Chen Fan looked towards the window-side seating, seeking the person he was supposed to meet based on the features Wang Suyun had described: uniform, short skirt, brown hair, glasses. His eyes quickly landed on Yuan Lin.

However, seeing a man sitting next to Yuan Lin, Chen Fan felt a slight confusion and approached, asking, "Hello, excuse me, are you Yuan Lin?"

Yuan Lin glanced at Chen Fan with a hint of disdain, yet she nodded.

"I’m Chen Fan, my mom asked me to meet you," Chen Fan said.

Yuan Lin replied with an awkward, "Please, have a seat."

Chen Fan sat down opposite them and asked, looking at Fang Shuo, "And who might this be?"

Yuan Lin explained, "Oh, don’t misunderstand, this is my male best friend, Fang Shuo. He came with me."

Chen Fan nodded, not commenting, but inwardly, he held a hint of contempt for the term "male best friend."

Men know men’s thoughts best. He didn’t believe that a man who is a woman’s best friend truly only wanted to be just that.

Of course, he was only there to go through the motions, so however the other party was, it didn’t matter to him.

Fang Shuo eyed Chen Fan, a trace of disdain in his gaze, and then extended a hand, offering a handshake.

Chen Fan shook his hand politely, and when he tried to pull his hand away, he found that the other man had not let go.

Fang Shuo said with a smile, "Buddy, actually, I’m here today to screen guys for Linlin, considering this is about choosing a lifelong partner; can’t be too careful. Linlin is a girl who lacks a sense of security, so she prefers strong men. A man who doesn’t even have the strength to protect his woman is definitely not going to be admired by any woman, right?"

As he spoke, he tightened his grip on Chen Fan’s hand, as if trying to crush it.

Chen Fan sneered inwardly and began to exert force in response.

The smile on Fang Shuo’s face quickly stiffened, and then his brows furrowed, slowly turning into an expression of pain.

He tried to withdraw his hand, only to find it clamped tightly, immovable no matter how hard he tried.

Chen Fan, with an indifferent expression, said, "You’re absolutely right. Without strength, one is bound to be bullied, correct?"

Fang Shuo forced a pained smile and said, "Yes, yes, well, can we let go now?"

Only then did Chen Fan release his hand, saying, "Sorry, I got a bit carried away with your talk."

Fang Shuo looked at his "purple chicken claw" hand, his face contorted with unpleasantness, and he quickly tucked it under the table to rub it.

Yuan Lin, with a face full of surprise, hadn’t expected Fang Shuo to be bested. Anger crept onto her face as she shouted at Chen Fan, "Hey, are you sick? Why did you do that to Shuo’s hand? Don’t you know that hurts him!"

Yuan Lin, furious, retorted, "Who shakes hands like that? You’re being completely unreasonable!"

Chen Fan responded, speechless, "Then why don’t you say he was the one who provoked me first?"

Yuan Lin yelled, "What do you mean, provoked you? You’re so irrational! Shuo was just being polite with that handshake; he didn’t do anything wrong. On the other hand, you’re just being rude and bully-ish. Let me tell you, my first impression of you couldn’t be worse!"

She turned her head towards Fang Shuo and asked with concern, "Shuo, are you alright? Let me rub it for you."

Fang Shuo said with an embarrassed, "It’s alright, no problem."

Yuan Lin turned to look at Chen Fan and said, "As a man, you come on a blind date with me, not bothering to make a good impression is one thing, but bullying my friend too, how am I supposed to consider you?"

Chen Fan shrugged and replied, "Then don’t consider me. I just came to meet you because my mom told me to."

Yuan Lin curled her lip and said, "At least you’re self-aware, knowing that someone like you will never catch my eye. Since that’s the case, let’s just call it a meal."

Chen Fan nodded, "Fine by me."

Just then, a waiter came over with a cart, upon which were placed all sorts of expensive dishes like abalone, lobster, and shark fin.

Yuan Lin glanced at Chen Fan and said, "Since you were late, Fang Shuo and I just casually ordered some dishes. Take a look and see if you want to add anything."

Chen Fan watched as the waiter set up a whole table full of dishes, all of which were the most expensive, and thought to himself that she seemed to have misunderstood the meaning of ’casually ordered’.

At that moment, a thought suddenly popped into his head, "She couldn’t possibly be planning to fleece me, could she?"

Even though the dishes on the table were quite expensive, they weren’t much different from regular home-cooked meals for Chen Fan now.

However, being wealthy and being foolish were two different things, and he had no interest in letting others take him for a ride.

So he just sat there, without touching his chopsticks.

Yuan Lin and Fang Shuo, of course, didn’t care whether Chen Fan ate or not. They were eating with great gusto, and Yuan Lin even passed dishes to Fang Shuo, "Shuo Shuo, eat more oysters, they’re good for your health."

Looking at this scene, Chen Fan felt disdainful, thinking to himself that she was so close to this guy, so why didn’t she just marry him instead of going on blind dates?

Because they ordered so much food, they only took a bite or two of each dish.

Then she waved the waiter over and said, "Check, please."

The waiter immediately brought over the bill and said, "Your total comes to thirty-eight thousand two hundred and ten yuan."

Yuan Lin raised her eyebrows, thinking that the meal was really expensive, costing more than thirty thousand yuan; it was the most expensive meal she’d ever had in her life.

She looked up at Chen Fan, then handed him the bill, saying, "Time to pay."

Chen Fan laughed, "You pay. Why are you giving it to me?"

Yuan Lin glared at him and said, "What do you mean? You came on a blind date with me, and after the meal, you expect me to pay? Are you even a man? Besides, you ate too, why should I pay?"

Chen Fan replied, "Don’t talk nonsense, I haven’t eaten a single bite of these dishes, I haven’t even touched the chopsticks."

Fang Shuo looked at Chen Fan and said, "Dude, that’s not cool. When a man goes out to eat with a woman, it’s definitely the man who pays the bill. Acting like this makes others look down on our fellow men."

Chen Fan looked at him and said, "Then why don’t you pay? Aren’t you a man? Plus, most of the dishes here were eaten by you."

Fang Shuo’s face turned red with anger, and he was at a loss for words.

Thirty-eight thousand yuan, that was several months’ salary for him; how could he possibly bear to spend that much on a single meal, especially since he came today with Yuan Lin to fleece a sucker, naturally, he wasn’t going to pay the bill.

Yuan Lin looked at Chen Fan with gritted teeth, and after a moment’s thought, she suddenly stood up and shouted, "Don’t tell me you’re acting this way because you’re too poor to afford the meal, and that’s why you’re making a scene here?"
