Chapter 446
Chapter 446: Chapter 218 Location Positioning Chapter 446: Chapter 218 Location Positioning Yan Fei carried out an unthinkable gold heist and then returned to China. However, in the United States, his action had already sent shockwaves through the entire US higher-ups. Nobody had anticipated that, despite such stringent security, someone had managed to steal all the gold stored at the New York Federal Reserve Bank. The heist was incredibly peculiar; no useful clues were left at the scene, leaving the US side without any leads to solving the case.
This sent shivers down the spines of the US higher-ups, as all the gold had gone missing from a heavily guarded underground vault. If the thief so wished, could they not just steal the nuclear bombs from US military bases under everyone's noses? It's worth noting that the defense of these military bases isn't much better than that of the underground vault, and nuclear bombs have far greater destructive power than gold.
What truly terrified the higher echelons of the US government was that the gold stored at the New York Federal Reserve Bank didn't belong to the United States but to other countries and organizations around the world. These reserves of gold were kept in the US underground vaults for convenience in settlement after transactions. Other countries and organizations owned these reserves, not the United States. However, due to US's strong control over international finance, the true owners could only store their gold there and were not permitted to repatriate it. They weren't even allowed by the US side to personally check and confirm the existence of their own gold.
Yet because of the robustness of the US currency, along with a certain amount of trust in the US Government's credibility, they had no choice but to reluctantly accept the arrangement of keeping so much gold in the US underground vault. Since the gold was entirely in the hands of the US Government and was free from any external scrutiny, naturally, they might be tempted to harbor thoughts about the gold at their fingertips.
Once, a journalist reported this cover-up, claiming that the gold in the underground vault had been completely appropriated by the US Government, leaving the vault empty. However, the US Government immediately denied this, stating all the gold was still in the vault, yet they refused to allow anyone to enter and verify the situation.
If Yan Fei was able to steal enough gold from the underground vault to upgrade his Drone, this proved that there was at least 1000 tons of gold in the vault. But after some calculations, Yan Fei realized that there definitely wasn't as much as 7000 tons of gold in the vault, with at least a few thousand tons having been misappropriated. And the only ones capable of misappropriating that much gold could only be the US Government, the custodians of the gold.
According to the US Government's real mindset, since the gold was under their custody, they had already considered it their own property, not intending to let anyone take the gold out of the country. As long as its rightful owners didn't see the gold, they could keep playing this game indefinitely. But now that the gold was gone, it was like their own wealth had vanished, and of course, they would want to get it back.
And so, inside the New York Federal Reserve Bank's Underground Gold Vault, this place now devoid of gold was being used as a temporary office. A group of people representing the highest authorities in the United States gathered together to discuss how to retrieve the lost gold. At the center of the underground vault stood a lonely round table, with a few people sitting in chairs beside it, convening a meeting.
The white-haired Caucasian representative of the Federal Reserve said, “Gentlemen, the situation is very grim. If the news of all the gold being lost gets out, it could lead to catastrophic consequences. Our currency would plummet, our bonds would be dumped, and we might face a financial crisis akin to the Great Depression of the 1930s. We must resolve this issue as swiftly as possible and maintain the US's credibility internationally.”
A middle-aged African American man representing the FBI stated, “Our people have thoroughly checked the underground vault, and no entry point was discovered that would allow someone to break in. Nevertheless, my subordinates suspect that the thief might've crawled in from behind this huge rebar-concrete component, as evidenced by the cement cracked beneath it. But no one can explain how the thief managed to move the rebar-concrete component, which weighs 100 tons. Additionally, with the total gold in the underground vault weighing up to 2500 tons, who could possibly have the capability to move all of them in such a short time?”
The Caucasian man in military uniform representing the US military interjected, “After being notified of the situation, we dispatched troops to block off and search several nearby blocks, forbidding anyone from entering or leaving the area, under the pretense that the military was conducting exercises here. However, our personnel did not find anything suspicious in the vicinity, nor any suspicious persons.”
The FBI's representative continued, “We've mobilized all of the FBI's resources in New York and are fully investigating this case. More colleagues are on their way to reinforce us, in hopes of finding some clues.”
The white-haired Federal Reserve representative spoke again, “Gentlemen, this case is extremely troublesome and even touches upon the life and death of our nation. And since we have no useful clues at present, can we call on the Four Major Famous Detectives of our nation to investigate this case?”
