Chapter 713: Chapter 635: Flawless Blood Transplant
In such a setting, the director of Sanbo Hospital’s medical services could not afford to brag. If he were to really brag, he would make himself the laughing stock of the medical world. Besides, as a provincial hospital, there was no need to brag.
So, about ten experts remained somewhat skeptical, really curious to hear what Professor Yang had to say about organ transplantation.
"Professor Yang, could you share your thoughts?"
Director Zhao encouraged him once again, nudging Yang Ping to speak to boost the hospital’s reputation.
No matter if they were professors from Beijing or Shanghai, it was clear they did not regard Sanbo Hospital highly, at least in regards to today’s case.
Both Director Li and Director Liu were incapable of persuading these experts. In front of these experts, Director Li and Director Liu were just amateurs.
Yang Ping cleared his throat. He wasn’t one to put up airs, but Director Zhao had put him on the spot and for the sake of Sanbo Hospital, he had to step up.
If he didn’t have anything substantial to say, people might think Sanbo Hospital was all talk and no substance.
"In reality, the concerns everyone has about this patient indeed exist. However, they can be completely avoided. For example, we can shorten surgery time to around two hours, decrease exposure, and thereby reduce the risk of infection. To prevent ischemic organ damage, we can immediately place the organ function after the surgery using the ischemia-free technique. When these methods are combined, risks are minimal. The surgery has to be performed, so to say that it is highly risky isn’t true. This is standard surgery, standard perioperative management." Yang Ping finished, speaking calmly and without rush.
"A surgery time reduced to two hours? Are you sure you’re talking about performing liver and kidney transplants simultaneously? That’s absurd!"
The professors from Beijing, who were against the surgery from the start, were now even more exasperated since this young professor had just mentioned controlling the surgery time to two hours. This was pure nonsense to them.
The professors from Shanghai agreed. A stand-alone liver transplant typically takes 4-6 hours. In the best-circumstances, with a wealth of experience, it might be shortened to about three hours. That’s just for liver transplantation. The patient also required a kidney transplant. Even with two teams of surgeons, it would be impossible to complete both surgeries in two hours. Again, this was pure nonsense.
Individuals skilled in their craft despise those who don’t know what they’re talking about, yet act as if they do.
He even dared to mention performing ischemia-free transplants, acting as though he knew a great deal about it.
Theory is theory, practice is practice. Reading about a procedure ten thousand times does not equate to performing it once.
"Professor Yang, have you performed liver and kidney transplants before?"
The professor from Shanghai asked without any pretense. It seemed that this amateur had stepped into his territory, and he was ready for a stringent counterattack.
A polite way to ask would’ve been, "Professor Yang, how many liver and kidney transplants do you perform each year?"
However, using such an aggressive approach made it clear that he was also upset.
"I haven’t yet, but I have performed an autologous heart transplant to remove a tumour and correct a cardiac malformation," Yang Ping replied honestly. He wasn’t one to lie. He only spoke the truth.
An autologous heart transplant, especially one with a malformed heart, does count as a heart transplant and shares similarities with allograft heart surgery.
However, performing liver and kidney transplants is another matter altogether. Yang Ping had not performed these, yet still dared to talk about it.
Yang Ping hated such settings because they called for many explanations.
Many things were simply hard to explain. Even though he had practiced various surgeries in the simulation lab—including liver and kidney transplants, in fact, any kind of surgery—he had never performed them in the real world.
"Professor Wang, your words are a bit disrespectful, don’t you think? What do you mean by ’talking nonsense’? " Director Zhao became agitated. Arguing was fine, but using words like ’talking nonsense’ was disrespectful to Sanbo Hospital.
Professor Wang from Beijing, with his notoriously bad temper and pride, having spent a long time at the top of the organ transplantation field, often resorted to the phrase ’talking nonsense’ almost involuntarily.
Forget about Sanbo Hospital, even those professors in Shanghai still get rebuked by him,
"Never even having done a single liver or kidney transplant but bluffing in front of us isn’t nonsense? You’re saying this surgery can be done in two hours, can you do it? No-ischemia transplant, you think no-ischemia transplantation is that easy to use?" Professor Wang from Beijing grumbled angrily.
Unusually, the professors from Shanghai backed up the professor from Beijing:
"Young people can talk without aches, if all you say is true, then we all don’t need to sit here discussing."
As organ transplant specialists, they would quarrel against each other, but when someone challenged their own professional authority, they presented a united front.
Originally, he was just stating the harsh truth, but considering his own standards, he momentarily didn’t consider the environment of this discussion. He didn’t expect to invite a group attack, something Yang Ping hadn’t anticipated.
Yang Ping also felt awkward. If he rambled on recklessly now, he wouldn’t be responsible for the patient. If he spoke seriously and stirred up public wrath, it would also be worth noting that if he showed any sign of weakness, he’s declaring to the world that he’s a person who speaks mindlessly. He cannot bear this kind of reputation casually.
"Experts, I’m not talking nonsense, purely from a surgical point of view, liver and kidney transplants mainly test one’s ability to perform vascular anastomosis and the knowledge of liver and kidney anatomy. I believe that the surgery can be completed in about two hours. To reduce the probability of complications, we must use no-ischemia transplant technology. If these two surgical conditions are met, although the condition of these two patients is very poor, they will not face much risk."
Whatever Professor Yang says goes, Director Zhao straightened his back. Ever since Yang Ping joined Sanbo Hospital, every time he spoke it sounded like he was bragging, but he never fell short, not even once.
At this point, Professor Yao from Nandu Affiliated Hospital One spoke again: "I think Professor Yang’s opinion is very good. No-ischemia transplant is not widely used yet, but it is very suitable for these two patients. It allows organ transplantation to gain complete function immediately, reversing the condition and moving in a positive direction whilst avoiding possible complications. If necessary, we can provide you with the extracorporeal multi-organ repair system (Life-X). This system can create near-physiological perfusion pressure, temperature, oxygenation, and nutritional support for ex vivo organs. It can ensure that the organ maintains vitality throughout the process from excision to transplant without interrupting blood supply."
This extracorporeal multi-organ repair system was invented by the Organ Transplant Center of Nandu Affiliated Hospital One. This technology was also first put forth by them, but at present, only Nandu Affiliated Hospital One is using it and the paper was even published in the journal Science.
Unexpectedly, Yang Ping from Sanbo Hospital was familiar with his technology. Professor Yao suddenly felt a sense of camaraderie, so he spoke a little more.
"The effectiveness of this new object remains to be tested over time. It should not be used on complex patients."
Professor Wang from Beijing is used to having his way. Just now, Yang Ping made the surgery he opposed sound so straightforward, and now Professor Yao firmly supports Yang Ping, so naturally, Professor Wang was unhappy.
"Yes, one must be cautious with immature technology. Medical skills are sometimes a double-edged sword." Professor Pei from Shanghai and Professor Wang from Beijing joined forces, putting down Professor Yao’s remarks.
"These complex patients are the most suitable for no-ischemia technology. No-ischemia transplantation technology is the future of organ transplant. We have already accumulated dozens of cases. I think it’s very mature." Yang Ping remained steadfastly supportive of his own opinion.
Yang Ping also researched these two cases. The two patients would be at great risk if using conventional technology, but the risk would be nearly minimized if they could use no-ischemia technology.
And Nandu Affiliated Hospital One has dozens of experiences of no-ischemia liver transplants, and this new technology is also applied to kidney transplants.
So after researching, Yang Ping believes that if he can use the no-ischemia transplant technology of Nandu Affiliated Hospital One, this problem would be perfectly solved.
After Yang Ping’s words were spoken, Professor Wang from Beijing and Professor Pei from Shanghai widened their eyes in disbelief.
Surgery is no child’s play and can’t be gambled on, else the two senior professors would definitely say: "Since you’re so skilled, why don’t you give it a try?"
While these established professors could curse at each other during meetings, but whatever happens, they will never say such words that disregard life.
The meeting was momentarily in a deadlock, and continuing the discussion would only incite new arguments.
"Everyone free to say what you want, say anything and everything. Speak confidently, Sanbo Hospital is very accommodating. In academic discussions, we can fight behind closed doors. Once you get out of this meeting room, you can drink and chat happily, right? Now that Professor Yang mentioned shortening the surgery time and using no-ischemia transplant technology, is it feasible?"
Director Zhao asked with a very serious demeanor, emphasizing each word.
With so many professors, if they didn’t discuss and reach a conclusion today, the consultation fee paid by the Earth’s bravest would be wasted.
