Chapter 217: Chapter 217: Wine Restaurant
Peter Brown hoped to lead a normal life. So, even though the school principal offered to arrange a separate dormitory for him, Peter declined. He felt there was nothing wrong in living with others.
After purchasing his bedding, Peter returned to his dorm.
Upon his arrival, he noticed several parents still hanging around, chatting with each other.
Peter quickly settled his bedding.
"Being from a rural area does have its advantages, just look at your classmates. Their parents can’t afford to see them off, but you’ve managed to get everything arranged so nicely by yourself," commented the mother of William Lee as she looked at her son.
Peter did not respond. He could hear an underlying tone of disdain for rural folk in her words. He had no words for such people with a sense of superiority.
"Enough. You should leave now. There’s nothing else for you to do here," John Anderson impatiently responded to his own mother.
"Here’s a suggestion, we’re all meeting for the first time today. My family would like to invite everyone out to dinner, so we can get to know each other. What do you think?" inquired the father of Neke Armstrong, who exuded an air of wealth, with a smile on his face.
"We appreciate the thought, but we rarely come here, and we plan on leaving tomorrow. We have plans to visit some friends with our kids tomorrow, so perhaps next time." responded the apologetic father of William Lee.
"No worries at all, that’s my oversight. Let’s plan for a meet-up some other time, as we’re all tied up with our individual commitments."
While the adults were engaged in their conversation, Peter received a call from Aunt Collins.
"Peter, what’s the matter with you? You’re here in the provincial city and you haven’t even come to see me!"
Seeing nothing going on in his dorm, Peter responded, "Alright, I’m on my way."
Ever since he’d helped Aunt Collins move to the provincial city, Peter had entrusted her care to Edward Martin. The Thompson Family had been taking good care of her, but going forward, there could be issues since Edward had died. It would be a bit of a struggle for Aunt Collins to keep her restaurant running, so Peter planned to help her fix her connections.
Seeing Peter pull out one of the most expensive cellphones on the market for his call, William Lee’s mother shook her head and said, "Young people these days, barely making ends meet yet flaunting such high-end phones. You youngsters."
Peter couldn’t bear to listen anymore. While on the phone, he made his exit from the room, not wanting to engage in further conversation with them.
Once outside, Peter hailed a taxi and headed to his stated destination.
In no time, Peter arrived at Aunt Collins’s restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by its size and impressive decor.
Looking at the expensive cars in the parking lot, Peter deduced that the restaurant was doing quite well.
"Aunt Collins must be doing a great job!" he mused.
As he entered, Aunt Collins, dressed in professional attire, greeted him with a warm smile.
"It’s impressive how you’ve managed all this," Peter commended.
"All thanks to Edward, he insisted on making this place the best it could be," Aunt Collins admitted.
Although Edward had helped out to win favor with Peter, Peter appreciated the gesture. He gave a sigh of regret upon remembering Edward, who had died because of him. He hadn’t anticipated things turning out this way.
The two of them then moved to a room upstairs.
"You must be hungry, I had some food sent up," offered Aunt Collins.
"Well, to be honest, I haven’t had my meal," Peter confessed politely.
"Even the boss keeps too busy to look after his own business and leaves me, a woman, to guard his interests!" Aunt Collins playfully rebuked Peter.
"What’s our current situation? With Edward gone, will we face any problems in the future?" Peter asked seriously.
"Edward’s dead? That’s why I haven’t seen him around the last few days," she muttered. Aunt Collins then looked at Peter and said, "Before you mentioned it, I had no idea why Edward was acting strangely. Now, it all makes sense."
"His behavior changed?"
"Yes, he used to have us in his best interests and would visit every day, but then suddenly, his attitude towards me changed. He said there should be changes to our shareholdings because he was the one who started this. I thought of discussing it with you, but then you moved to the provincial city. I decided to wait until you arrived to talk about it, but now he’s already gone," remarked Aunt Collins.
He changed his tune?
Upon hearing this, Peter felt some relief from his guilt. It now seemed clear to him that Edward had been disingenuous to him all along.
Aunt Collins brought a stack of account books, "You should look at these as the Chairman of the Board, I am just retaining these assets for you."
Peter shrugged, "As long as you’re looking after things, I don’t think we need to be so formal."
Aunt Collins rolled her eyes coyly, her lips curled into a smile, "I see you as my man anyway, so your word is my command." She then poured a glass of wine for Peter and sat next to him, "From now on, you’d better accompany me more often since you’re in the city."
Peter changed the subject, "So how were the shares of the restaurant set up? What was the arrangement when Edward took you for registration?"
"He said that you were the person behind this restaurant project. The registered funds were provided by him, claiming they were proceeds from the sale of some kind of medicine you supplied, totalling 30 million."
Peter nodded slightly, recalling that he had once given Edward some Elixirs, which Edward must have sold for cash.
"Edward insisted on doing everything officially. So, although I’m the General Manager, the management of this place is in the hands of professionals we recruited from the market. They’re all very capable, and the restaurant is running smoothly. Of course, Edward deserves credit for this as well, he did a lot for us."
"Yes, but now that Edward is gone, the Thompson Family won’t be looking after us anymore, which will make things more difficult. You should let me handle any issues. Your job is to keep an eye on the restaurant."
"Peter, our chefs are pretty good, but our special dishes are still lacking. The competition in the food industry is extremely fierce. Do you have any good ideas about that?" Aunt Collins inquired.
"Do you trust anyone you can rely on? I plan to lease some land near the provincial city to set up a farming base to specially supply the restaurant," Peter proposed.
Aunt Collins was familiar with Peter’s work in the medicinal plant industry and brightened up at the suggestion, "You mean, apply your unique cultivation technique?"
With a nod, Peter confirmed, "Yes, whatever we grow or rear will definitely have top quality taste and flavor."
"That sounds wonderful, my younger brother just finished high school, but he’s a smart and capable lad, can he be entrusted with this job?"
"Sure!" Peter didn’t have a problem with it, as long as the person could handle things properly.
