Chapter 633 - 633: Carnage!
The first wave was easily slaughtered by Nox. However, the demons were insane with bloodlust. From behind the gates, reinforcements poured out like rats. Their cries filled the air.
With a cold, bloodthirsty look on his face, he charged forward.
"Divine Velocity!"
As soon as he activated his skill, he shot forward like a streak of golden lightning, phasing past a lunging demon and appearing behind it—Glacier's End cleaving through its spine without resistance.
Another lunged.
He caught its arm, twisted, and froze it solid in one move.
Another tried to crush him with a hammer fist.
He ducked, stabbed upward, and let a jagged rocky spear erupt from the ground beneath the demon, impaling it through the jaw.
It was a massacre.
To the demons, it was supposed to be a slaughter… but they were the ones being hunted.
"Y-You monsters, surround him!" one of the higher-ranking demons roared, pale with fear.
Dozens of demon hounds appeared, leaping at him from all sides.
He raised his palm, and a burst of purple flames erupted.
The powerful fire consumed the demons mid-air. They couldn't even scream—turning to ash instantly.
A few demons tried to sneak up from the rear. However, with a wave of his sword, an ice shockwave exploded from the blade.
BOOM!
The shockwave slammed them into the ground like insects beneath a boot.
Cracks formed in the cobblestones beneath his feet.
They stared in horror.
The high-ranking demon screamed, charging forward with a massive cleaver.
"FOR VOM!!!"
Nox caught the blade mid-swing—with his bare hand.
CRACK!
The weapon shattered.
The demon's expression froze in disbelief.
Then, Glacier's End pierced straight through its heart, and its body froze over instantly.
The others began to back away.
Some dropped their weapons.
Some ran.
He didn't chase.
Instead, he looked up at the high walls of the Royal Island's entrance.
He could feel it.
A heavy, boiling presence looming across the bridge.
"Don't want to come out?" he smirked. "No worries, I'll force you out!"
Inside the Academy, the trio had successfully avoided two battalions of demons rushing towards the front gate.
While heading toward the kitchen, they soon encountered a third wave marching outside.
They quickly hid inside an empty classroom. Nyx peeped out through the door crack.
"Why are they all rushing in that direction?"
"Something is most likely happening outside," Theo mumbled under his breath, moving toward one of the windows and glancing out from the second floor.
Sure enough, he saw a sea of demons rushing out. He narrowed his eyes, trying to look beyond—then he heard it.
He could vaguely make out the sounds of explosions, shouting, and the occasional demonic roars.
"Guys, I think… someone is fighting the demons."
When they heard this, Nyx and Jack rushed over. Indeed, a fierce fight seemed to be raging in the distance. The only thing they could make out from their vantage point was the cries of demons and their body parts flying into the air.
"Whatever is fighting them is pretty powerful," Jack's eyes flashed. "But I'm certain, by the time Vom gets there, they won't have an easy time."
"Do you think they're coming to save us?" Nyx asked, staring into the distance.
"I don't know," Theo sighed. "But at this rate, only a god can save us."
"Regardless," Jack's voice suddenly turned serious, "we'll use this distraction to our advantage."
With the hallway cleared, they dashed out of the classroom.
Jack took the lead, whispering sharply, "Stick close. We don't know how long this distraction will last."
Their boots barely made a sound on the once polished floors of the academy. Since the demons had turned it into one of their bases, the grand Academy was now desecrated. Some of the fancy portraits and statues had been ripped down.
In place of the decorations, a demonic statue the demons referred to as Volgrat had been placed.
The citizens were still unaware that the reason they were losing the war was the presence of Volgrat, who was empowering the demons.
The group passed one of the statues. Nyx's eyes met the demonic, glowing eyes of Volgrat—and a chilling light appeared on her face.
"Everything started going south when that useless king introduced these statues," she mumbled under her breath.
Tapping into her Paladin class, she summoned a ball of holy flames and was about to destroy the statue—but held back just in time.
She knew that destroying it would make too much noise and attract patrolling demons.
Gritting her teeth, she activated a movement skill and continued forward.
One thing left untouched were the flickering torches. No matter how crude and barbaric they were, even vermin needed light to survive.
The flickering flames gave off just enough light for Nyx to spot the path to the service corridor.
"I see it," she whispered, pointing to a half-open archway.
Theo nodded. "The kitchen and storage are just beyond that wall. Let's go—fast."
They slipped through the narrow corridor, avoiding the broken glass littering the floor.
They turned a corner.
Nyx froze mid-step—so did the others.
A lone demon stood at the hallway junction, its back to them, watching the distant chaos through a crack in the wall.
"Damn!" Theo sucked in a deep breath. "What do we do?"
"Fight it," Nyx whispered. "It's just one. We can handle it swiftly without making noise."
Theo raised a finger to his lips and slowly unsheathed his jewel-encrusted sword.
But Jack raised a hand and pointed to the opposite side.
Their eyes snapped in that direction, where they saw another passage.
"We go around," he mouthed.
The two nodded, and they moved quickly and quietly, bypassing the lone demon.
Finally, they arrived at the kitchen doors.
