Chapter 258 - 258: Meeting with the military

"Come out, — Idan said, immediately after summoning Ned out of his star.

Ned, who had already assumed the form of a young man with brown hair and green eyes, appeared in front of Idan with a satisfied smile on his face.

"I see you liked it?" asked Idan.

"Yes, young master," Ned replied, and Idan had to restrain himself from hitting Ned on the head.

Then, without saying a word, Idan continued on his way to the city. Ned, still full of joy and satisfaction, followed his master, carefully scanning the surroundings in search of the little fox. But to his surprise, he did not find her.

Shrugging his shoulders, Ned continued to walk beside Idan in silence, without further ado.

Their way to the city followed the same route that Krause's group had taken. Soon, Idan noticed the signs of Ned's attack in the form of a spiked wolf.

By the time they reached this place, the military from the city was already there, examining the effects of the beast's attack and collecting the remains of the victims.

"Stop!" one of the soldiers shouted, noticing Idan and Ned. He pointed a gun at them and, attracting the attention of the others, said these words loudly. The military reacted instantly, readying their weapons for battle.

"I am Sgt Novak, the commander of the squad tasked with assessing the situation in the area. Who are you?" the soldier who came forward introduced himself. Behind him stood a short girl with short black hair, warmly dressed. Half of her face was wrapped in a black scarf, but her eyes studied Idan and Ned with interest.

Idan immediately realized that the girl was "awakened" and was probably here to assess the situation and at the same time serve as a protector for these military men.

"Ethan Goldwing, a Golden-ranked awakened one," Idan replied calmly, taking out his awakened identity card.

"Awakened?" said Sgt Novak in surprise. Although he had assumed that the awakened ones were standing in front of him, upon hearing Idan's confirmation and rank, he couldn't contain his surprise.

The awakened girl was also surprised, but she immediately came to her senses and stood silently behind the sergeant.

Taking the ID card from Idan's hand, Novak pulled a small device out of his pocket and used it to swipe over the document. The color turned green on the screen, and seeing this, the sergeant relaxed slightly.

The device showed that the certificate was genuine.

"I'm sorry," Novak said, handing the ID back to Idan. "Recently, we have seen more frequent cases of forgery of awakened identity cards. Some people try to pretend to be awakened in order to gain access to privileges that do not belong to them."

"I understand your concern," Idan replied, taking his ID back. "Let me introduce you to my subordinate Ned. He's also an awakened one, but he hasn't registered with the association yet."

After hearing these words, Ned, following Idan's orders through their contract, pulled out his ID card. Idan and Arabel prepared it for him after visiting the city during their journey, assuming that Ned would follow them in the future. Arabel also wanted to make a certificate for Bera, but they decided to postpone this issue until they returned to the capital.

"Ned Fein?" — Novak read Ned's ID card and swiped his device over it again to verify its authenticity. As Idan and Ned expected, the light turned green, confirming that Ned's ID card was valid.

"There is a branch of the Association in this city, so I strongly recommend that you register," Novak said, handing the ID back to Ned. Ned just nodded back, not saying a word.

"We will definitely do it," Idan replied instead of Ned, a little annoyed by his silence.

Novak gave the signal, and the military finally lowered their weapons, returning to their duties.

"Mr. Ethan, you can wait until we're done here and join us when we head back to town," Novak suggested.

"Okay, we'll wait," Idan agreed. Following Novak and the silent girl, he assessed the results of Ned's actions.

"And who is this?" asked Idan, paying attention to the girl.

"Milla, the Awakened One. Gold rank," the girl briefly introduced herself.

Idan nodded at her and, returning his gaze to Novak, asked:

"What happened here?"

"An unknown evolved beast of the golden rank attacked the convoy," Novak replied respectfully to Idan, making sure that the second real awakened one was standing in front of him, as was the young girl Milla, who was assigned to his squad.

"Only one person survived, and that was because he was an awakened one."

"Kraus?" said Idan with interest.

Hearing Idan's question, Novak and the girl named Milla were surprised.

"Do you know him?" asked Novak.

"Yes, we had a little conflict with his group recently," Idan answered honestly. Then, looking at the remains of the men's bodies, he asked without much expression, "So it's them?"

"It's probably them," Novak replied, after which he immediately asked the question, he was interested in: "Could you tell me how and under what circumstances you met? And what kind of conflict did you have?"

"We just intervened while they were having fun shooting at defenseless animals," Idan said and briefly outlined the essence of what had happened. He also mentioned that an ambush was organized against him, but after it failed, the shooter disappeared.

Idan deliberately revealed the conflict with this group, knowing that Kraus would share information about the meeting with them anyway. There was no point in hiding the truth, and denial might seem strange.

"Do you know who set up the ambush on you?" asked Novak.

Idan did not answer this question.

Novak and the girl were not naive and immediately suspected that, most likely, it was these dead people who organized the ambush on these two.

The military quickly completed an assessment of the situation and collected all the remains of the dead and the snowmobile. They loaded them into a special all-terrain vehicle, which was designed to move around the area.

Soon after, an all-terrain vehicle and several snowmobiles set off, heading towards the city. Along the way, they met with other squads who were completing assessments at other sites, and joined together to form a small column.

After completing all the procedures, the convoy continued moving towards the city. They easily overcame the military posts set up around the city and stopped at a large military base.

"Here we are," Novak said when the all-terrain vehicle stopped. "Mr. Ethan and Mr. Ned, please follow us and give evidence for a short report."

"Okay," Idan agreed, while Ned showed little interest in the suggestion.

After getting out of the all-terrain vehicle, Idan began to examine the military base with undisguised curiosity.

Idan was a young man who had not yet completed his military service. Like many men, he was passionate about military equipment and weapons. Seeing the many uniformed soldiers and various military equipment in front of him, Idan couldn't help but be surprised. Even after becoming awakened, he looked around with excitement.

"This way," Novak called Idan, distracting him from exploring the military base.

"The security of this city is very different from where we were before," said Idan.

"Yes, that's right. This city is located on the border, and unlike other cities located in the interior of the Federation, it, like the rest of the cities on the borders, is often attacked by beasts due to its distance from the Capital," Novak replied.

Idan roughly understood what Novak wanted to say.

Cities located closer to the capital did not need such protection, as the main forces of the Federation are concentrated in this area. In the event of an attack, the military and the awakened can quickly respond to the threat. Unlike border towns, which are located at a distance from the main forces, they initially have a stronger defense system.
