Chapter 1069: Chapter 127 Heaven Seizing Expedition
Yawen spilled the secrets in one breath, answering many of the questions that had been troubling Annan’s mind. Yet, they also introduced new uncertainties.
But he had roughly cleared up the direction of the problem now.
Annan himself was the inheritor of Sisyphus and, at the same time, the successor to the Charioteer. He was to initiate or become the new Charioteer... to allow this world to possess new blood.
And The Worm would definitely want to stop him, to kill him.
Thus, The Worm became Annan’s greatest enemy.
It was not that Annan must eradicate The Worm, but that The Worm would inevitably come knocking on his door.
Perhaps, the Winter Reverser’s intense malice towards Annan also partly stemmed from The Worm’s spiritual contamination...
"As for the death of the Charioteer, even among us old folks, the theories are completely different.
"Sibyl, Bode, and Ananke believe that the Charioteer might have been exterminated by a great attack from ’an infinitely distant future,’ one that crossed over the river of time, which is why they couldn’t see anything and were completely unable to calculate that segment of past and future;
"While the Faceless Poet, the Grey Craftsman, Old Granny, my eldest sister, and that old ancestor of yours, as well as the blacksmith from The Holy Nation... They all believe the Charioteer didn’t die but, as the ’core’ of the Luminous Realm, was abducted to the Otherworld by another world’s Charioteer.
"Afterward, during the Second Era, when the demonic army invaded The Void World, their banner was ’Heaven Seizing Expedition’—which is to say, the expedition to reclaim their beloved Charioteer. And the world closest to this one is The Void World.
"But, naturally, the Charioteer wasn’t in The Void World. However, since they’d already come, they still conquered The Void World."
"...And you?" Annan inquired thoughtfully, "And what about Miss Haoyun?"
He didn’t even know why, but he just inexplicably trusted Miss Haoyun.
That girl who flashed by in the fragments of memory, playing with dice...
And Yawen was evidently quite pleased with Annan’s words.
He happily propped himself back and lay on the rocking chair—had it not been for Paper Princess and Annan being there, he probably would’ve contentedly lit a cigarette by now.
He laughed for a while before seriously saying, "My thoughts align with Scortia’s. Incidentally, my second sister feels the same, and the Moth Mother’s line of thinking is not much different from ours.
"We believe that the Charioteer might indeed have suffered some kind of attack... but this attack was not fatal. Instead, it made her leap into the River of Dreams.
"Because indeed, one would pass through the Dream Realm when ascending to the Luminous Realm from this world. And what Sisyphus witnessed was not ’the death of the Charioteer,’ but merely ’the dimming and fragmentation of the Charioteer’s light.’
"For a deity, this wouldn’t count as death. And the Charioteer even had the time to arrange the subsequent operational logic for the Charioteer, directly dismantling her own truth and scattering it along the way to the Luminous Realm, transforming it into the stars of heaven... also allowing the Charioteer to safely return Sisyphus to port.
"At least I don’t think this is something the Charioteer could decide and accomplish in an instant."
"...You mean," Annan realized Yawen’s logic, "what Sisyphus witnessed was not ’the death of the Charioteer,’ but merely the moment of the Charioteer’s fragmentation?"
"It’s a classic plot twist in detective novels."
Yawen’s lips slightly lifted as he slowly said, "You think they’re dead, but they’re not. At least, at the point in time when Sisyphus thought the Charioteer had died, she wasn’t actually dead."
"I guessed she leapt into the River of the Dream Realm during the Charioteer’s return voyage and proceeded to a world even further downstream," Annan said, "while the Moth Mother thinks that the Charioteer went to a fragment of the Dream Realm.
"That’s also why the Moth Mother often explores those fragments of the world at the far end of the Dream Realm.
"Of course... although that’s what I think, I don’t really have any way to prove it."
Yawen said this and, helplessly spreading his hands, added, "But Sibyl is still investigating—she originally traveled through the River of the Dream Realm and came to this world by chance. Miss Haoyun does have the ability to travel across worlds.
"Moreover, I think that perhaps you were brought here by Sibyl. Because Sibyl has pulled in quite a number of people from different worlds. I actually think of it as a sort of prank.
"The Red Knight, the Bell Ringer, and the Double-Headed Singer... along with some deities and some not-yet deities, they were all pulled here from the Otherworld. And they weren’t even from the same world—Sibyl doesn’t pull people from the same world. I really admire such spontaneous actions.
"And me... I can’t really do much. All I could do was repair the Charioteer’s body, stitching it inside the world to prevent it from directly colliding and collapsing."
Yawen declared righteously, "I at least completely restored the Charioteer’s appearance, not a single trace suggesting she’d ever shattered. That’s all I could do..."
But Annan felt that perhaps this old pigeon was simply lazy...
And yet...
Did I come to this world because of Miss Haoyun’s prank as well?
Annan noticed another point.
He should have been attracted here by the power of the Chariot—and it’s likely that Sibyl played a part in it.
Annan also always felt a sense of familiarity with Sibyl. Although he couldn’t clearly remember her face or her voice, with only a fragmented "You don’t have a next year to speak of" lingering in his mind.
But Annan felt that, "Miss Haoyun is trustworthy," and "Miss Haoyun is very dangerous, better not to seek her out without good reason"—he had these strange feelings.
"...I actually have another question."
Annan thought for a moment and then asked, "Regarding the matter of someone digging up the Charioteer’s corpse, did the Silver Baron mention it to you?
"And ... if Sisyphus is a pure white, flame-cross, what then is the true appearance of the Charioteer?"
"He did come to tell me and even asked if I would go."
Yawen boldly declared something astonishing, "Of course, I couldn’t be bothered to go. He’s not incapable of handling it himself, yet he makes a big fuss inviting a bunch of old friends... It’s utterly pointless. I don’t even know who he’s showing off for.
"As for the Charioteer’s appearance..."
Yawen’s expression grew subtle, "Why do you think we all came to Aesirland?
"Because the Charioteer basically looked like you all. So there’s a reason behind ’God so loved the world’.
"To be precise—"
Yawen’s mouth curved into a slight smile, "Apart from having black hair, silver-white pupils, and the stature of a young girl... the Charioteer’s demeanor, voice, appearance... all bear a striking resemblance to you.
"That’s why they call you ’Charioteer.’ It’s not a title from ’the future’ but rather from ’the past.’"
