Chapter 1121: Chapter 901: I Can Also Perform This Surgery
Professor Chen Jianliang stood in front of the lightbox, discussing with Yang Ping.
Although he had retired, what interested him most was still his specialty. Having been a doctor all his life, he felt a sense of existence only when treating and saving lives. Engaging in other activities always left him without that feeling of existence, and the lack of it made him feel lost and empty, uncertain of the value of life.
Professor Chen now only saw outpatients and was basically not involved in surgeries. Although running an outpatient clinic meant he was still on the front line, as a surgeon, how could he endure it indefinitely? Over time, he inevitably felt lonely and isolated.
It was like a sniper on the battlefield who, although still at the front, no longer engaged in shooting enemies but squatted in defensive works, watching the battle through binoculars and collecting intelligence—naturally, it was hard to adapt to this change.
To regain that sense of existence, Professor Chen could only try to find opportunities to observe surgeries. Of course, he would not go up and get in the way of the young people; he simply wanted to feel the atmosphere in the operating room, participate in surgical discussions by giving a few comments, and then just watch the surgery from around the operating table.
That’s exactly what he was doing now, carefully choosing a spot to stand without intruding on everyone’s work.
"The blood vessels appear very fine, making the bypass quite difficult, yet without the bypass, we can’t relieve the current vascular obstruction. It’s hard to ensure the quality of the anastomosis with such fine vessels. How do you plan to do it?" Professor Chen asked.
Yang Ping nodded and said, "The blood vessels are indeed very fine, but that’s okay. There should be no big problem with bypassing vessels of this diameter; I often do bypasses on even finer vessels."
When blood vessel diameters are very fine, generally less than 1 millimeter, vascular bypass is not chosen and simpler procedures such as patch grafting are preferred because the finer the vessel, the higher the demands on vascular anastomosis skills. If the anastomosis skills are not up to par, postoperative vessel occlusion can occur, rendering the surgery futile.
However, if the level of vascular anastomosis is very high and there are no problems with vessel occlusion post-anastomosis, then bypassing can still be done on vessels smaller than 1 millimeter.
Professor Chen knew Yang Ping’s skills inside and out. As long as it was humanly possible, Yang Ping could achieve it; at least, in Professor Chen’s experience, Yang Ping was at the pinnacle of operating.
"After the bypass, are you planning on doing the grafting as well?" Professor Chen knew that Yang Ping would focus solely on the surgical outcome without regard to the difficulty.
"Double-barreled approach, employing both proximate and distal measures," replied Yang Ping.
Professor Chen stroked his chin and nodded slightly. With the surgery proceeding in this manner, it was beyond reproach, no doubt the most perfect plan.
Xixi was positioned supine for the surgery, her head fixed and slightly elevated, and the anesthesiologist Liang Fatty maintained her blood pressure slightly above her normal level.
Zhang Lin and Little Five completed the sterilization and draping, Yang Ping scrubbed in, and the patrolling nurse brought the microscope over in preparation; the surgery officially began.
It seemed that no one was in a hurry, but the surgery was not delayed at all.
In this emergency surgery, Yang Ping didn’t have time to explain while operating. He was focused solely on the task at hand, racing through the procedure. If he were to explain during such an emergency surgery, his speaking couldn’t keep up with his hands.
The only learning opportunity for the rest was to watch the synchronized surgical video, and then ask Professor Yang about anything unclear after the surgery.
Doctors Jin, Wen, and Xia Shu envied Zhang Lin and Little Five, wondering when they could handle the majority of surgeries like them and truly keep up with the pace of the Surgical Research Institute.
They were merely at the tail end of the team now. They used to be the elites in their own departments, but it was not until they came to the Surgical Research Institute that they realized they were actually outperformed by Zhang Lin and Little Five, who were considered the lowliest workers.
Fueled by a sense of shame and driven by determination, the three Doctors resolved to work hard to surpass Zhang Lin and Little Five. Of course, these two seemed to be the easiest to surpass; overtaking Song Zimo and Xu Zhiliang would be much more challenging.
Now they were watching the synchronous surgical video on the screen with utmost seriousness, not wanting to miss any detail of each surgery.
They realized how formidable the Surgical Research Institute’s training for doctors was. Given their foundations in such an environment, with such training, as long as they kept earnest and diligent, they were sure to achieve greatness in time.
What Zhang Lin and Little Five could do, they were convinced they could do as well, and go far beyond.
Previously, Doctor Jin felt he was too old at over 40 and had missed the prime time for training as a surgeon. Now, that thought had completely vanished, and he brimmed with enthusiasm and ambition.
Doctor Li Min, also present, had a revelation as to why Professor Yang so adamantly insisted on him learning anatomy through various methods and practicing basic skills.
Li Min previously had little awareness of neurosurgical diseases like Moyamoya disease, and even less understanding of how to perform the necessary surgeries.
Now he was not only familiar with such diseases but had also grown to understand the surgical principles and methods, thanks to his extensive anatomical knowledge and improved understanding of pathology and pathophysiology.
Even without Yang Ping’s guidance, or with just a hint from him, Li Min could grasp the surgical rationale and approach for such diseases.
In fact, if faced with such a case, he would dare to undertake the relatively simple patch graft surgery.
With a solid foundation, subsequent learning became much easier.
Yang Ping was silent, focused on the surgery, with Little Five and Zhang Lin assisting.
First was the vascular bypass. Yang Ping planned to bridge the superficial temporal artery with the middle cerebral artery, which was the most crucial part of the bypass.
Some bypasses could be done directly, while others required the use of a vascular graft.
