Chapter 1356: Chapter 1028: Only the professor of tomorrow can be dominant in front of the professor.
"Professor, this surgery is a bit tricky, a whole bunch of abnormalities—cardiac diverticulum, tricuspid atresia, interventricular septal defect, interatrial septal defect, pulmonary artery stenosis, and so on. Moreover, these abnormalities are not simple; each one is particularly severe, and the patient is already of such advanced age. Brian is in medicine, why wasn’t the surgery performed earlier? It’s a miracle that the child has lived to be six years old."
Song Zimo looked at this whole set of heart abnormalities and couldn’t help but grumble to himself.
"Perform the surgery earlier? Who would do it? You?" Yang Ping blurted out unexpectedly.
Although these words were spoken lightly from Yang Ping’s mouth, they hit Song Zimo hard; he found himself momentarily at a loss for words.
Right, with such complicated Cantrell pentology, who would perform the surgery? According to the medical history, Brian had tried everything he could think of. Apart from Professor Yang, it’s likely that anyone who could be asked had already been approached, and seeing so many abnormalities, especially with adhesions everywhere, nobody dared to take on the case.
"If Brian had come to me, I would have done the child’s surgery a long time ago; there’d be no need to wait until now," Song Zimo finally thought of a rebuttal.
Xu Zhiliang looked up at Song Zimo. Dr. Song is so domineering today, and even in front of the professor—has the sun risen from the west?
Seeing the look Xu Zhiliang gave him, Song Zimo continued: "If he’d come to me, I would have surely shown the case history to the professor, then the child would have been saved."
"You—you—speak your full sentence."
Xu Zhiliang’s admiration for Song Zimo was instantly shattered; he had thought him so domineering. Alas, it seems that the only one who can afford to be domineering in front of the professor is the professor of tomorrow.
"Aren’t Americans full of arrogance every day? How come they can’t perform this surgery?" Song Zimo asked again.
Yang Ping said dismissively, "At the time, there indeed was an American doctor who dared to take it on, thumping his chest and assuring Brian that the surgery would be no problem."
"Is it that so-called bravest doctor in the world who dares to perform any surgery? How come he didn’t show up later?" Song Zimo found the topic interesting as they discussed.
"While he was thumping his chest with Brian, his surgical license was directly revoked shortly after. Haven’t you heard? Most of his surgeries only have imaging pictures from before and during the surgery, but no post-operative images," Yang Ping continued to say as he performed the surgery.
"How could that be? That’s utterly unprofessional."
Xia Shu said.
"Few patients ever survive to be taken off the operating table. How could there be post-operative images?" Song Zimo understood what Yang Ping meant.
Xia Shu said curiously, "So that’s the case."
"This person is the number one hotshot in the American medical world, dominating the scene for ten years. Few patients whom he operated on lived to be taken off the operating table, yet for so long, he managed to come through utterly unscathed, even winning awards hand over fist. There was a time when one of his assistants had nightmares every day after watching his surgeries. The assistant thought what he was conducting was not surgery but terrible human anatomy. Believing that the doctor was messing around, daring to perform surgeries without understanding the basics, he went to file a complaint. The medical association’s investigation, however, found no issues with the hotshot; he graduated from a prestigious school, so his educational qualifications were unquestionable. Having completed formal residency and specialty physician training, he was certified, thus no problem with his medical qualifications either. Upon reviewing his case surgery records, everything met the required standards and procedures. So, there were no issues at all. The most astonishing part was that many assistants, anesthetists, and nurses who worked with him had complained about him, but that didn’t stop him from being an eminent doctor wearing a halo," Yang Ping explained leisurely to everyone.
"No way, really?" Xia Shu was utterly dumbfounded; this case shattered his perceptions.
"The professor never speaks deceitfully," Song Zimo took over the conversation.
It was somewhat frightening to chat about such topics on the operating table. Xia Shu felt a chill down his spine, actually encountering such a doctor; he thought Professor Yang was just joking, but it turned out to be true.
Yang Ping and everyone casually chatted while performing the surgery, methodically, step by step, and soon, all the heart malformations were corrected.
---
With this tub of popcorn, Brian no longer felt anxious at all; it was pretty much like watching a movie. No wonder the little girl held on to this thing—it really could soothe one’s emotions.
In such a relaxed state of mind, as he watched, the movie came to an end. Yang Ping corrected the heart’s internal malformations and adjusted the major vascular structures to align properly, repairing all defects. Finally, the heart was restarted with blood flowing through it once more.
Seeing his granddaughter’s heart pounding strongly on the screen, Brian finally realized that the movie had reached its closing scenes.
After a tub of popcorn, Brian fulfilled a wish in his life that he thought was impossible. Sitting in front of the crowd, his mood was now very complex. The world was different from what he had imagined, as if this place was another world entirely.
Things that seemed impossible to achieve elsewhere could be easily accomplished here.
The heart was beating well, the sewn major vascular structures showed no signs of leakage, and the intraoperative surface ultrasound monitoring found that the blood flow within the heart through all the chambers and passages was unproblematic—all malformations were corrected. Professor Yang’s skills in patching and repairing were indeed brilliant—the previously chaotic heart now appeared to have returned to normal through his hands.
With the empty popcorn tub in hand, Brian intended to take it back as a souvenir; this tub of popcorn held strong symbolic meaning.
The surgery was over, and the audience dispersed to their respective places; there was still much work waiting for everyone. These people had stolen a moment from their busy schedules to watch a major film. The doctors discussed the surgery while departing in groups of threes and fives.
The images on the screen were finally turned off. Manstein said, "Shall we wait at the entrance of the operating room?"
Only then did Brian come to a sudden realization in his trance—the surgery he had just watched was his granddaughter’s. He now felt a sense of fear after the fact. Had there been even a slight problem during the surgery, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
Manstein led Brian to the Family Waiting Area just outside the operating room. There were also relatives of other patients undergoing surgery. Judging by their attire and demeanor, these people were not the wealthy or privileged class but ordinary citizens.
Brian remembered the chaotic and lively scene he had seen in the outpatient department. At that moment, he felt that the Chinese people were indeed fortunate. Unlike in Sweden, ordinary citizens would never get the chance to meet such top-tier experts, let alone freely choose them to be the chief surgeons for their operations. Patients do not have the power to choose any doctor for any surgery; whoever the chief surgeon may be, the patient must passively accept it.
"What should I say afterwards when Aisha comes out? To express my deepest gratitude," Brian asked Manstein, who was knowledgeable about China.
"Do you mean using the most formal Chinese etiquette to express your deepest gratitude?" Manstein asked.
Brian nodded.
Manstein thought for a moment, This is tricky, what kind of etiquette should be used at this moment?
PS: The mention of a formidable figure in the American medical community during the idle chat in this Chapter is not fictional; there’s a real-life model, a cervical spine surgeon, whose patients either died or were paralyzed because he was a well-known expert who graduated from a prestigious school, yet understood nothing of the basic knowledge of surgery. He operated haphazardly, and for many years strangely enough, nothing happened, despite multiple complaints and investigations. It’s really inexplicable; perhaps he was "legally compliant"!
