Chapter 188: Chapter 186 Panacea (1st Update)_1
What on earth has Salvatore succeeded in?
It was rare to see him so excited; even Annan was growing curious.
This guy...
He usually walked around with his head lowered and eyebrows furrowed, always looking like an oversized Gaara with a touch of irritability and chronic sleep deprivation.
No matter what kind of work Salvatore was doing, he always seemed to lack enthusiasm and patience.
But seeing him so impatient and weary-faced, yet still methodically getting the work done... an inexplicable sense of pleasure welled up in Annan’s heart.
The corners of his mouth were insanely™ upturned.
No matter how Annan asked, Salvatore remained tight-lipped.
He just urged Annan to hurry up and put some clothes on, and follow him down to the basement to see for himself.
"You don’t need to dress too warmly, the basement is quite warm. Don’t bother with shoes either, we’ll have to take them off when we get down there... Hurry, hurry!"
"...All right, all right."
Urged by Salvatore, Annan had no choice but to throw on a couple of light layers and get out of bed.
This was his first time entering Salvatore’s basement.
"Speaking of which, senior,"
Annan, feeling a bit cold, tightened his clothes and asked, "Was this basement originally part of the lord’s mansion?"
Striding ahead, Salvatore responded with a hum, "Sort of. It’s actually a temporary shelter connected to a private dungeon and storage room.
"After I arrived at Frostwater Harbor, I thought I wouldn’t need it anyway. So, I just had them all connected... um, Tan Juan, should I change it back for you before I leave?"
"No need, I probably won’t use it either..."
Annan shook his head, declining Salvatore’s kind offer.
What did he need a dungeon for?
If someone really needed to be thrown into a dungeon... it would be better for them to help Annan complete the month’s Curse Binding.
——He would just pull out a kitchen knife and scatter their ashes to the wind.
From this perspective, the difference between Annan’s dungeon and his storage room wasn’t really that significant...
Pushing aside a huge painting frame, the two made their way down into the basement via a steep staircase.
Walking barefoot on the stairs, Annan suddenly paused.
The further down he went, the warmer he felt wafting up from the basement, bringing him a comfortable sensation.
...It felt like underfloor heating?
"What’s down there?"
Annan asked in surprise, "Why is it so warm?"
"I have set up a constant temperature barrier. That’s why I told you to dress lightly."
Salvatore replied, "Frostwater Harbor is too cold; vegetables left outside can frost over. Many of my reagents would denature at such temperatures.
"The temperature by the entrance here is relatively high, while the part closer to the dungeon is even colder than the outside. It’s used for storing different types of reagents..."
Once at the bottom, they proceeded along a narrow, dimly lit corridor.
Annan could feel that the temperature was around twenty-four degrees; it grew hotter as they moved forward, and even the floorboards seemed to heat up.
He also distinctly felt the air moving. His skin sensitively detected the breeze...unlike the stuffy air one would expect in a usual basement.
"This breeze..."
"I made four air vents to circulate the airflow. It also helps vent out some harmful and poisonous gases."
Salvatore quickly explained, "If you don’t let the fresh air from outside in, staying in the basement for too long can be very dangerous.
"I don’t have that many high-quality gems to cover the entire basement with a constant temperature barrier. Therefore, except for the areas where the most stable temperature is required, the rest of the barrier nodes are placed around the air vents to form a convection..."
As he spoke, Salvatore took out a key and unlocked the basement door.
Annan noticed that it was a strangely shaped long-handled key.
It was vertical. The handle was long, and at the end was a thick geometric shape.
Salvatore held it and inserted it about four-fifths of the way in, then turned it to the right by one-third, pulled the depth back to half and turned it to the left for a full circle before pushing it to the bottom and turning it to the right by half.
It was just like opening a safe...
Annan subconsciously memorized the password to enter the door.
He was about to move forward but was stopped by Salvatore’s outstretched hand.
"Wait a minute,"
Salvatore said.
As a dull mechanical click sounded, the door opened automatically, swinging inward at a slow speed.
Annan looked up and saw that with the door opening, two copper balls, triggered by the mechanism, slid on brass tracks.
Reaching the end, they sequentially tipped the seesaws. Two smaller copper balls were launched, colliding in the air and changing their trajectory before entering new tracks. Finally, four large copper balls rolled slowly, simultaneously pressing down on four stone slabs on the walls’ tops.
"—It’s safe to enter now."
Salvatore explained, "I have set up traps here.
"Because there are some things inside... that are not very convenient to show to others. I was worried that someone would break the door open or steal my key. So if the door isn’t opened in the right way, whoever enters will be killed by the mechanism.
"The core of the mechanism was personally designed by Professor Benjamin. The traps they trigger are powerful enough to kill even a silver-tier ’Gladiator’ or ’Royal Knight’ caught off guard..."
Annan followed Salvatore into the basement.
The area was very spacious.
It resembled a square. Fires blazed on all four walls, illuminating the ground brightly.
All four walls were open, with only platforms and desks placed around. The floor was divided into sections by silver lines.
Not far ahead, there was a barrier made around a central red gemstone, emanating waves of heat, surrounded by brass troughs like castle walls, with red liquid rotating and flowing inside.
And on another side, there were bottles and jars, as well as various measuring cups and unintelligible devices.
Annan felt a bit dizzy at the sight...
Noticing Annan’s gaze, Salvatore quickly explained, "Drawing lines is actually enough. I only need to use silver lead powder to draw the barrier to prevent different kinds of Curse Bindings from flowing into each other; there’s no need to build walls of lead... that would even inconvenience me."
"Where’s your stuff?"
Annan asked obediently, "Can I touch the things here?"
"Everything here is fine, just browse around,"
Salvatore said with a proud curl of his lips, "Take anything you like."
He quickly added, "But be careful not to burn yourself—the gemstone in the constant temperature barrier is very hot; don’t touch it."
Annan nodded.
He first approached the table with the bottles and jars.
It seemed there were already several finished reagents on there.
They had glass casings with silver mesh patterns and bronze bases outside, and inside flowed a golden turbid liquid.
—It looked a bit like orange juice.
When Annan picked it up, he suddenly froze.
Because at that moment, a line of information appeared before Annan:
[Panacea (Type Three)]
[Type: Consumable (Blue)]
[Description: An upgraded formula of Panacea, can be prepared without Golden Mistletoe but the effect is less potent]
[Effect: Restores 100% Health (when used by Bronze-tier and below); restores 20% Health (when used by Bronze-tier and above)]
...Is this, a health potion?
Annan’s eyes widened slightly.
He had been in this world for so long.
And finally, he saw what a health potion looked like!
