Chapter 407: Chapter 406: There’s such a thing

Peter Brown actually wasn’t a meddlesome person. Seeing that the girl had been rescued and that the middle-aged woman claimed to be her mother, he didn’t want to pursue the case any further and decided not to get involved.

Peter had changed his mindset after killing so many people, realizing that the world was a place where the weak were prey to the strong. Could he handle that many things on his own?

The police never questioned whether the woman was the girl’s mother, and since it was their family matter, Peter intervening would only cause more trouble for himself.

Peter already had plenty of troubles and didn’t want to get involved in this one. Although he could see that the young man named Jack Carter was a bad person, what could he do about it? The girl’s family didn’t want to press charges, and Peter didn’t want to interfere in the case.

Director Wilson, who shared the same family name as the woman, praised Peter for his bravery and personally escorted him outside of the police station.

Peter could only express his discontent inwardly at Director Wilson’s actions.

After leaving the police station and noticing that the sky was already bright, Peter abandoned his plans to rest for a while.

Enjoying the rare serenity, Peter decided to take a walk around the area.

Peter had been extremely busy lately with various events happening. So many things had happened in the past few months that it felt like a lifetime’s worth. He never imagined things would turn out this way.

As he walked down the streets without being followed, Peter came across a large supermarket. He didn’t care about others’ opinions and started buying whatever he thought might be useful.

Only after his stay on the Knowledge Sea did Peter realize that no matter how many items he had in his Ring, it was still not enough.

Peter’s purchase was so big that it attracted the attention of the supermarket owner, who personally accompanied him while shopping. Later, the owner arranged for a vehicle to transport Peter’s purchases to an empty space outside the city, before leaving with a puzzled expression.

As soon as no one was around, Peter quickly stored all his purchased items in the Ring.

Now he had lots of things, and could live a comfortable life even in a desolated place!

Peter felt very content thinking about all the items he had collected in his Ring.

After finishing his task, Peter headed back towards County Town.

This time, Peter wanted to walk leisurely, enjoying a relaxed stroll on the streets.

While strolling, Peter arrived at the County Hospital and suddenly remembered the girl. He heard that she was admitted to this hospital and decided to check if she had been saved.

Although Peter didn’t want to get involved, he couldn’t shake the image of the girl’s desperate stare from his mind. He felt as if an emotional barrier was holding him back.

He thought to himself, "Fine, I’ll just have a look. If I can help, I might as well do it."

After asking a few doctors, Peter arrived at a room.

As soon as he got to the door, he could already hear a fierce argument going on inside.

"You ungrateful brat, will you listen to me or not? Your mother won’t let me discipline you!"

"Just kill me then!"

It was the girl’s voice, now sobbing out loud.

"What’s wrong with being with Young_Wei? Was it easy for me to raise you after I picked you up?"

"You only care about yourself! Jack Carter is scum, he’s a gangster!"

"Hmph, isn’t it just being his woman? What’s the big deal? Are you going to listen to me or not? I’ll beat you to death, you wretched girl."

"Just kill me then! I don’t want to be your daughter anymore. You picked me up and raised me, just so you could do this? You’re satisfied now, he slept with me, and you got your benefits. I don’t have a mother like you anymore!"

"Whether you acknowledge me as your mother or not isn’t up to you. I raised you so that you can follow Young_Wei and enjoy a better life. What else do you want?"

Hearing the quarrel between the mother and daughter, Peter understood that the girl had been raised by the middle-aged woman, who now wanted to send her off to be with Jack Carter.

While Peter was listening, he heard a loud thud followed by the middle-aged woman yelling, "You really want to die, huh? I raised you for so many years, and you can’t even give me anything in return?"

When Peter went to see what happened, he saw the girl holding a small knife, poised to stab herself in the heart.

Without thinking, Peter dashed forward and snatched the knife from the girl.

"You!"

"It’s you again!"

Both women were surprised to see Peter again.

"I came to check on your injuries," said Peter.

"Get lost! Who asked you to save me?" the girl shouted angrily.

Peter touched his nose and said, "Let’s talk about things calmly, okay? Why do you have to be so dramatic about dying? What’s the point?"

"It’s none of your business!"

This time, both women yelled at Peter.

Peter Brown wasn’t angry, and said, "I am really curious to know more about the situation. Why didn’t you marry Jack Carter? He seems to be quite a wealthy and influential person."

Now, Peter was in a good mood as he had benefited quite a lot from the sea this time. As he saw the situation with this family, he wanted to learn more about it.

"What the hell do you know? Jack Carter is a total scumbag, a complete underworld figure. None of his women end up well. You know, he has so many women, and they all suffer being with him!"

"Suffer hell! I’ve set you up to marry him. After you follow him, as long as you serve him well, there will be plenty of benefits. If I can clear your debt from raising you, forget your college friend. Can good looks put food on the table? He’s just a poor boy who knows nothing."

"I will repay your kindness for raising me once I start working and earning money."

"Repay, repay what? How many college graduates can find jobs now? If I wait for your repayment, I’ll starve to death."

The two began to argue.

At this time, Jack Carter also appeared.

Behind Carter, several young men with tattoos on their bodies looked fierce.

As soon as Carter saw Peter Brown standing inside, his eyes narrowed and said, "I thought it was someone else; how do I keep bumping into you everywhere?"

"Indeed, it seems we’re meant to meet."

Jack Carter laughed and said, "I heard you saved my woman. I should thank you for that. Good job catching her, it shows you’re quite skilled."

He then turned to the middle-aged woman and said, "Hurry up, my time is precious. It’s just a woman, almost cost her life."

He then looked at the girl and said, "What’s with you? Are you made of gold or silver? It’s your good luck that I have taken an interest in you, and you actually play games with me like jumping off a building. See if I don’t deal with you."

"Jack Carter, you scum, I would rather die than follow you."

He laughed and said, "No one in this county can defy my wishes. Even if you don’t follow me, I’ll destroy you first."

He then turned to the middle-aged woman and said, "I’ve given you the money. If you don’t handle the situation properly, I’ll deal with you, too."

"Young Wei, rest assured, the child is just not yet clear-headed. Following you is, of course, a good thing. I will make sure to do my job."

Peter Brown shook his head as he stared at Jack Carter’s behavior; the boy seemed unremarkable, but he was essentially blocking all the girl’s available paths.

Now, Peter was really holding back his anger. He didn’t want to get involved in this matter, knowing that it would cause a lot of trouble. But, no matter how he looked at Jack Carter, he couldn’t stand him.

At this time, Carter looked at Peter Brown and sneered, "My bro, I have something to do today, I won’t invite you to dinner. Anyway, you saved that woman, which saved me some trouble. This is my business card, call me if you need anything."

With that, he walked away with his men.

Looking at the business card that Jack Carter handed over, Peter saw that he was the chairman of the Linhai Catering Co., Ltd.

Looking at the business card and then at the two women, Peter was genuinely confused about their situation.

"What do you think of the situation? The guy looks like a chairman or something." Peter Brown looked at the girl.

"Haven’t you seen it? Jack Carter is the local tyrant in this county. You can’t even escape his grasp. Kid, what can you lose by sleeping with him? If it weren’t for his disdain, I would sleep with him myself. With just one night, you can get all kinds of benefits."

"I’ll never be with him, even if it kills me. Get that idea out of your head."

"You keep talking about Jack Carter; what’s his deal?" Peter Brown couldn’t help but wonder.

"What’s it to you? Can’t you just ask around? Jack Carter is a scumbag. You know that the Linhai Villa private community in the county is his private territory, right? His gang of underworld members in this county bully men and women. Whoever he takes a fancy to is brought there to live in the villas. He’s like an emperor in there, sleeping with whichever woman he pleases."

Peter Brown widened his eyes, somewhat shocked. He never thought that Carter played this hard.

"Really? Does this actually happen?" Peter Brown asked, feeling that even if it was the case, he couldn’t stay out of this issue any longer.

"You only have to ask around the County Town to find out who Jack Carter is. Many powerful figures protect him, and many people who tried to accuse him failed. Why is my life so bitter!" The girl started crying again.

"Is he really an underworld figure?" Peter Brown asked.

The middle-aged woman yelled at him, "What does our family’s business have to do with you? Mind your own business! Don’t meddle in our affairs or cause trouble for us!"

Then she turned to the girl and said, "Anyway, we’ve already accepted Mr. Carter’s money. You have to follow him, whether you like it or not. Do you want to destroy our whole family?"

"I will never be with him, even if it kills me! That scum!"

The girl was adamant in her refusal.

Upon seeing the girl’s firm attitude, Peter Brown silently praised her, thinking she was a good person.

"Has he really killed many people?" Peter Brown asked again.

"Go and see for yourself. Many people have died at his hands, and everyone dares not speak out in anger." The girl spoke loudly.

"Shut up! You ungrateful girl! Are you not satisfied until you bring our family to ruin?"

"Well, I think I need to really go take a look." Peter Brown decided to intervene in this matter.
