Chapter 786: 0786 Part-time! (First Update)
"Qiao’er, this is the young master of the Xu family from our Wushan City. His father and your father have been good friends for many years. Go and greet him quickly," they said.
The Xu family, in Wushan City, was considered a prestigious and famous large clan, at least more so than her own Lin family.
This Xu family’s young master, Qiao’er knew him. They had been classmates before, but at that time, Qiao’er wasn’t outstanding, nor did she dress up or wear makeup, and she didn’t even own a dress, always opting for a neutral attire. Thus, she wasn’t chased by many, instead, Qiao’er ended up becoming good buddies with some of the boys.
Back then, Xu Shaohua had pursued several girls in the class and even mocked Qiao’er as a tomboy.
However, after middle school, Xu Shaohua went abroad for studies and Qiao’er went to another school; the two had not been in contact since then.
They hadn’t expected that after so many years, they would meet again in such a way.
"Qiao’er, you’ve become beautiful after so many years," Xu Shaohua slowly approached, ignoring Ye Qiu who stood to the side, instead displaying a courteous demeanor, much to the satisfaction of Lin’s parents.
Looking back at Ye Qiu, dressed in inexpensive clothing, with hair grown to his shoulders, looking like a casual layabout, they really wondered whether, even if their daughter were to marry him, he could actually support Qiao’er.
Ye Qiu couldn’t help but notice the scrutiny and the fleeting disdain in the eyes of Qiao’er’s parents—all recorded in his sight.
"Xu Shaohua..." Qiao’er nodded slightly, very politely returning the greeting.
"So you still remember me," Xu Shaohua said with a surprised laugh, then struck up a conversation with Qiao’er as if nobody else were there, ignoring Ye Qiu completely.
"You look the same as before," Qiao’er said.
It must be said that Xu Shaohua still looked as handsome as a young man, especially with his aristocratic heritage, which could charm quite a few young girls.
However, Qiao’er had never had a good impression of Xu Shaohua since childhood; even now, despite his designer clothes and dashing appearance, she couldn’t feel much more fond of him; instead, she found him even more capable of sweet-talking than when he was younger.
"Brother Lin, this is your precious daughter, huh? Wow, she’s gotten so big. What are you all standing around for? Don’t tell me I have to eat that entire table of dishes by myself," said an elder who looked significantly older than Qiao’er’s father, with deep wrinkles and sparse hair, but a very upright stance as he walked out from the hall.
Seeing Xu Shaohua’s father come out, Lin’s father immediately laughed and responded, "Indeed, let’s go, let’s go inside, just right as Qiao’er got home, let’s eat first."
As everyone was escorting her, Qiao’er was about to walk into the hall, but then, she turned and walked out instead.
Lin’s parents didn’t know what Qiao’er was up to, then saw her walk towards Ye Qiu.
"Let’s go inside," Qiao’er sweetly smiled at Ye Qiu.
Ye Qiu was momentarily stunned, then took Qiao’er’s hand and together they walked shoulder to shoulder into the hall.
This scene made Lin’s parents very awkward, unsure how to explain to Xu Shaohua’s father.
At this moment, Xu Shaohua’s expression also turned unpleasant. He had come to this arranged meeting because his father had insisted, and the prospective partner was his middle school classmate, especially the one who he used to think was a tomboy. Xu Shaohua was genuinely uninterested, but he didn’t dare to defy his father’s will and had even prepared an end-of-date excuse, claiming their incompatibility. With his experience in romance, it should have been no problem at all.
However, when he saw Qiao’er appear before him, he realized that the once ugly duckling had transformed into a swan, overturning his previous conception of Qiao’er in his mind.
Qiao’er was dressed fashionably and sexily, wearing light makeup that highlighted her delicate features, looking stunningly beautiful.
Was this still the tomboy from before?
The saying "a woman changes eighteen times between childhood and womanhood, becoming more and more beautiful" couldn’t be more apt for Qiao’er.
He was dazzled by her from the first glance, causing a complete one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn in his thoughts.
He even felt that this was fate ordained by the heavens.
But the scene before him, with Lin Qiao’er being led by the hand of another man, walking past him—even seeing the guy’s hand repeatedly tapping on Lin Qiao’er’s waist, as if he was climbing a mountain, filled Xu Shaohua’s heart with a sudden burst of rage.
It felt as if his woman was being violated.
Unbearable.
What gave this guy the right to steal his girlfriend?
"Lin Junior, what are you suggesting?" Xu Shaohua’s father wasn’t a fool; it was clear from the scene that Lin Qiao’er had a boyfriend.
"Xu elder brother, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, Qiao’er is naive. Previously she even said she didn’t have a boyfriend, who would have thought that just a few days later, she would bring someone home? Please don’t take it personally." Seeing Xu’s father’s expression darkening and tone slightly deepening, Father Lin quickly explained, fearing a misunderstanding.
Mother Lin also hurried to explain, "Xu Big Brother, don’t worry, the marriage of this child is still up to us, her parents. How could we let her bring just anyone home, let alone agree to her marrying some poor guy?"
Hearing this, Xu’s father’s expression slightly softened, and he said, "I thought you two were trying to play us, the Xu family. Since that’s the situation, it doesn’t really matter. After all, Qiao’er isn’t married yet, so our Shaohua still has a chance."
"Misunderstanding, misunderstanding, it’s all a misunderstanding," Mr. and Mrs. Lin quickly said with a smile.
Everyone took their seats, and Ye Qiu sat next to Lin Qiao’er. By the look of it, it seemed that this fake boyfriend had to keep up the act.
"This brother, what do you do? Where do you work at a high level?"
Ye Qiu had intended to keep his head down, not say a word, and just drink some water because he was only a fake boyfriend; he didn’t much care about the attitude of Lin Qiao’er’s parents. Unexpectedly, the man who was supposed to have an arranged meeting with Lin Qiao’er suddenly initiated a conversation with him.
Hearing Xu Shaohua asking this question not only attracted the gaze of Xu’s father but also Father Lin, Mother Lin, and several relatives all focused their attention on Ye Qiu.
With a smile, Xu Shaohua asked this question for a reason. He simply took one look and figured that the Ye Qiu in front of him might just be a good-for-nothing young man from the lower echelons of society. Although he didn’t know how Ye Qiu had pursued Lin Qiao’er, facing such a competitor, even though he was Lin Qiao’er’s boyfriend, Xu Shaohua was confident he could snatch her away from Ye Qiu.
As everyone’s gaze converged on him, Ye Qiu put down his chopsticks and said indifferently, "I don’t really have a job. I help enhance personal safety for people and occasionally treat some illnesses, nothing substantial or high-level."
Hearing Ye Qiu’s answer, everybody was momentarily stunned.
Lin Qiao’er pinched Ye Qiu’s thigh, her eyes darting left and right, wishing to remind Ye Qiu why he wasn’t using the identity they had prepared earlier to inform the others.
On the way to Wushan City, Lin Qiao’er had thought up an identity to deal with her parents’ questions. However, Ye Qiu didn’t play by the book; he didn’t mention that he was a senior executive at Longjia Company. Instead, he talked about enhancing personal safety and healing people—what were all these about?
"Ha ha..." Xu Shaohua was the first to laugh, saying, "Brother, you really are something, this personal safety you’re talking about, isn’t that just a security guard?"
Ye Qiu nodded his head and even agreed, "You could say that."
"And the healing part, are you a chief physician at a hospital, or just a quack doctor without even a medical license?" Xu Shaohua said this half-jokingly, half-sarcastically.
Yet Ye Qiu was neither angry nor upset, simply stating, "What you said isn’t wrong, I indeed don’t have a medical license."
Xu Shaohua, unable to hold back, laughed uncontrollably at this extraordinary person before him, "So you’re a quack doctor, haha..."
Mr. and Mrs. Lin’s expressions soured, wondering what kind of person their daughter had found. Such poor conditions.
Apparently, he was a mere security guard, a rural doctor!
