Chapter 507: 0508 Snuggling for Warmth (Fifth Update)
Lin Qiao’er groggily awoke, feeling a heavy dizziness in her head.
Is this death?
She looked around; it was pitch dark, with scattered white snow around. Huh? Something was off. This seemed to be a narrow cave, with only the faintest daylight visible overhead.
How did I get here?
Lin Qiao’er recalled the scene in her memory. She remembered that Ye Qiu appeared at the crucial moment, and then she felt herself tumbling through the air before passing out.
Could it be that she and Ye Qiu had fallen here?
She looked around and it indeed seemed to be the case, but where was Ye Qiu? Why couldn’t she see him?
"You’re awake?"
Just as Lin Qiao’er was feeling a mix of panic and helplessness, Ye Qiu’s voice faintly reached her, and then she saw a disheveled Ye Qiu.
His clothes appeared to have been slashed by something, torn in several places, exposing his broad shoulders and a chest lined with muscle.
"How did you end up like this?" Lin Qiao’er, looking at Ye Qiu’s condition, couldn’t help wanting to laugh, barely containing her amusement.
Ye Qiu scratched his eyebrow. Had he not held onto Lin Qiao’er just in time, she would probably be smashed to pieces by now. As they fell from the top of Azure Dragon Mountain, Ye Qiu protected Lin Qiao’er’s head, intending to use the sparse rocks on the mountain to stabilize their descent. But Lin Qiao’er, for some reason, clung to him as if he were her last life-saving straw, wrapping herself tightly around him, leaving him no chance to maneuver. That had been a mistake. With his arms and legs restricted by Lin Qiao’er’s hold, there was nothing to stop their fall, and they ended up rolling down the peak.
It wasn’t until Lin Qiao’er fell unconscious that Ye Qiu could finally free his hands, but by then it was too late. Falling hundreds of meters from Azure Dragon Mountain at high speed was too much to handle for even a martial arts master like him, especially since he had to ensure Lin Qiao’er’s safety. In the end, the two of them rolled straight from the mountain top into this snow cave they were in now.
Seeing Lin Qiao’er make light of his situation, Ye Qiu calmly said, "It’s not strange for me to be in this state, but you should see yourself — the scenery is rather pleasant, and spring is boundless!"
At first, Lin Qiao’er followed along with what Ye Qiu was saying, but she quickly caught on to his implication and immediately looked down at herself. With one glance, she let out a yelp, covering her chest tightly to prevent Ye Qiu from seeing the white bra underneath.
"Turn around," she commanded out of innate female shyness; she was not comfortable facing Ye Qiu practically half-dressed.
"Okay." Ye Qiu turned around without hesitation, then took off his clothes and tossed them to Lin Qiao’er.
Lin Qiao’er didn’t want to refuse. Considering that her "twin peaks" were about to break through the mist to reveal clear skies, she gripped Ye Qiu’s clothes tightly and quickly put them on.
"Okay, you can turn around now." After three to five minutes, once Lin Qiao’er had straightened out her clothes, she allowed Ye Qiu to turn back.
Feeling the warmth of Ye Qiu’s amused gaze, Lin Qiao’er’s cheeks reddened with shyness, but her tomboy nature quickly pushed her to stand tall and proud. She didn’t believe Ye Qiu dared to do anything inappropriate, and she tried to look nonchalant.
"Thank you." Seeing Ye Qiu throw over the only piece of clothing on his body, and considering the disheveled state he was in because of her, Lin Qiao’er felt somewhat remorseful and sincerely offered her thanks.
"No need to thank me. I would have done the same for anyone in that situation," Ye Qiu responded indifferently.
Lin Qiao’er hmm-ed in response, but soon she felt that it was only right for Ye Qiu to save her. If he hadn’t thrown them out in the first place, how could she have ended up being tossed off the mountain? The more she thought about it, the more she believed it was all Ye Qiu’s fault. She wouldn’t have fallen here if not for him — that guy, it was never good news whenever she encountered him.
Saving her was the least he could do.
Lin Qiao’er lifted her proud neck, then shifting her tone, she asked, "Where are we now?"
"We should be at the base of the mountain," Ye Qiu said casually.
"So can’t we get out?" Lin Qiao’er glanced around. The space wasn’t big, and although it looked a bit like a cave, it wasn’t quite the same. It was more akin to a space created by the wind during a heavy snowfall, with thick snow built up high around it. It seemed sheer luck that they had fallen into this spot.
Ye Qiu shrugged. He had already scouted the place and found no way out. The snow was piled too high; usually, he could try jumping up, but during the fall, he had injured his leg, making it difficult to leverage himself up, let alone with Lin Qiao’er there who also needed help.
"We can’t get out for now; we’ll have to wait for rescue," Ye Qiu stated, finding a clean spot to sit down.
Lin Qiao’er’s expression darkened. If Ye Qiu had no way out, she had even less of a chance. Watching the small amount of daylight above grow dimmer, she knew they would have to endure a long, dark night before any colleagues could reach them.
Night fell.
The air temperature plunged, reaching below minus twenty degrees Celsius.
Lin Qiao’er shivered from the cold, constantly jumping to stimulate her blood circulation and generate heat, but after more than an hour of this method, she felt the chill attacking once again.
Glancing at Ye Qiu, Lin Qiao’er noticed he hadn’t taken any measures against the cold, despite her own hopping and jumping to stay warm. He merely sat there, meditating, an image of tranquility.
"Hey, Ye Qiu, aren’t you cold?" Lin Qiao’er couldn’t help but ask.
Ye Qiu lifted his eyelids and said, "A calm heart is naturally cool, a fervent heart is inherently warm. If you’re truly cold, you can snuggle up to me. Of course, I wouldn’t be against huddling together for warmth."
His words elicited an eye-roll from Lin Qiao’er. She snorted and tried to meditate like Ye Qiu, but she quickly realized his talk of inherent warmth was nonsense; her icy skin assured her it was utterly useless.
"Ye Qiu, you’re tricking me," Lin Qiao’er pointed at him and said resentfully.
Ye Qiu laughed and replied, "It’s because you’re not in the right state of mind. I’ve given you all my clothes, and you’re still cold. I surely cannot strip off my pants to keep you warm, can I?"
"If you need them, I can take them off for you right now."
"You’re shameless!" Lin Qiao’er turned her head away, a flush of crimson crossing her face as she huffed, "I don’t need them at all."
The night grew deeper.
Their situation was dire, cold and hunger besieging them. Lin Qiao’er’s stomach embarrassingly began to growl.
"I still have a piece of beef jerky here. Eat it," Ye Qiu tossed a small piece of beef jerky to Lin Qiao’er.
"Aren’t you hungry?" Lin Qiao’er hesitated.
"I don’t need it," Ye Qiu said and closed his eyes once again.
"Alright then." Lin Qiao’er picked up the beef jerky, opened the bag, and started nibbling on it, bite by bite.
Ye Qiu continued meditating motionlessly, healing the bruise on his leg quickly. It was cold here, without any food, and they could last at most one more day. As for Ye Qiu himself, going hungry for four or five days wouldn’t be an issue, but it was different for Lin Qiao’er. She was just an ordinary girl and, despite her tomboyish nature, she couldn’t go without food or water for several days.
He hoped the others would find them quickly; otherwise...
Ye Qiu mentally prepared himself for the worst.
At midnight, the temperature dropped to its lowest, reaching minus thirty degrees Celsius. In such weather, sleep meant risking never waking up.
Lin Qiao’er, lips turning purple with the cold, started to cough. Her body couldn’t resist the chill anymore, and she was getting a cold.
Seeing Lin Qiao’er becoming drowsy, Ye Qiu ceased meditating. He walked over, grabbed her hands, and sent a stream of True Qi into her, making her feel warm all over. She didn’t resist Ye Qiu holding her hands. Now she wasn’t the tough Lin Qiao’er but a somewhat weakened version.
"Don’t fall asleep at all costs, let’s talk about life," Ye Qiu continued sending True Qi into Lin Qiao’er to maintain her body temperature while speaking, to keep her from falling asleep.
"Yeah, sure," Lin Qiao’er nodded.
"Where is your hometown?"
"Jiangling, what about you?"
"Me? Would you believe I’m an orphan?"
"..."
As Ye Qiu initiated the conversation, Lin Qiao’er did indeed stay awake, but Ye Qiu’s supply of True Qi was running low.
With the cold enclosing, fearful Lin Qiao’er might truly succumb to the chill in her sleep, Ye Qiu forcefully held her in his arms. She surprisingly didn’t resist and even snuggled closer into Ye Qiu’s embrace, the two huddled tightly together, sharing their warmth.
Ye Qiu kept telling his stories to Lin Qiao’er in her ear.
The night was very long...
