Chapter 1500: Chapter 1120 A Good Method_2
Xiao Qin didn’t even listen to the patient and quickly prescribed medication, printing out the prescription: "Try taking this for two weeks first."
"What medicine, doctor?" The patient picked up the prescription to see for himself.
"Diclofenac Sodium? This is a non-steroidal medication, right? I have stomach ulcers, can I take it?" The patient asked worriedly.
"You can take it! There’s no reason you can’t. Just don’t take it if your stomach hurts." Xiao Qin was impatient with the patient’s questioning.
"But the previous doctor said I have stomach ulcers and shouldn’t take this medication, saying it could harm the stomach and cause bleeding. Now you’re prescribing it for two weeks; won’t there be problems?" The patient held onto the prescription, lingering on the chair with many questions.
"Did the previous doctor say that?" Xiao Qin seemed unsure.
"Yes." The patient confirmed.
Xiao Qin immediately took out his phone to search Diclofenac Sodium’s instructions on Baidu, reading word by word; indeed, it stated that patients with stomach ulcers shouldn’t take it.
"Doctor, why do you need to check your phone while diagnosing? This scares me." The patient was dumbfounded. Although it was mentioned in advance that a young doctor would be assisting and there would be examiners grading, he didn’t expect it to be so ridiculous. A bona fide doctor using phone searches to solve problems was unsettling; who would dare take medicine prescribed by such a doctor?
"It’s okay. There are too many medications for a doctor to remember all. Checking is being responsible to you. Let me cancel the prescription I just gave you; you don’t need to take the medicine, just go home and rest."
The patient has a stomach ulcer now, making Xiao Qin unsure of what medication to use.
"What medicine did you use last time?" Xiao Qin had to ask the patient, hoping to replicate the previous treatment.
"I don’t remember." The patient thought for a moment.
Forget it then, better not prescribe anything, just gloss it over with some casual remarks, thought Xiao Qin.
A Ph.D. in Orthopedics who has completed internships in various departments, yet prescribed two weeks of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to a patient with stomach ulcers. What a lack of medical common sense! Yang Ping, Song Zimo, Xu Zhiliang, and several other examiners nearby were becoming serious. Was this playing with the patient’s life? Even a basic intern wouldn’t make such a simple mistake.
"Doctor, I brought all these films; could you please take a look? I spent hundreds on these tests, it would be a shame if they weren’t examined." The patient took out the MRI films from the bag and handed them to Xiao Qin.
Xiao Qin couldn’t read MRI films, but it affected the "research projects" he did in middle school with MRI. Now the patient was so insistent, if Xiao Qin declined, others might suspect that he couldn’t read MRI films. So Xiao Qin took the films and pretended to examine them.
"Your diagnosis currently is herniated disc, go back and rest for a while and then check again." Xiao Qin said.
"Doctor, the report didn’t say herniated disc; it mentioned spondylolisthesis. Could you please examine it carefully?" The patient pulled out the MRI report and pointed to the MRI on the viewing light.
Xiao Qin impatiently said, "Do you believe me or the report? Regardless, rest first to alleviate symptoms, and then we’ll talk in three months."
"Rest for three months? Doctor, how can I do that? Resting for three months would cost me my job. Please prescribe some medication."
"Just go home and rest. I have other patients to see."
Xiao Qin impatiently said.
If the patient hadn’t been good-tempered and was aware it was an exam with another doctor reviewing later, he might have exploded and slammed the table on the spot.
The second part of the hands-on exam wasn’t much better for Xiao Qin, startling Yang Ping again. Xiao Qin couldn’t do surgical knots, didn’t recognize basic surgical instruments, had no concept of sterility during a handwash and gowning process, and more.
During the third part, the interview, Yang Ping casually asked a few questions, all related to papers and patents from Xiao Qin’s middle school years, and he couldn’t answer a single one. He was bewildered, clueless about basic research methods and such. Yang Ping had a clear understanding about Xiao Qin as a doctor.
Not to mention the written exam, which was dismal for dear Xiao Qin. Out of a hundred questions, he answered only ten correctly.
This was a medical Ph.D. who completed clinical internships; Yang Ping couldn’t believe that grabbing any intern doctor from Sanbo Hospital wouldn’t perform worse than this. Was he here to take an exam or make a joke?
On Dean Xia’s desk lay Xiao Qin’s exam scores, with Director Qin sitting across. He picked up the score booklet, scrutinizing each score, unwilling to accept that the medical Ph.D. they painstakingly nurtured performed at this level. Before the exam, Xiao Qin had confidently assured him over the phone.
How could it turn out like this?
Director Qin’s old face burned with embarrassment as he flipped the scorebook, which crackled in his hands. Dean Xia turned the LCD screen around: "Old Qin, look at the complete exam video beforehand. The patient clearly stated having stomach ulcers, yet he prescribed two weeks of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. If it wasn’t an exam, it would have been a medical accident. What if the patient experiences gastric bleeding? Several times during handwashing and gowning in the operating room, he violated sterility rules, contaminating himself... You should see for yourself..."
Director Qin put down the scorebook, leaned closer to the LCD screen, and grew increasingly embarrassed, wishing to find a hole to crawl into. Damn, is this what a Ph.D. in Medicine does? These years of studying medicine were wasted. If only he arranged for a decent hospital job elsewhere for him. Insisting on Sanbo Hospital now makes a mockery of this subpar doctor. Everyone recognizes his weak credentials, a Ph.D. at least acknowledged by others if he hadn’t come here, regardless of his actual capability.
"Old Qin, you’ve seen it yourself. In Xiao Qin’s situation, would you dare let your son perform the main surgery on you? You wouldn’t. Would you let him perform main surgeries on the public later? This is just fooling around, playing with lives like kids playing house." Dean Xia pointed at the exam video and said.
Director Qin remained silent, unable to refute, letting Dean Xia speak, recognizing the kind of person his son had become.
"If Sanbo Hospital were to have doctors like this, do you think the hospital’s level could rise? I keep saying, for Sanbo Hospital to advance to top provincial, national, and world-class status, it requires an outstanding team of talent. Once corruption sneaks into the doctor recruitment, and backdoor entries happen, the excellent talent pool will inevitably be replaced by mediocrity. When the substitution reaches a certain proportion, the end is near!"
Dean Xia touched his teacup, unreservedly lectured Director Qin, who endured humiliatingly.
"Old Qin, now you understand why we trace back to college entrance exam scores for recruitment, only hiring medical students who entered prestigious schools through the exam. While scores aren’t everything, those with excellent scores show superior intelligence, knowledge, learning ability, thinking skills, and psychological qualities. These so-called talents who bypassed the exam, pardon me, I don’t know about other industries, but in medicine, so-called talents in the past haven’t been genuine; not one endures scrutiny. You know this well yourself. Your son’s educational background appears grand, writing papers and patents in high school, winning awards, and awing outsiders. But those within the field know the truth, right? How did he produce those things? From his efforts? Now, I bet he couldn’t write a paper to that caliber even if asked.
"Old Qin, both you and I come from the countryside, and we understand doing what’s best for our children. But maybe switch paths. In this field, given your son’s situation, trouble is inevitable earlier or later. Better to switch to a less critical industry."
Agh, Director Qin was subjected to a half-hour long lecture from Dean Xia regarding his son, sweating in shame all over his back.
After Director Qin left, Dean Xia pondered and felt enlightened, immediately calling Director Zhou from the medical education division: "Old Zhou, there’s been so much chatter over people wanting to join our hospital lately, which has been troubling us. Now, I have a solution."
"What solution?" Director Zhou curiously asked.
"No matter who is referred for entry into Sanbo Hospital, accept them all, and then send them over to the Institute to take exams, broadcasting the whole exam process live online." Dean Xia said.
Director Zhou didn’t immediately understand. After a moment, he realized: "Ah, you’re clever. That’s a good strategy. It doesn’t offend anyone and they voluntarily quit."
