Information processing takes place as laser beams enter arrays formed by mirrors and lenses. Photons replace electrons, and optical operations replace electrical operations.

The inherent parallelism and high speed of light mean that Photon Computers have strong parallel processing capabilities and can operate at extremely high speeds. Photon Computers also possess fault tolerance similar to the human brain; the failure or error of any component in the system does not affect the final computation results. The distortion and loss of information caused by the transmission of photons through optical media is minimal, and the energy consumption and heat dissipated during light transmission and conversion are very low, making their environmental requirements much lower than that of electronic computers.
