Chapter 1224: Chapter 947: Advance by Retreat_2
Ning Qi now has a very good relationship with Xiao Su, having become good friends. To express her gratitude to Yang Ping, she had already made arrangements with Xiao Su to invite Yang Ping and Xiao Su to her home for a meal, which she would cook herself.
At this moment, Li Gaoyang in the United States was in great pain. Faced with a sudden blow, he felt somewhat resentful. There were still many things he needed to do; as the elite of the younger generation in his family, he was now expected to lead his family forward. Yet, at this precise moment, a health check revealed a problem.
Fate can be so cruelly ironic, playing such a huge joke on him. Despite his immense wealth and control over resources beyond the reach of ordinary people, the United States, with its advanced medical technology, still had no cure for his illness, and the only Chinese doctor who could potentially cure him was currently unable to come to the United States. Ironically, the reason he couldn’t come could ultimately be traced back to Li Gaoyang himself; he had effectively set up obstacles to his own treatment, a cruel twist of fate indeed.
Li Gaoyang had already signed up for the waiting list at Sanbo Hospital Surgery Research Institute. Following the normal process, his surgery was scheduled for a year later, a time far too long for Li Gaoyang to wait.
If he didn’t undergo surgery, his life was already on a countdown. How could he possibly hold on for that long? He could undergo surgery immediately in the United States, but it was very clear that no American doctor could perform the surgery, and Professor Yang could not possibly come to the United States.
Sanbo Hospital, due to the BG Group’s breach of contract, had suffered huge losses with dozens of machines locked, which resulted in the hospital, in a fit of anger, revoking VIP medical access for Americans. However, for humanitarian reasons, they still kept the standard medical services open.
American patients, no matter who they were, could only join the queue in an orderly manner, unable to obtain VIP privileges that would allow for earlier surgery, by any means whatsoever.
John Ansen, Director of Neurosurgery at Mayo, expressed his regret and said he was unable to help; Sanbo Hospital had ended VIP access for Americans, and his personal connections were of no use. If VIP access had not been closed, he could have used his personal relationship with Professor Yang to help secure the VIP channel and arrange an earlier surgery.
"Isn’t there any other way to consider?"
Li Gaoyang now deeply understood the cautious thoughts of the older generation, each claiming that Professor Yang belonged to the whole world, making it seem like they were all philanthropists, hence safeguarding their personal backup plans. Who wouldn’t want to live a little longer? It turned out that the older ones were shrewder. Li Gaoyang should have understood this earlier, but he simply could not believe that these people would ultimately succumb to natural decay and disease.
"Is it possible to change my identity and name?"
Li Gaoyang never imagined he would be reduced to such a pathetic state, the chairman of the BG Consortium actually considering such a tactic.
John Ansen shook his head, "No, Professor Yang has a very good memory, especially for case data, which he remembers in extreme detail. I’ve shown him your images, and he’ll recognize them even if you change your identity. No matter what you change, the tumor in your brain remains the same. He’ll know it’s you the moment he sees it. If he finds out there’s been any deception, both you and I won’t be able to bear the consequences. You might end up having your surgery further delayed, or even lose the chance to seek medical treatment in China entirely, and I would never again have the opportunity to learn the world’s most advanced medical techniques."
To think that what should have been a straightforward matter had become so complicated, Li Gaoyang tried to stay calm, but found it impossible. This was a matter of life or death.
"Is there really no other way at all? Like, I could donate money to their hospital, or even give a huge fortune to Professor Yang personally." Li Gaoyang felt a touch of despair, hoping to grasp at the last straw, which, in this case, was not just a straw but a solid lifeline.
John Ansen shook his head again, with a smile, "Do you think someone like Professor Yang can be bought with money?"
Li Gaoyang fell silent; previously, to win him over, no offer was enticing enough to move him, and now, talking about money seemed impulsive.
"Alright, I’ll think it over." Li Gaoyang felt that there was no way forward through Doctor John Ansen.
With no other options, Li Gaoyang could only turn to Rolf, a man accustomed to doing things that couldn’t see the light of day, often mixing with those who do the dirty work. After all, in the interest of profit, over the years Rolf had not refrained from engaging in unscrupulous activities. But now, Yang Ping would go nowhere, and even if Li Gaoyang forcibly brought him to perform surgery, it wouldn’t work.
Rolf shook his head helplessly, "With further investigation from our intelligence, we’ve found Professor Yang’s security measures to be much stronger than we imagined. It might appear that he has just a few security personnel, but in fact, there is a powerful security system protecting him out of sight. To put it another way, while we watch others, they also watch us. Our actions are not entirely secret, and I’m sorry to say, the people I’ve dispatched may have already been exposed."
"Isn’t there another way? Like targeting people close to him?" Li Gaoyang could no longer hold back and voiced his thoughts. He had to survive; whatever method was the fastest and best, he had to use it.
Rolf shook his head, "If powers are unequal, such methods work. However, when the powers are equal or the adversary’s powers are stronger, such methods will only backfire. Our opponent could also attack us this way, leading to a loss of all restraint. The line we don’t cross isn’t shaped by moral factors, but by the balance of power, sometimes wars are controlled within bounds acceptable to both sides, such as not using nuclear weapons, let alone the fact that this isn’t a war."
After a moment of thought, Rolf said, "There is an old saying you might not have heard: the most effective response to assassination is assassination, either equal or one level higher."
Li Gaoyang calmed down and pondered over the statement, realizing that Rolf was right. He too had family, he too had weaknesses, and acting recklessly could lead to mutual destruction in the end.
"What do you suggest?"
Li Gaoyang asked sincerely. He and Rolf had been good friends for many years, their close cooperation had propelled BG Group forward vigorously. When it came to corporate management, he was an expert, but Rolf was the real master in navigating these complex social relationships. He had provided support beyond business for BG Group’s acquisitions or eliminations of other companies, known as sociological support.
"How about changing nationality? That should be a piece of cake for you," Rolf suggested.
Li Gaoyang said with some uncertainty, "I’ve heard Professor Yang has an incredible memory. Changing nationality doesn’t change the tumor in his brain. Could it be considered cheating, causing disruption in the medical order?"
As he spoke, Li Gaoyang felt a deep sadness. Seeking medical treatment had to be so carefully considered, afraid of offending anyone. He even doubted if he was still Li Gaoyang.
"Then there’s only one path left, to find Ruixing’s Huang and have a good talk, sincerely show weakness and apologize; maybe there’s a glimmer of hope."
Rolf stated calmly and objectively.
"Impossible!"
Li Gaoyang blurted out.
"Then you can only do this, to gradually waste away your life while waiting."
Rolf, not holding back, was someone who understood the importance of advance and retreat in sociological work.
"Let me think---will talking to Huang work?"
Li Gaoyang let out a sigh.
"It will work, he’s Professor Yang’s agent," Rolf asserted.
"Retreating is truly difficult for us."
Li Gaoyang found it very tough.
With a cunning smile, Rolf said, "Actually, you don’t really have to retreat. Pretend to do so, and after the surgery, once you’ve achieved your goal, immediately revert back to normal. This way, you can kill two birds with one stone. Not only can you complete the surgery, but you can also confuse the other party. Then, when they truly believe we’ve retreated, you can strike unexpectedly, and they’ll never foresee it."
Li Gaoyang’s eyes immediately gleamed, "Why didn’t I think of that? Yes, show weakness now and once recovered after surgery and we no longer depend on him, we can turn our backs on him. Isn’t any contract just a piece of paper?"
"You’re a clever guy," Li Gaoyang latched onto the idea. "Haven’t we often used and never failed with this method?"
"Cheers, we’ve truly mastered the essence, which is why we’re so prosperous. I wish you a speedy recovery."
"Cheers, let’s initiate the plan immediately: retreat and then advance, later to turn our backs."
