Chapter 1060: Chapter 869 The Story is Long_2
Chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, head and cervical spine MRI, along with electromyographs of the limbs.
Guided by the nurse’s note, Fang Liu pushed Lan Xueping along to find the respective departments for the tests.
The hospital was large and crowded, making it time-consuming to find their way.
However, Fang Liu was not in a hurry. He leisurely shared stories of famous historical sites and local customs from various parts of the country with Lan Xueping. He spoke with such relish as if he had visited all those places himself, when in fact, all his information was sourced from the internet. In preparation for taking Lan Xueping on a tour around the country, he had done his homework well in advance, striving to serve as a qualified "tour guide."
Since Fang Liu was indeed very handsome and had the charisma of a star, standing at 185 cm tall was also quite attractive; along the way, he occasionally caught the admiring glances of young girls. But Fang Liu didn’t pay much attention to all that. He was accustomed to it and focused solely on chatting with his beloved.
The first stop was the chest X-ray. Fang Liu submitted the examination request at the nurse station and then waited with Lan Xueping in the waiting area for their turn.
Next to the nurse’s station stood a signboard, roughly informing everyone that pregnant women or those planning pregnancy should not undergo X-rays and should leave the area quickly due to radiation, although lead doors and walls provided some protection, it wasn’t absolute.
Lan Xueping felt bitterly sorrowful in her heart. She had no chance of bearing children for Fang Liu, not only because of her own illness but also because of the high probability that any child they had might inherit her condition.
Fang Liu was truly foolish, hopelessly so—thinking about this made Lan Xueping’s eyes moisten. Sometimes, she genuinely wanted to leave everything behind, allowing Fang Liu to be free.
Once, she had attempted just that—she hid in a corner of the park in her wheelchair. Fang Liu, however, kept calling her and searching frantically everywhere. Hidden in her corner, she saw this tall man bawling, shouting her name heartbreakingly, oblivious to the astonished stares of passersby.
What was the point of all this suffering? Lan Xueping slowly emerged from the corner, her face streamed with tears, "Let’s go home!"
Let’s love passionately!
Seeing his fiancée’s eyes, both red and wet, Fang Liu knew Lan Xueping, this kind-hearted girl, was sentimental and especially vulnerable since her illness. He saw it all and without speaking out, he tried everything possible to cheer her up and relieve her worries.
Lan Xueping realized she was somewhat losing her composure and quickly adjusted her emotions. She also tried to appear optimistic and happy, as she didn’t want to bring any negativity to Fang Liu.
Actually, the story of Fang Liu and Lan Xueping was a long one. They were from the same village when they were children, even neighbors. Back then, Lan Xueping was not ill, nor was her father, who, due to diligent parents, made their family quite prosperous in the village standards.
Fang Liu, however, was different. His father was a gambler, who had squandered the family’s fortunes and remained unrepentant until he disappeared altogether—rumored to have been killed by creditors, but that was merely speculation. By elementary school, Fang Liu was fatherless.
Later, his mother ran away with a pig trader and never returned, leaving Fang Liu essentially an orphan, raised by his elderly grandfather.
Thus, Fang Liu’s childhood was painful, often barely managing a meal to eat—not because his grandfather didn’t care, but because of his old age, maintaining food and clothing was already quite an accomplishment.
His neighbor, Lan Xueping, was in the same class as him. She would always claim she couldn’t finish her meal and hated to waste it, insisting on sharing half with him. Fang Liu, caring about his pride, would refuse, but Lan Xueping would force him to accept, chiding him for not helping her, saying it wasn’t very manly of him.
It wasn’t just sharing meals—Lan Xueping often gave snacks to Fang Liu too, sometimes oranges or apples, sometimes dried sweet potatoes, and sometimes candies.
By the time they reached junior high, Fang Liu’s feelings for Lan Xueping had gradually deepened.
He felt grateful, but later realized it wasn’t just gratitude but genuine affection that he had never confessed to anyone.
Because he thought it wasn’t right to fall for her given how kindly she treated him, and with his family situation and his poor academic performance, while Lan Xueping excelled in her studies and would possibly attend Normal University to become a teacher, destined for a wonderful future.
So, he had always silently adored Lan Xueping but had never confessed his feelings, not even hinting at them, always deeply burying his love in his own heart.
During ninth grade, a school bully took a liking to Lan Xueping and wrote her love letters, which Lan Xueping ignored.
Consequently, the school bully harbored a grudge, and with a few thuggish students, he ambushed Lan Xueping at the dormitory entrance. This frightened Lan Xueping for days. When Fang Liu found out, he severely beat up the school bully. Since Fang Liu was tall and struck with a desperate fierceness, his eyes bloodshot, the bully was utterly scared and never dared to harass Lan Xueping again.
In high school, Fang Liu and Lan Xueping were at the same school—Secondary School No. 2 in the county. However, Lan Xueping was in the honors class, and Fang Liu was in a regular class.
Actually, based on Fang Liu’s usual grades, he shouldn’t have been able to get into Secondary School No. 2. But he exerted himself in the last year of junior high, tackling his studies with intense determination, and his grades made a remarkable turnaround, finally allowing him to enter a regular class at Secondary School No. 2.
His sole purpose in doing this was to stay close to Lan Xueping, to never let her be frightened again.
But throughout high school, they had little contact, each living their own lives. Fang Liu only watched over Lan Xueping from a distance, never actively disturbing her.
After high school graduation, Lan Xueping got into Normal University, but Fang Liu’s grandfather passed away in his senior year. With no more relatives left, and after flunking the College Entrance Examination, he went through a period of grief. However, he quickly recovered and decided to enlist in the military, joining the armed police forces that year.
Later, he ended up in the firefighting brigade in Nandu Provincial City, remaining there until now.
Even as Lan Xueping attended university, Fang Liu continued to pay attention to her. Through various means, Fang Liu added her on WeChat, but they never actually talked. Lan Xueping also rarely posted moments.
Until later on, suffering from illness, the death of family members, the loss of jobs, a series of blows, and worsening symptoms, Lan Xueping could no longer suppress the anguish in her heart. She posted a moment, just wanting to vent her inner turmoil. Little did she know that this moment would prompt Fang Liu to cross mountains and rivers to pick her up.
"Did you really resign?"
Lan Xueping had always disagreed with Fang Liu resigning. She felt that Fang Liu should not change his life for her.
She knew Fang Liu wanted to show her the world outside, but that was just something said in jest, and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Yet, to her surprise, Fang Liu was serious.
Fang Liu nodded, "I have one more month left at work. Don’t worry, I’m prepared. These past two years I’ve been apprenticing and learning a craft, so wherever I go, I won’t starve."
Lan Xueping knew the "craft" that Fang Liu was talking about involved performing hard qigong stunts, like steel bars against the throat, wire around the neck, or driving nails with hands. In fact, these were all perilous, grueling tasks.
Fang Liu was very smart and learned things quickly. Thus, he excelled at these performances. Coupled with his good looks and eloquence, he was suited for street performances.
He once took Lan Xueping to the park to perform as a test and managed to earn some tips. However, seeing him perform made Lan Xueping extremely anxious, feeling deep sympathy for Fang Liu.
This was Fang Liu’s backup plan. Savings would run out eventually, so learning a variety of tricks allowed for earning money through performances while traveling.
The called number appeared on the screen indicating it was Lan Xueping’s turn, and Fang Liu immediately wheeled Lan Xueping in.
Because she couldn’t stand to have her chest X-rayed, she had to lie down, which posed a significant challenge in positioning her body. Even after taking medication before the exam to control her symptoms, the trembling of her body made it impossible for Lan Xueping to maintain the needed position.
Fang Liu stayed by Lan Xueping’s side, helping her stabilize her position.
