t think much of it, picked up the lobster meat with his chopsticks and ate it, thus, everyone officially started eating.
"Everybody, eat up! There’s plenty tonight. Professor Yang, why are you not diving in?" Song Yun started eating the lobster, but noticed Yang Ping hadn’t put on gloves yet.
Yang Ping smiled, "I don’t eat lobsters with my hands."
Indeed, he didn’t like to eat small lobsters directly with his hands. Even if he wore gloves, it would still feel greasy. He always used chopsticks to indirectly peel the lobsters.
Not directly with the hands? Then with what?
Everyone was very curious. This Professor Yang simply did things his own way, even eating a lobster was different.
They saw Yang Ping pick up a small lobster with chopsticks, place it on the plate, and then with a chopstick in each hand, the two chopsticks worked together. No one clearly saw what he did, but the lobster was quickly decapitated, tail removed, and shelled by the two chopsticks, with the shell and head left on one side, and the intact meat on the other side, all in just two seconds.
Song Yun and everyone else were dumbstruck. They hadn’t seen someone eat small lobsters this way, so cleanly and intact with just two chopsticks.
"Professor Yang, looks like, our training should start with learning how to shell a lobster with chopsticks." Song Yun finally commented after a short pause.
After witnessing this, all the doctors could only think: What the f*ck!
They couldn’t find the right words to express their amazement. They hadn’t seen someone peel a small lobster this way, and do it so quickly and neatly.
Was this a surgical procedure or eating a small lobster?
Qiu Ruo, on the other hand, was as if watching a magic show. No, she actually took this scene as a magic trick.
"Professor Yang, could you show us a slow-motion version?" Kong Weiquan also wanted to learn the technique.
Immediately, Song Yun announced, "Our team’s first lesson: Deshelling a Lobster with Chopsticks. Professor Yang will now demonstrate it again. Everyone, pay close attention and practice when you get home. There’ll be a test next time Professor Yang visits."
When Yang Ping started peeling the second one, all the doctors took off their gloves and took out their phones.
This was worth a tutorial video!
