Chapter 424: Chapter 421 Annan’s True Nightmare_1
——This is the real main quest.
It was only after the false dreamscape collapsed that Annan finally entered his true nightmare.
What appeared before him was a world on the brink of shattering.
Looking down, there was a bottomless abyss.
And a piece of ruins, like a giant ship, was slowly sinking downwards.
The direction of gravity was completely broken too. There were even fragments of buildings presented in a 180-degree inverted manner.
"It looks as if some extraplanar demon is about to dig its way out and have a chat with me..."
Annan couldn’t help but complain.
He was now near the bottom of the deep pit. Looking up, on the many varied, broken stone walls, hung paintings of different sizes.
But unlike "Nightmare: Gallery," the content of each painting here was very simplistic.
They were either eyes, ears, or mouths.
And both eyes and mouths were opening and closing at different frequencies.
They must be features of someone Annan had seen before.
——He could tell because among the many portraits, he spotted the characteristic tired eyes with dark circles of Salvatore.
Honestly, he hadn’t seen many people who were so sleep-deprived yet still alive...
Annan looked up to see a dim, deep red sky, where instead of the sun, there was just a huge, icy blue eye.
If Annan wasn’t mistaken... that was his own pupil.
An icy blue light, following the direction of the eye, swept across the ground. The ground that was illuminated by the light instantly formed a thin layer of frost and quickly dissipated as soon as the gaze moved away.
"...So is this a parkour game?"
Annan muttered in surprise, "Should I avoid this light? Will it kill me instantly or something...?"
How should these seven shards of fear be collected?
He already had three.
Two of them, he should have obtained from those two Nightmare Shards. The third one might be Annan’s own fear...
Suddenly, Annan noticed that two paintings in the distance had been burned. Another painting was nailed with a dagger emanating a rainbow shine—Annan saw it clearly, it was his "Other Eye."
"...I understand now."
Annan narrowed his eyes slightly.
If each piece of someone’s memory fragments could generate a sub-nightmare... there should be sixty-three Nightmare Shards here.
Then the mechanism to enter the Nightmare Shards must be obvious—
——the entrance was these paintings.
Those paintings made of eyes, ears, and mouths of people he didn’t recognize, were very likely to be fragments of will added by Salvatore.
Could it be that because I have experienced the gallery nightmare, its form has also changed my own subconscious...?
"——Hmm."
Just then, the eye in the sky swept over.
Annan didn’t have any illusions of luck and hid behind the nearest cover at the first opportunity.
He glanced around, ran forward two steps, and leaped.
It was blatantly obvious, the gravity was inverted—
Annan was "pulled" to the left in the middle of his jump... or rather, he was falling toward the piece of building on the left that faced him.
Just to be safe, Annan chose to nimbly flip his body like a cat, landing lightly on all fours.
He paused there for a moment, relieving his dizziness before rushing forward once again.
After several leaps, Annan leaned against the wall behind him.
This was to prevent himself from being spotted by that eyeball in the sky when entering the Nightmare Shard.
...Now the problem is,
where exactly is the Dream Stealer, Denton, hiding?
Could he be inside a shard? If so, the search could be endless...
Or is it required to collect at least seven fragments of fear before setting out to look for Denton?
But if Denton is not captured, will he tamper with the content of the nightmare again?
Annan pondered quietly while surveying the paintings before him.
If he wasn’t mistaken, in these paintings there should be an entrance to the chamber of fear...
"Is this... Benjamin’s eyes? Whose mouth is this... seems like Kafney’s? But there are Kafney’s eyes here too..."
Ah, this is it—
Finally, Annan noticed an unfamiliar pupil.
It was because he had never seen such cold, indifferent gray pupils before. Otherwise, he’d surely have remembered...
The gray eyes within the painting soon detected Annan’s gaze.
The moment their eyes met,
all the paintings "with mouths" suddenly emitted noise.
Screams, roars, and cries... filled the air around Annan from all directions.
This time, instead of a shaky disturbance like a poorly tuned TV before him, everything dimmed down.
When the light brightened again, Annan had acquired a new body.
—This time, he was a young woman with a fine figure.
She was wearing a white high-neck sweater and slippers, seemingly in her own home.
Annan glanced out of the window, then suddenly paused, a bit dazed.
Outside the window were... clear blue skies and white clouds.
Annan had never seen such a pure, gem-like sky.
The sky over Noah, like that of any industrial city... could be seen, but upon looking up, there was always a bright gray cloudiness. This was probably due to the numerous factories of Noah.
And Winter, even less need be said—above its dome, there were nothing but ceaseless, howling blizzards.
But here...
Annan couldn’t help but walk toward the window.
"Hmm..."
She wasn’t quite adapted to the new body’s center of gravity, but fortunately, walking wasn’t a problem.
Gazing out of the window, the stunning view left her a bit entranced.
It was a marvelous sight, very close to the models of modern skyscrapers.
A glance revealed buildings with at least ten stories, existing in strange patterns of fours or twos. Between every set of high-rises were objects resembling elevators, or like glass tubes, rippling in colors.
From these pipes sprouted golden and silver veins, entwined upon the neighboring buildings, emitting fluctuating glows. Perhaps due to the color scheme, it didn’t evoke a sense of nausea, but rather a feeling of sanctity under the sunlight.
Annan also spotted two huge divine statues—at least twenty stories tall, approximately a hundred meters...
One was a valiant knight riding a red horse, donned in red armor, wearing a red helmet. He wielded a massive, extravagantly designed six-bladed spear behind him, looking ready to thrust it into someone before him at any moment. The weapon seemed to combine a lance and a war hammer, promising deadly punctures and strikes.
The other, a child with white hair, white skin, barefoot in a white robe, with long hair flowing freely. Judging from the back, it was difficult to determine the gender; their hands spread forward, palms up, bowing slightly as if whispering something.
—Annan recognized at a glance that these were the Red Knight and Mr. Radiance.
Is this The Holy Nation?
