Chapter 496: Chapter 37 "The School of Prophets indeed hardly has any good stuff" _1
But when Dmitry and Annan were just about to put the next step of their plan into action...
Ivan Rime discovered his brothers sneaking around.
— And so Dmitry was severely beaten by Grand Duke Ivan twice.
Once because he, as the eldest son, dared to make such a significant decision without consulting his father’s opinion, and a second time because he failed to set an example as an elder brother by restraining his younger brother Annan from acting rashly—thus, the second beating was taken on behalf of Annan.
Although Dmitry did not care about his own fertility, and he had never considered having children,
his indifference to the matter did not change the fact that being the first in line to the succession without the ability to produce offspring would destabilize the duchy.
At that time, Maria had already decided to follow the path of the Lady of the Storm.
The only one who could inherit the Grand Duke’s position was the young Annan.
This decision caused Maria to become even more flustered. Unlike her elder brother Dmitry, Maria did not trust the young Annan very much, but was extremely worried and overly protective of him.
The second year after Annan was born, their mother passed away due to complications in childbirth—there should have been six brothers, with the sixth dying before birth, and two dying before the age of three due to the power of the Winter’s Heart, never living long enough to have names of their own.
Annan was the penultimate.
Maria was the third.
She was raised by Dmitry, and she personally took care of the young Annan as he grew up.
More a mother than a sister.
Despite knowing Annan’s outstanding talents, she did not trust him as much as she worried endlessly about his wellbeing. In contrast to Annan and their father Ivan, she trusted Dmitry more to become a good Grand Duke.
But due to the rot...
Ivan’s life had not been successfully extended, and he could die at any moment.
— Then it would be up to the three brothers to depend on each other for survival.
Compared to ordinary households that just "wish to live a good life," the three of them had a nation’s people to look after behind them. The war had not been over for long, with foreign enemies nearby and uncertainty whether the domestic nobles could be subdued, all while they had to care for and protect the common people...
The most trustworthy elder brother Dmitry, in Maria’s eyes, had also lost his right to the succession.
The future of the Rime Duchy would fall into the tiny hands of Annan.
How could he possibly cope?
Maria, who had been very calm and planned to wait and die while inheriting the Lady of the Storm’s mantle in her forties or fifties, resolved to become a powerful Transcendent as soon as possible.
This was also why she participated in Master Michelangelo’s succession ritual.
She was a Decree Wizard from the Storm Tower lineage, the future Lady of the Storm.
But the Lady of the Storm will eventually die...
Maria did not fear death, but she was worried about Annan.
Without her, could Annan really take care of himself?
She also felt that Michelangelo’s sudden call to eight young wizards must be a conspiracy. Most likely, it was some sort of ritual... but by then, she could no longer care about so much.
Just as Dmitry and Annan acted on their own without informing her and their father.
Perhaps it was revenge, or it seemed like a strange competition—she did not tell Ivan or Dmitry either when she went to the Frigid Wight Tower.
Maria was always the type of person who spoke her mind and acted on her convictions.
Resolute and unyielding, she took on her responsibilities and marched on in silence.
More like those hardy men of Winter with responsibilities at home than her peers or emperors’ progeny raised amidst conspiracies.
It was because of Maria’s straightforwardness and integrity...
That she almost died in the forbidden ritual of the Twin Towers, the "Overlap of Life and Death".
Maria had not quite figured out how the ritual had ultimately taken effect. It was only when there were four of them left after killing each other that they heard Michelangelo’s message... informing them that this was just the first half of a ritual.
It wasn’t until recently that they realized... it had been an Ascension Ritual.
And the facilitator of this forbidden ritual, Michelangelo, had successfully ascended and become a True God not long before.
That is, the "Person in the Mirror."
So, when Maria returned that year, Dmitry got another beating.
Such was the unbearable burden of the eldest son...
No matter what, he was always the one getting beaten up.
But thanks to that beating, Dmitry remembered very clearly. According to Maria, only four people had survived the ritual.
Aside from Maria, the remaining three were all dangerous individuals... of course, those who died were even more dangerous.
Now Pope of the Person in the Mirror, Benjamin Foster;
the Wizard who hailed from the Heath Tower of Black, David Gerald;
... and the Student of the Person in the Mirror, the Prophet from the School of Prophets, Giralda Ivo Buonaro.
And this name...
... Giralda David Buonarro.
It was precisely the result of mixing the names of two survivors in the ritual.
Although he did not know why one would add a "David" in the middle of one’s own name.
But judging from this appearance, it was undoubtedly the "Giralda" Maria had described.
That harmless and lukewarm Prophet Wizard... who remained peaceful until the end, Maria did not know what he had done or what trickery he had employed. It’s likely that he had already rewritten all possible futures that could have affected him using his prophetic spells.
The goal of the School of Prophets was never just "to glimpse into the future."
What they practiced was the art of "standing in the past and rewriting the future."
Dmitry had encountered a Prophet Wizard from the Twin Towers.
When Dmitry asked him, "If your School of Prophets can obtain the results after the completion of their studies through spells... then what exactly do they need to study?" the other posed Dmitry this question or perhaps riddle:
"If ’yesterday’ became ’tomorrow,’ it would be the day before two days. Then, is ’the day after tomorrow’ ’today’ or ’yesterday’?"
Dmitry was stumped.
Although he never figured it out in the end, he was convinced—the Wizards of the School of Prophets all had terribly sharp minds.
The most silent, most unassuming, and least noticeable Prophet Wizards were definitely the ones who had done the most and relatively had the highest level of "Prophets."
Using their highly functional brains, spinning constantly every day, each one of them was scarily smart, holding a vision of the future, able to modify the future from the past—Prophet Wizards... yet from their appearance, they were so ordinary that one could overlook them if not careful.
If you saw this, would you believe it?
Dmitry certainly didn’t.
His impression at the time was, "There really aren’t any good things coming from the School of Prophets."
The more unassuming they appeared, the more likely they were plotting against everybody they possibly could.
Dmitry glanced at the gentle and cheerful middle-aged man before him.
Sure enough.
On his hand, he saw a silver ring.
... Had he been calculated against by these mystifying Prophets again?
This thought crossed Dmitry’s mind.
