Chapter 492: Chapter 448: Animal Experiment Base
Hermes was once again hospitalised, his leg was saved, and after three to four weeks of rehabilitation training, the external fixation frame could be removed, thus concluding the entire treatment.
At the behest of Yang Ping, Huang Jiacai began to strategize. He already had a well-established plan in mind.
First, he set up a development limited company in the name of Yang Ping, which was essentially an investment firm focusing on pharmaceutical industry investments. The plan was to use this investment company to gain control over Ruixing, and to control many more companies in the future.
In the company, Yang Ping held ninety percent of the shares, Xiao Su held ten, and the registered capital was one hundred million. Huang Jiacai appointed himself as the CEO and legal representative, becoming Yang Ping’s agent and assisting him in handling business matters.
Huang Jiacai was high-spirited, with a grand blueprint in his heart that he sought to steadily realize.
After the surgery on Li Baosheng, other surgeries did not need Yang Ping’s involvement for the time being as Song Zimo and Xu Zhiliang could handle them.
As for high-difficulty surgeries, Xu Zhiliang was not quite ready for them, but he was perfectly capable of independently performing general surgeries and could do them beautifully.
Thus, Song Zimo’s workload was significantly lightened, allowing him to concentrate on performing challenging surgeries.
When he had some time, Yang Ping took a trip to Guilin, Guangxi to inspect the Xiehe Hospital’s laboratory there.
Yang Ping needed to have a thorough understanding of the Guilin lab in order to design an animal experiment plan based on the lab’s conditions.
Traveling from Nandu to Guilin, Guangxi was very convenient. The high-speed rail only took about three hours, not much different from taking a plane. Besides, he could also enter the system space lab to read and conduct experiments on the way.
Upon arriving in Guilin, Director He of the lab came to pick up Yang Ping with a driver in a Haval H9.
The lab was located in the Yanshan District of Guilin. There was an experimental monkey breeding base here. Xiehe Hospital set up the lab here to conveniently acquire experimental monkeys.
"Professor Liang called me a few days ago and repeatedly instructed me to ensure good reception," said Director He enthusiastically when he met Yang Ping at the high-speed rail station, shaking his hand and even insisting on carrying his bag.
Old He was the director of the lab. He used to work in the animal department of Guangxi Medical University. After the establishment of this lab, he applied to work here. This lab didn’t have a standard system, but the salary was much higher and the work was interesting, which met Old He’s life expectations.
Before he changed jobs, he had found out that this lab was established by Xiehe Hospital and planned to exist for the long term. Therefore, he quit his original job and joined this lab.
Director He was a veterinary science graduate student. He loved animals and was always researching. He was an expert in experimental animals. He was familiar with the purchase, breeding, and caretaking of experimental animals, and was also familiar with the production of most medical models currently.
In addition to Director He, there were about a dozen other permanent staff members in the lab. Plus the rotating researchers, there were usually two or three dozen people working in the lab. The rotating staff consisted of employees from Xiehe Hospital and Hong Kong, and occasionally foreign researchers came over. They usually stayed less than three months.
On the way, Old He explained the situation of the lab. They drove in the Haval car for what seemed like a long while before stopping in a yard in front of several small buildings. There was an open-air parking lot with a shed that could fit at least ten cars in the standard parking spaces that had all been marked out.
As Old He opened the car door, Yang Ping got out of the car.
The several small buildings were beautifully built, all three stories high. The yard was large, and the trees inside were tall and big.
"The first building over there is offices and dormitories, the second is the lab, and the last is the breeding site for experimental animals," Director He pointed to the distance.
The third building was quite far away, located on an artificial island surrounded by wide and deep trenches. To get there, one had to cross a bridge which had a locked iron gate on it.
"The young monkeys you ordered are prepared. The models for scoliosis are also ready. It’s hard to get a monkey for experimentation now. The people in charge of supply are my classmates. I’ve told them that under any circumstances, we have to guarantee supply on our end. They didn’t complain, but indeed, there’s a shortage of experimental monkeys. The last time a company from the United States ordered one thousand five hundred of them, they had to refuse because they could not deliver," explained Director He, who was familiar with several large-scale experimental animal breeding grounds in Guangxi.
Darwin said that humans evolved from monkeys, so monkeys are highly similar to humans in terms of genetics, anatomy, immune system, physiology, and metabolism. Therefore, it is very suitable to use monkeys for pharmaceutical and biological research experiments.
Especially in the pharmaceutical industry, the reliance on monkeys is evident. Every type of drug has side effects, but what are they? Are they carcinogenic, pathogenic, teratogenic, toxic, mutagenic, disable causing, or even lethal? The best way to get data before applying a drug to humans is to acquire it from monkey experiments.
However, not all monkeys are suitable for experiments. To become an experimental monkey, various conditions need to be met. Currently, the frequently used monkeys are Rhesus monkeys and Crab-eating macaques. These two types of monkeys are anatomically and physiologically closer to humans, and are currently the most favoured medical experimental animals.
In Europe, raising a cotton monkey would cost about 3,800 euros, while a larger macaque would cost 15,000 euros. However, in China, raising a macaque suitable for pharmaceutical experiments only costs 8,000 RMB.
The low cost of experimental monkeys in China determines a lower price, which is a huge temptation for foreign research institutions and pharmaceutical companies.
Such a monkey that costs 8,000 RMB can be sold at market price for 12,000 RMB, yielding a gross profit of 50%.
With such high profits, naturally, people are willing to earn money from monkeys, and as such, many "monkey farming" bases have emerged in the country.
Places like Guangxi and Hainan are regions where monkey farming bases are concentrated. The raising of experimental monkeys also requires professional knowledge. As monkeys for scientific research, not only do they need to be physically healthy, but also psychologically healthy. Therefore, their breeding conditions are very good.
"Now our lab is making profits. Not only can we meet our own experimental needs, we can also make money. In our spare time, we rent out part of the lab to some biomedical research and development institutions to perform drug and toxicity experiments. We charge by day, and a project fee can be as low as several hundred thousand or as much as several million," said Director He radiantly.
"We’ll have lunch in the cafeteria. There’s a pig farm nearby, the owner is a good friend of mine, I asked him to help buy some fresh meat and pig offal from the slaughterhouse. It will arrive soon, and once the ingredients arrive, the dishes will be made right away."
According to Old He, around tens of people usually have meals in the lab, and the chef in the cafeteria was his wife.
Afterwards, Old He took Yang Ping on a tour of the lab. The lab was not only well-equipped, but also very advanced. There was a surgery room where the surgery anesthesia equipment was very sophisticated, and they even had extracorporeal circulation equipment, which meant that they could simulate heart surgery.
"For the scoliosis models that we urgently need, they usually remove the Erector Spinae muscle to create them. Professor Liang said that such models are not suitable for your experiments. Hence, we eliminated all such monkeys and only prepared monkeys with scoliosis caused by embryonic drug teratogenesis, thus preserving the entire soft tissue structure of the spine," explained Director He very professionally.
People who are interested in their work and have a sense of professional honor, will certainly do a good job.
"Our suppliers are quite proficient in creating models of other diseases, such as models for Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, obesity, middle cerebral artery occlusion, hypertension in monkeys, and renal dysfunction. They also have experimental monkeys carrying specific genes for creating special models for diseases like AIDS. But for scoliosis models, they are not very familiar, and I often have to guide them. The method I use to create scoliosis models was taught by Professor Liang," said Old He enthusiastically. He seemed invigorated when talking about experimental animals.
The business of experimental animals is very specialized. These disease models have to mimic human diseases in monkeys either by special breeding or injection, in order to study related drugs.
The specific methods involve a high level of technical skill. Creating a model with drugs involves calculating the right timing, selection, and dosage. The creation of a high-quality disease model is not an easy task.
After visiting the laboratory, Old He guided Yang Ping around the campus which could be developed into tourist attractions with a bit of improvement.
A considerable investment was made in the laboratory. The Animal Island, the isolation rivers surrounding it, and the animal rests are all outstandingly designed.
The animal rest area provides swings, slides, seesaws, wooden houses, and more for the monkeys to play.
Around noon, Old He receives a call. The fresh ingredients had arrived, provided by the manager of the pig farm he entrusted. He instructed the driver to fetch them promptly and told him to turn on the air conditioning in the driving cabin. As soon as he gets the ingredients, he should hand them over to the kitchen immediately. The freshness of pork offal is specifically important for the taste.
The driver in the Haval car set off again. Surprisingly the roads were quite convenient here, and they were paved with concrete, much wider than rural roads, standard two-lane roads.
Yang Ping felt at ease with the conditions of the lab, and after this visit, he felt reassured enough to hand over many animal experiments to them in the future.
On the technical aspect, there was nothing to worry about. Old He and his staff were very professional.
The actual research was conducted by the graduates from Xiehe, so there was no issue at all.
Several young people returned in a pickup truck. Old He said, "These are PhDs from Xiehe. They like to have fun, often go fishing in their spare time. Today, since you’re here, I had them catch some fish. I wonder what their haul was."
The young people parked the truck and took a big tub out of the pickup bed.
"Let me see... very good."
Old He and Yang Ping walked over. There were several big fish in the tub, splashing water around.
"Take them to the kitchen," Old He ordered.
"And this is Dr. Yang!" Old He remembered to introduce him.
Several young people immediately greeted him respectfully. They seemed to know about Yang Ping’s circumstances already and appeared somewhat constrained since he was personally recommended by Professor Liang.
"Did you buy all the drinks? Beer, can’t be short of beer," Old He commanded, showing a good rapport with these young individuals.
"This car is so dirty, go get it washed," Old He said, revealing his affectionate side.
The young people drove the car aside, picked up a hosepipe, and started to wash the car.
"You see, when it’s time for the experiment, just tell me what you need," Old He said to Yang Ping after showing him around.
Each experimental project has its specific requirements, and Old He needed to prepare in advance.
"If we usually use monkeys for spinal surgery, do you have any spinal surgery position frames to fix the monkey’s spine?" Yang Ping asked, as he noticed this was missing earlier.
"Yes! We have several in the warehouse," Old He was well-acquainted with the equipment.
"That’s good. Our spinal external fixation frame experiment model has not yet come out of the factory. Once it does, I’ll contact you and have it couriered over. We will perform the fixation placement surgery. You guys need to help adjust daily," Yang Ping explained the division of labor simply.
Old He responded, "Hmm, I’ve scheduled some time in the afternoon for you to lecture. The few doctors from Xiehe will be specifically responsible for your project."
From the kitchen, Old He’s wife sent someone to ask him for help.
"You go and see, I’ll wander around by myself," Yang Ping offered, and he walked around the lab complex. Several doctors came over to chat.
