Chapter 243: 0241 The Secret Behind the City
Ye Qiu’s disappearance was only known to Lin Qiao’er when Shen Mengchen, Shangguan Hong, and others reported it to the police.
To her surprise, with Ye Qiu’s skills, it didn’t make sense for him to vanish without a reason. The police could only proceed with the search by the book, and Lin Qiao’er requested to join the team looking for Ye Qiu.
Could his disappearance be related to that mysterious assassin?
Lin Qiao’er thought of what she had asked Ye Qiu to do, which was to find that assassin. Her main reason for volunteering to join the search party was precisely this.
Lin Qiao’er, along with a man nicknamed Pot, arrived at the Goddess Villa to find Shen Mengchen and others gathering evidence. After leaving the villa, Lin Qiao’er was more convinced of her previous suspicion that Ye Qiu’s disappearance was probably related to that assassin.
"Boss, I’ve seen Ye Qiu’s ability myself. Even the instructors who usually come are no match for him. Whoever was able to take him away, what kind of background does that mysterious person have?" the male officer nicknamed Pot said. He had been following Lin Qiao’er closely, and the two were old partners. When Lin Qiao’er joined the mission to find Ye Qiu, Pot had followed her as well.
"They wouldn’t lie to me, nor would they joke about Ye Qiu’s safety. Even though I don’t know who that mysterious person is, to incapacitate a guy as arrogant as Ye Qiu, they must be someone even more formidable," Lin Qiao’er said gravely.
Realizing the logic in her words, Pot, who had just learned from Shen Mengchen that Ye Qiu had been taken away by a mysterious person, knew it couldn’t be false. But with such a mysterious person coming out of nowhere, they really didn’t know where to start.
Just as both of them had their own thoughts, Lin Qiao’er’s phone suddenly rang.
It was Director Wang.
On the other end of the phone, a brief and concise sentence came through.
"Come back to the station immediately."
Lin Qiao’er acknowledged with a grunt, gestured to Pot, and said, "Get in the car, I’ve been called back to the station for something."
"What’s the matter?" Pot asked, puzzled.
Lin Qiao’er scolded, "Why do you ask so many questions?" Pot laughed sheepishly, his face showing a simple, honest smile. Yet, his actions were not the slightest bit hesitant, as he quickly got into the police car and headed straight for the station.
Upon arriving at the station, Lin Qiao’er was taken to the morgue by her colleagues.
Lin Qiao’er felt that the atmosphere today was different and asked the guiding Xiao Huang what had happened, but he evaded the question and didn’t give her an answer.
Pot, however, took Lin Qiao’er’s side and said disapprovingly, "Xiao Huang, it seems like you don’t want to get promoted in the future. Officer Lin is asking you a question, and you’re just stammering."
Hearing this, male officer Xiao Huang grimaced and said, "I’m just following orders from above. How could I not obey? Besides, this is a direct command from the chief himself. Without his permission, no one is allowed to reveal even a hint about today’s incident, so I hope you don’t blame me, senior brother and sister."
Seeing his words were to no avail, Pot grunted. Lin Qiao’er didn’t pursue the matter further and said, "Let it be, don’t make it tough on Xiao Huang. We’ll find out soon enough what our questions are."
Pot nodded, and within a few steps, the three reached the morgue. Four officers were standing guard at the door, and Lin Qiao’er was surprised. What was the matter that higher-ups would take such serious measures, even guarding the morgue with a heavy hand?
Xiao Huang went in first to report, then Lin Qiao’er and Pot were allowed to enter. Pot huffed at Xiao Huang and followed in, while male officer Xiao Huang sighed, closed the door, and stood guard.
The clang of the iron door had already startled Director Wang inside the morgue.
"Director, you called for me." Lin Qiao’er saw that Director Wang was intently staring ahead, and she took the initiative to speak, unable to see what the director was looking at.
"Lin, come here," Director Wang called Lin Qiao’er over.
Lin Qiao’er strode to Director Wang’s side and heard him say, "Do you know what this is?"
Staring at the creature lying in front of her, Lin Qiao’er’s mouth gaped wide open. Was this thing human or ghost?
It had to be said that Lin Qiao’er was shocked by the scene before her; despite being a police officer for so long, she had never seen such a strange creature.
The semblance of a human, whether from the top of the head down to the soles of the feet, was indistinguishable from a person’s form; yet, this was not what rendered Lin Qiao’er speechless. What shook her the most was that this humanoid fellow was covered in animal-like fur, its ears, pupils, palms, and feet were no different from those of an animal, appearing like a monstrous humanoid creature.
"Surprised, aren’t you? Don’t mention you, even I was speechless when I first saw it."
"Although we don’t know the identity of the person who brought this giant corpse here, after a blood test, we found that this guy’s blood matches the bloodstains left at the scene where Ye Qiu disappeared," Director Wang said calmly, but to Lin Qiao’er, it was like a thunderclap.
"We have also found another man’s blood, which should be Ye Qiu’s. It seems they must have fought, and in the end, this creature was struck fataly, its heart shattered, and neck twisted."
"The reason I called you back here is to learn what you know about this Ye Qiu," Director Wang said.
"He must have acted in self-defense, especially since this guy was not even human..." Lin Qiao’er started to explain before Director Wang cut her off, "I’m not trying to pin a crime on him; I just want to understand what happened. Maybe we can get some information about this creature from his mouth."
Director Wang saw the intent behind Lin Qiao’er speaking up for Ye Qiu and didn’t mind it. He even chuckled, "I’ve heard that your relationship with Ye Qiu isn’t good, so why are you speaking up for him now?"
In the police department, there were records of Ye Qiu having been to the police station for a statement, and Director Wang had already reviewed them. He knew that it was Lin Qiao’er who had interrogated Ye Qiu initially.
"I can’t stand that guy; I wouldn’t say anything good about him," Lin Qiao’er stubbornly said, her righteous indignation apparent. However, to Director Wang, an old hand at this, it just appeared as a blatant cover-up, and he could easily see through Lin Qiao’er’s emotions.
"You’ve seen the situation for yourself. This half-human, half-beast fellow, I’ve classified it as the highest-level secret of the entire department, and reported every detail to my superiors. Since you’ve had contact with Ye Qiu before, and now that Ye Qiu has disappeared and you’re in charge of the case, I think we should step up our efforts to find Ye Qiu and clarify the whole story."
"Later, I’ll add more people to the squad looking for Ye Qiu. Lin, I’ll leave this matter entirely in your hands. If you can successfully find Ye Qiu, you’ll have accomplished a great feat," Director Wang said.
"Thank you, Director Wang. This time, I definitely won’t disappoint you," Lin Qiao’er promised.
As she walked out of the morgue, Lin Qiao’er’s mind was full of thoughts. Ye Qiu had actually fought with such a non-human creature. What exactly had he experienced? And that mysterious person, unknown to Director Wang, was something Lin Qiao’er chose to conceal, as she had a vague feeling that there was more behind all this than met the eye.
Back in the morgue, Director Wang, after listening to the test results from the forensic department, stood silently lost in thought, murmuring, "This is going to shake up the higher ups; could it be that in this bustling city, there really is a mysterious power, a presence of a martial world?"
As the head of a department, how could Director Wang have no inkling of the news? It was only after seeing this half-human, half-beast corpse that he had no choice but to believe that there was indeed a mysterious power walking among the hustle and bustle of the city.
