Chapter 2040: Why should I even keep you in my Council?
"Lady Sharnoth."
Varys walked into the Council Meeting. It was a sight that had become much more common in the Council, so much so that the Council Members did not even bat an eye at his entrance.
Not just the Council Members, Varys himself seemed to have gotten used to it. Heck, he had even stopped bothering with constantly reporting the fall of different worlds every single day.
Ten worlds from their Faction falling every single day had become a monotonous trend, something that Varys would rather have his subordinate report than waste time himself.
The reason he came here was something different,
Something bigger.
"Vladnir has declared neutrality."
He reported, and in an instant, the unbothered Council Members reacted.
"Vladnir...?"
Their expressions turned grim, even Sharnoth was no exception. This was even bigger than the first time a Lowest Level World had decided to abandon their faction.
Yes, with Nux constantly targeting the worlds belonging to their faction, it was only a matter of time before the word spread.
The aid Sharnoth had prepared didn’t work either. Everything she had done, from forming the portals, infesting the worlds’ energy with chaos, and sending her subordinates to different worlds, nothing had worked.
The subordinates they sent were all killed because the enemies were stronger. Even the stronger party, which consisted of Transcendents and was meant to target Nux’s wives, did not come back.
Let alone catching his wives, it seemed that those people ended up becoming a target instead, as more and more worlds with the Transcendent Level reinforcements started being attacked.
Of course, Sharnoth did try to use this opportunity and go together with the reinforcement in order to catch Nux or his wives, but every time she did it, Khaemorr was attacked instead, and she was forced to return.
Yes, even when she had used Chaos energy to prevent Nux from being able to sense anything inside Khaemorr, he knew exactly when she was gone.
Meaning there were spies working for him in Khaemorr.
Sharnoth was betrayed.
And what’s worse?
She could not find the traitor.
It was frustrating.
Not just that, since things had gotten this bad and Sharnoth’s large-scale operation of defending the worlds under her had failed so miserably, the matter regarding Nux and the Leander Family had spread like fire as well.
Almost every world under her Faction found out about them, and very quickly, panic spread. So much so that on a certain day, one of the Lowest Level Worlds declared neutrality, breaking all ties with Khaemorr.
Yes, the Lowest Level World went ahead and broke all ties with a High-Level World. It was something that had never happened in the history of the Universe.
Yet...
Now it had happened.
The matter attracted a lot of attention. The Lowest World itself gathered a lot of attention as well. Many thought it would soon be targeted and destroyed, but...
It survived.
The Leander Family did not attack because it had no connection with Khaemorr anymore. They even left a note mentioning the world’s name, ensuring they would not target them.
One would think that Khaemorr should have destroyed that world instead, but Sharnoth had a reputation to maintain as well. She couldn’t exactly destroy the world just because it left its Faction and cut all ties with them—at least not in the open.
The rest of the Powers didn’t bother. They were very much satisfied by being simple observers of this interesting game.
The Lowest Level World had ensured its survival, at least for now.
And that was all the push the others needed.
A week after that, more and more Lowest and then Low-Level Worlds started breaking ties with Khaemorr, abandoning the Faction.
It was something Sharnoth didn’t pay much attention to. It was regrettable, yes, but it wasn’t like the Lowest or Low-Level Worlds held that much importance. They were weak. They had no role in the bigger scheme of things, other than serving as cannon fodder.
Now, however, things were different.
Vladnir wasn’t a Lowest or Low-Level World,
It was a Middle-Level World.
And in the battle between High-Level Worlds and their Factions, the Middle-Level Worlds matter a lot.
If the fact that a Middle-Level World has left the Faction spreads...
More and more Middle-Level Worlds will start leaving, and while one wouldn’t make much difference, if the number continues to increase...
Then Aurendor would definitely find a way to use it to their advantage.
This... was bad.
"Why?"
Maeve questioned.
"Why did Vladnir declare neutrality? Did they give any reason?"
"They did not."
Varys shook his head.
"This isn’t a coincidence. The Leander Family started targeting Middle Level Worlds four days ago and now they have left. Even a child could tell what’s happening here."
Siara commented.
"Can you blame them? Eight Middle-Level Worlds under us have perished, and in exchange, we haven’t gotten our hands on anything.
The only time we ’succeeded’ was when Lady Sharnoth captured one of the Leander Family’s subordinates, but when we tried to read his memory, we only saw a blank.
The bastard did not remember anything. Even his cultivation had magically disappeared. It was almost as if he was abandoned by the very Universe."
Maeve then glanced at Sharnoth and,
"I have said it before, I will say it again, Your Majesty.
They need to be stopped.
If this continues, things will take a worse, far worse turn."
The Nocthari spoke with a solemn tone and this time, none of the Council Members said anything against her words.
They all realized how dire the situation was.
Even Sharnoth.
The Queen looked into Maeve’s eyes and,
"And how do you suggest I do that?"
She questioned. Her voice was full of coldness and intimidation she rarely displayed.
Maeve, however, wasn’t affected by that gaze.
"I do not know."
She merely shook her head.
"So you do not know?"
"I do not."
"That’s quite an easy answer, don’t you think?
You have been constantly telling me how I need to deal with him, yet never once did you suggest anything useful. Doesn’t that make you useless?
Why should I even keep you in my Council?"
