Chapter 318: Chapter 319: Where the Wails of the Old are Heard
Ye Lunfei took off his trench coat to reveal the short-sleeve shorts he was wearing underneath. His short golden hair seemed to glow, accentuating his handsome face. He flashed a bright smile and the air was immediately filled with a sunny and cheerful vibe as he said with energy:
"Hello everyone! I just got back from the Arctic and I’m having a bit of trouble adjusting to the temperature of Imperial City. It’s been so long since I’ve seen this many people in the Arctic where I was constantly blown by the cold wind, I almost forgot what warmth felt like, so seeing you all makes me so happy."
His smile was incredibly sincere and earnest, as if it could warm the depths of one’s heart.
Ye Lunfei casually sat down next to Sheng Yan, slinging an arm around his shoulders with no restraint and said, "Feel free to eat, this meal is on me!"
Sheng Yan glanced at him and said, "The whole restaurant is yours, offering to treat us like this hardly seems sincere."
Ye Lunfei pondered for a moment before his face broke into his trademark radiant smile again, his golden hair shining brightly, almost like a warm-hearted and fluffy golden retriever, making one itch to stroke it.
"How about we continue drinking at the PUB later?"
Dong Qiin’s eyes lit up, almost nodding her head in agreement right away.
However, it wasn’t up to her to decide. Sheng Yan was not interested in Ye Lunfei’s suggestion and refused, "Jinxia has to rest tomorrow."
Ye Lunfei said with a grin, "Rest is even better, then, a night-long party tonight!"
Dong Qiin’s dim eyes instantly brightened again.
Sheng Yan looked at him and said slowly, word by word, "What she needs is quality, adequate rest."
Seeing Sheng Yan’s unmoved demeanor, Ye Lunfei’s whole face drooped, looking particularly pitiful and wronged, his voice lacking its previous sunny cheer.
"Alright then, we’ll have to find another time."
Such an expression was simply irresistible, igniting a surge of maternal affection!
Dong Qiin wished she could rush over and hug Ye Lunfei, comforting him by rubbing his head. Even He Jinxia was a bit charmed, unable to hold back she started to say:
"Actually..."
She had only uttered the first two words when both Ye Lunfei and Sheng Yan turned to look at her.
One pair of eyes was bright and expectant, like a big dog begging for affection, while the other was... completely expressionless.
He Jinxia suddenly felt a sense of crisis and quickly changed her tune, "Actually, Sheng Yan is right because I’m scheduled to shoot a reality show in four days and I need to be well-rested to handle the physical activities in it."
Sheng Yan uttered a light "hmm," the corners of his mouth curling up slightly in pleasure, and his expression softened.
Ye Lunfei looked at Sheng Yan, then at He Jinxia, and couldn’t help but give a chuckle, shaking his head as he said, "They only envy the new smiling faces, never the old ones weeping."
Before the others could grasp the meaning of his words, Zhang Ming was already staring intently at Ye Lunfei, his gaze fixed on the hand resting on Sheng Yan’s shoulder—
Dead. Staring.
After being stared at for a long time by Zhang Ming, Ye Lunfei felt as if his hand was cursed, goosebumps sprouting all over it.
He quickly took his hand off Sheng Yan’s shoulder, rubbed it with his other hand, and glared at Zhang Ming, flaring up, "Enough already, I won’t touch your artist anymore, okay? Stop staring at my hand, that gaze is creepy!"
Zhang Ming hummed lightly and turned his head away without a word.
Ye Lunfei was close to Sheng Yan, so he often interacted with him, and Zhang Ming, who couldn’t stand his brother-like "intimacy," scrutinized Ye Lunfei whenever he touched Sheng Yan.
Staring intently until he made the person feel chills down their spine, Zhang Ming wouldn’t let up until Ye Lunfei moved his hand away and deliberately distanced himself from Sheng Yan.
Ye Lunfei was a regular victim of his gaze, yet he persistently challenged Zhang Ming by consciously moving closer to Sheng Yan to develop the "Divine Skill" of not being afraid of being stared at, but each time, he ended up retreating, leaving himself feeling a cold shiver.
Dong Qiin couldn’t help but ask, "Are you two..."
Ye Lunfei looked over, his face breaking into a radiant smile, extending his hand, "Hello, I’m Ye Lunfei, nice to meet you for the first time. Please take good care of me in the future."
Tsk, to think someone who’s 29 could still manage to act all youthful without any hint of discord, just like a sunny and cheerful big boy.
Dong Qiin, a director who had "seen countless stars," happened to be Ye Lunfei’s little fangirl, having followed him obsessively since her college days.
Now that her idol was right before her in the flesh, she felt an unusual shyness take over. She reached out and gave his hand a firm shake, stammering out a greeting, "Hello."
Xiao Xiuxiu wasn’t a fan of Ye Lunfei, though, having been constantly nagged about him by Dong Qiin, she was somewhat familiar with him. She greeted him with interest, "Hello, I’m the screenplay writer Xiao Xiuxiu, and she’s the director Dong Qiin."
At last, she added, "We all know Jinxia and Sheng Yan."
Ye Lunfei was somewhat surprised, his eyes briefly flicking to Sheng Yan as if to ask, How come I wasn’t aware you had these friends?
As he busied himself ladling up some mutton, cooking it until just done before promptly serving it into Jinxia’s bowl, Sheng Yan explained slowly, "Dong Qiin’s elders are familiar with my parents, and our families have had some interaction. Xiao Xiuxiu and Dong Qiin have a good relationship with Jinxia, and since everyone is in Imperial City, we just decided to get together."
Ye Lunfei understood now, and facing the puzzled looks of Dong Qiin and Xiao Xiuxiu, he said with a smile, "What a coincidence, I’m also friends with Sheng Yan, but we met in the industry."
Sheng Yan gave him a brief glance, his gaze distant, and said nothing.
Upon hearing this, He Jinxia looked at Sheng Yan, her eyes equally full of deep meaning.
Sheng Yan had previously told her that Ye Lunfei also knew Dong Qiin and Xiao Xiuxiu, but judging from the present situation, it was clear that they did not know each other.
It seemed that Sheng Yan had made up the connection on the spot to put her at ease, so she wouldn’t feel nervous.
After giving it a brief thought, He Jinxia didn’t dwell on the matter any further and instead turned her attention to the big white cabbage in the spicy pot.
The green and fresh cabbage slowly floated to the surface of the red broth, boiled to an intensely spicy state, and absorbed a full dose of the spicy juice.
Upon biting into it, the abundant spiciness would burst forth, filling the entire mouth, offering an incomparable exhilarating spicy delight.
Jinxia could handle spicy food but didn’t particularly favor chili peppers, except for the "spicy cabbage" in hotpot, which she adored.
Even if the first bite made her cough violently and brought tears to her eyes, she couldn’t give up on this spicy cabbage.
Someone said "it’s ready," and Jinxia blinked and immediately reached for her chopsticks, intending to grab some from the pot. However, before her chopsticks could even touch the pot, her wrist was caught by the man beside her.
He Jinxia tried to reach but couldn’t.
She tried harder, still to no avail.
Turning her head towards Sheng Yan, her eyes were filled with confusion and a hint of a watery grievance.
Sheng Yan immediately understood her intent, but his grip remained firm as he said in a low voice, "Your period is about to start."
He Jinxia looked confused.
Sheng Yan continued, "You should start avoiding certain foods a few days before it arrives, otherwise, you’ll have abdominal pain when it does."
His dark eyes regarded her as if they contained a vast starry sky, and his deep voice brimmed with tenderness.
"Your menstruation cycle is already a bit irregular, so you really need to take care of it properly, which includes dietary restrictions."
Now He Jinxia understood.
She hadn’t eaten anything spicy, yet she found herself choked up, a warmth spreading from her heart to every corner of her body, tremblingly spicy as if her cheeks were aflame.
"Cough, cough cough..."
They were already sitting close together, and as they spoke in hushed tones, they leaned even closer to one another.
Although the gazes of Dong Qiin and the others were captured by Ye Lunfei, they turned back at the sound of Jinxia’s harsh coughing. They saw Sheng Yan calmly pouring a cup of tea, which he then passed to Jinxia.
